Taking Gliders to work -- in food establishment? - 05/30/08 06:42 PM

Hey all,

I hear of a lot of people taking their gliders with them to work. I can see this in an office, school, or other such setting. But do any of you work in a food establishment and still take your gliders to work? What have been your experiences?

According to the FDA, they will NOT allow animals other than assistant dogs in Restraunts.

my parents own a pizza place and i had gone there with my gliders, but i didnt handle any food... i think as long as you MAKE SURE you wash your hands, and its only for a lil bit and all the noise bother them then i think its ok...

i feel the same way, i want to take my gliders to work, but i work for clinique in macys... i can picture it, sitting someone in the chair to do their makeup and skin type them and then they start crabbing.... lol

Like Linda said animals are not allowed were food is served that would also go for you taking them with you when you go out to eat. I am sure most of us have done that though, I myself have.
The strangest animal I have taken to a restaurant was an 8 foot boa in my diaper bag.lol ( to long of a story)
If you were to get caught it would depend on who since you can be fined.

I have lots of time to listen to this one!

I've never taken mine to eat with me, I just feel more sanitary that way and to respect others eating around me in case they discovered I had an animal.

I have no problem sneaking them in to an eating place with me...But I think it would be different if I worked there.

handling other peoples food and your animal....people wouldn't be as forgiving .

but to each their own...

My husband worked in various food establishments for years and the health department would impose hefty fines if they found out there was an animal on premises, and you might lose your job as a result.

The biggest concern I would have would be smells/smoke/etc. that sort of thing.

I have snuck mine in to work with me twice. I'm a manager in a food establishment, before we even opened they started crabbing their heads off and spent the rest of the day in the office in a dark corner asleep in their bonding pouch. I have never been so scared both times that the health dept. would walk in at any moment. The food establishment COULD get shut down if found out, hefty fines implimented AND loss of job. The risks are just to high for my own selfishness to want to be able to have my babies with me at work. I wont do it again. And if any state health dept. officer wanted to really get nasty? I wouldnt doubt if they had the power to confiscate the animal. Or at least have the authority to have animal control step in and take our precious babies from us. I wouldnt risk it. I'm telling you, those 2 times were the most stressful days of my life.

VERY good points made by all! Thank you! And Sherri, I would have been just as stressed. Not to mention the dangers of a food establishment -- ovens, stovetops, fryers, etc!

I love my gliders, all 14 of them. I think they are wonderful, and I love everyone elses gliders. But, if I found out someone was preparing food with them and their potty habits anywhere near....I think it's a bad idea, period. I can't tell you how many times mine have pooped in my hair and I didn't know.

I wasnt wanting to handle them at work really, just wanted them to sleep in their pouch under my shirt while I worked. Didnt happen that way. They had other plans. LOL. Nobody had to make any noise and they crabbed. I just walk past someone and they crabbed. So I figured if thats how they were going to behave while we were still closed? What were they going to be like when we opened and I had to deal with customers? Only a select few knew I had them on those 2 days and NO ONE was allowed to touch them. I thought since 1 set of gliders didnt do so well the first time I would try a more bonded pair the 2nd time. With no such luck and the amount of stress I went through having them there? No more trying. None of my gliders were sressed either time. They got to sleep in a nice dark, cool, quiet corner all day. And I felt horrible for beeing so greedy and selfish to want to take them and put them in that situation, or put my establishment in that situation either. I mean come on what was I thinking? That place pays my bills, puts a roof over our head and helps to put food on the table. Not to mention it helps to take care of ALL my babies! And I was so eagerly ready to jeapordize that. Nope not gonna happen. And to all of you that work in the food industry? All the dangers of what COULD happen are not worth it.

The food smell may pose a problem.
One time I had one of my boys with me in my bra. I had gone out shopping about a half hour from home. I was gone maybe an hour and a half. ( I had given him water and a treat)
I stopped at the Pharmacy on my way home. As I walked across the parking lot the came the strong odor of the Chinese place next door.
Before I could even think about it being an issue he was up out of my shirt and on my head sniffing way.lol
Thankfully the pet store was also right there also so I was able to dart in there.
They of coarse knew I had gliders with me and thought the whole thing was very entertaining.
