Introducing gliders - 06/02/11 02:39 AM

As you can see in my signature, I currently have two female sugar gliders (which are 2 or more years old) and they will be joined by a new female (who will be 8 weeks old on pick up). I have a spare cage that I had upgraded my two from and am planning on keeping the joey in there until Im sure they get along. I also plan to have supervised time with the baby and each female (not both at once till later) and exchanging pouches so they can get use too each others scents. I was wondering if anyone had any tips to help this process and if anyone did this/if so how did it go?

(note: the larger cage will have more then 1 dish/water bottle once they get do along)

Keep in mind that your new baby will be a good bit smaller than the others so you'll want to wait a bit before doing introductions. Do the 30 day quarantine, then begin with your pouch swapping...she'll continue to grow and then you can introduce them one by one. This will typically work out best. Decide which of your current two is the most passive...it helps to intro this one first and once your new baby is accepted by this one, try bringing the other into the mix. It can be easy, and it can be difficult...it will just depend on your gliders and their personalities. smile

thankyou everyone. I looked at the sites in the links, good tactics (though rediculusly small cages) my two glider just got all checked healthy by their vet, and now i just got to wait to get everything done for the baby.. If i get everyone checked and deemed healthy by vet is the 30 day quarentine still necessary? or is a an observation period of two weeks adequate?

Yes, the 30 day quarantine is still necessary.
After the initial vet checks, you wait the 30 days (quarantine) and then have the vet checks done again. This is because the shedding cycle of parasites are every 2-4 weeks and can be missed in the first check. thumb
