The First Gliders in the US - 05/23/08 10:54 PM

Does anyone know the history of how sugar gliders came to the US? I was wondering about this, along with questions like who owned the first glider in the US? How did they get them?

I always watch peoples dates of joining this forum (does that make me crazy?)and the earliest I've seen is '99. But I still wonder how gliders came here, when did they come here, who had the first ones, and how did they get them?

autralia has a strict no exportation policy on its wildlife.

i dont know if a small number of them were cleared to be sent to the U.S but many have also been smuggeled out of the country

You may check with Judie here on GC her site is www.MyLittleGremlin.com. I think she has been in gliders from almost the US beginning she also has/had some of the original Leus. She would probably know alot about their origins here.

Here is a thread that has some interestin info on the origins of color breeding.
Breeding genetics

There are members here that were involved with the beginning of breeding and the info is here with those members, you just have to know where to look.
I have never looked into it but have heard of the 3 leu lines and the fact that someone still had some of the original leus just blew me away.

The origins of gliders is very interesting and just the fact that some originals are still around and the owners accessible is amazing.

Thank goodness for the glider pioneers without them who knows if we'd have our precious babies right now or not.

There were still a lot of gliders being imported from Indonesia. While there are certainly some Australian lines here (people can get around anything at some point or other). Most of the lines are probably from Indonesia originally. There has been a lot of discussion about when gliders as pets in the US actually started and I don't think anyone really knows the answer to that, just a lot of speculation. dunno

Where is lindayaks when we need her? I know for a fact Linda brought at least a couple (maybe 3, not positive) of wild-caught gliders from Indonesia and she had to go through a lot of red tape in order to get them home in USA. I don't remember the whole story as I heard about it several years ago.

I just asked my husband, Oldcolt58, if he knew the full story of how Linda came to acquire the wild caught gliders and brought them here. He said he did. Right now he is at work and he will be home later tonight and I will share what he tells me with you here, or I could have him reply to this thread. My husband has known Linda very well for years.

Re: The First Gliders in the US - 05/24/08 10:03 PM

when i was doing a paper on gliders for my southeast asia class i came across that glider's aren't protected by law in indonesia and new guinea, so they can be captured and obtained without a license there and are occasionally sold illigally by vendors in street markets without license and their sales are generated mainly towards tourists then southeast asians, so perhaps that has something to do with it?

I know Geoff HPW distrubutor had gliers over 25 yrs ago. He said the ones he had were real mean. He can't understand us ahving them as pets now.
