Canola Oil help?

Canola Oil help? - 07/09/10 06:37 PM

i am not sure what canola oil tastes like but it apparently is the good stuff. i added a few drops to their puppy mix and now can use the 1:2 ratio with no problem. they drink it down fast and then lick all over my fingers to get every last little drop. even dad and big brother are excited to lick them when i put them back in the nest

i have heard conflicting info on how much to feed. one says to let them eat as much as they want, they know when to stop. another said only to feed certain amounts or their bellies might rupture. i will gladly let them eat as much as they want but i don't want to kill them.

i stopped them at a 1cc syringe full. some of it does drip so i know they didn't eat that much.

thanks in advance

I'm sorry, but I'm a little bit confused by your post. dunno
Are we talking about baby sugar gliders?? Are you feeding them puppy food mixed with Canola oil?

Please clarify, so we can help answer your questions properly. thanks

it is the puppy milk replacer....esbilac. i am not feeding them dog food, lol. i meant to write puppy milk mix--a few drops of canola oil in that stuff. it is powder so i have to mix it up 1 part powder:2 parts water

but yes baby sugar gliders, came out on the 29th and their mama died on wednesday.

I'm glad the canola oil helped! As they get a little bigger add more to it. Like next week instead of 10-15 drops add in about 20-25 drops when you make a batch of formula. Since by then they will be eating even more the 10-15 drops will be diluted a little by you having to mix up more formula. They also require more as they get bigger and their bodies start needing more energy and they become more active etc.
With mine I ended (at weaning time) with mixing 30 drops per batch. It was a larger batch I was making by that time.

Have you been weighing them every day at the same time? You should start to see them gaining now that they are eating well and have the canola oil in their esbilac. They should gain between 1/2-1 gram a day.

Like I said in my pm, if you have any questions or just need to talk you can call me! smile

Also, when feeding the joeys, at their age they are usually eating around .3-.5cc's every 30-60minutes. This is just an average. Some will eat more. If they are eating 1+cc then they should be eating about every 1-1 1/2 hours. Do not go any longer than that just yet. Around 3-4 weeks oop then they can eat every 2-3 hours.

Normally when a Joey is full it will turn it's head away from the syringe. But with very young joeys (1-2 weeks oop) they may fall asleep every fee minutes during a feeding. So you will need to stimulate them a little so they will wake up to eat more. I gently rub the tip of the syringe on their nose, lips, or chin. If that doesn't work I will gently massage their head and body and that usually wakes them up.
Remember to check their tummy before and after feedings. Sometimes it can be dificult to do that. Hold them up to a bright light and look for a white area about the size of a pea or dime on their right side between thier ribs and clocea. If there isn't any white there then they have no milk in their tummy. If there is then they haven't digested all of the formula from the last feeding (if it's like this before you feed it). If it looks like a bubble then I would skip a feeding as this can be bloat and that can be deadly.

I hope you will post some pictures soon! We love looking at little joeys! smile
