Burnt hard boiled eggs?

Burnt hard boiled eggs? - 09/09/06 02:59 PM

Last night I was making a batch of PML and when I was boiling my eggs I may have boiled them too long or something. They weren't any different in color but when I was blending everything together there was a burnt smell to it. When I poured it in the container to freeze I smelled it one more time to see if it still smelt the same and it did. I even made my boyfriend smell it so I would know that it wasn't just me and he said "yes, smells burnt." I went ahead and froze it till I could find out today on here if it's okay to still use. Do you think it would be safe or do I need to make some more?

I never knew that you can burn eggs by boiling them, but if you smell 'burned', then that means that certain chemicals have formed due to the heat that are cancerogenos... even as a person you shouldn't really eat it.

I also just found out that if you put a raw egg in the water (just covering it) and then turn the heat on, that if you turn the heat off once the water boils, you can turn the heat off and leave it in the water for at least 10min. That way, you are saving electricity, you can't overcook it and you don't have to watch the stove for as long...

I would probably make the batch over again just to be sure. You wouldn't want to risk your babies getting sick. Though, I don't really think you can burn a hard boiled egg. Maybe it was something in the oven burner spilled from an earlier dinner.

The *carcinogen statement is partially correct. If something is burnt it will not change into a cancer causing agent i.e. carcinogen but some studies have shown foods that are smoked such as salmon can be carcinogens because the flavor is sometimes coming from the burning of petroleum based substances, which have been shown to cause cancer in lab tests.

Could it of possibly been your blenders motor? I am baffled that you can burn hard boiled eggs and I haven't found that out for my self yet.

But yes if it was the egg then I would re make a batch because you don't want anything to happen to your babies.

Usually if you boil an egg too long it looks a little different, especially the yolk will look different.

A good saying to live by. 'When In Doubt, Throw it OUT!'

You know, I was thinking the same thing about it possibly being the blenders motor!! It's a brand new blender, so I hope not!! I've only used it 6 or 7 times!! Anyway, I'm throwing the batch out and I already went to the store and got fresh eggs for a new batch!! I'll be so mad if it happens again and it is the motor because that will be a second ounce of WHPS down the drain and also 450 more ml's of honey that would also be wasted. I'll keep my fingers crossed and update you guys when I make the new batch tonight!!

Did the water boil off of the eggs? I burned boiled eggs once by letting all the water boil off. It is definite that you can burn boiled eggs (never have been much of a cook) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/roflmao.gif" alt="" /> I threw them out and started over.

Karen14 is right..the only way as far as I know to burn an egg is if the water boils dry and then you can tell as the shell and egg white are brown in colour. My old blender always used to give off a burnt smell whenever I used it so I reckon it was that or maybe something you used the blender for last time.
