The penis... - 09/28/08 05:37 AM

My baby Milton for the past week every time I go to play with him, his penis is out... I've only noticed this once on my oldest Edgur. Is it normal that it's always out??

I'm guessing he's not neutered? He is probably "flossing" with it, which is normal. But if it doesn't retract, that's bad. It could dry out and become necrotic. worried As long as it's going back in, he's fine.

Yeah, my calendar deleted his oop date but he's about 12 weeks old, and I'm sure it does go back in but I just keep catching him with it out. I'll keep an eye on him. If I don't see it go back in, I'll be sure to get him checked out..

No, they will reach sexual maturity and allow the penis to be out for periods of time but should retract.
Keep a VERY close eye on him if he is not retracting his penis it could be a sign of a UTI(one of my boys had that happen) or prolapsed penis.
If he does not retract his penis you will need to make sure it stays moist with PLAIN ky jelly, no warming or tingling junk in it. Then he will need a vet asap the vet can try to get him to retract and if he has a UTI he will need antibiotics.

DO NOT let the penis become dry if necrosis starts then it may need amputation and that will be much harder on your glider and more expensive.

Some go through a phase..............if it starts to dry out in the slightest you can use some plain KY jelly......................may want to have some on hand if you dont already. As long as its moist and pink he should be OK. smile

Yes moist and pink, watch to see if it starts to turn red and dry looking.(dark not healthy looking, you'll notice)

How often is it supposed to retract? I mean, how long can it be out before it needs to go back in?

Looking thru old posts on prolapsed penis( penis hanging out)
Minkasmom said that it is a concern if MORE THAN AN HOUR.
Then put the KY on it(use a q tip) If he still doesn't retract get him in to see a vet. Keep the penis moist with KY every hour till he sees a vet.

My son likes to visit the babies during the morning since that has become thier favorite play time. Yesterday I brought him to the cage and picked up a tube of KY jelly off of the top and explained to him what the penis looks like and the whole story of it hanging out too long (him rolling his eyes the whole time) So hopefull if he ever notices it he will keep an eye on it, call me and be a good big brother....................and put Ky on it.

I'll have to keep an eye out for this with my kid too, since he's a boy.

Is there a specific reason for using KY, or will any type of lubrication work?

I have had two males do this. One had "irratation" due to the cage bars not being clean enough.(He was my first one - I didn't know they peed on the bars.) The other one stopped when he got neutered.

You already have some good advice! Keep up the good work!

My male started doing this right before his neuter appointment. He was about 12 weeks old. His stayed out for hours at a time. Lubricating it with KY worked wonders and I watched him very closely. Needless to say...I had to take him to the vet the next morning who decided to neuter him right away. I didn't want to take any chances because once it becomes swollen and can't retract...it doesn't take long for things to go terribly wrong. I haven't seen this problem since his neuter.

K-Y Jelly is water-based, and since you are putting it in an area that your gliders can lick you want a water based lubricant. There are other store brands that are the same as KY but don't get petrolium based and don't get one with warming or numbing, tingling stuff in it.
