Histopathologic evaluation for: cecum, jejunum, liver, spleen, stomach/duodenum

GENERAL COMMENTS: Cosmetic Necropsy
Died 3/7/10. Has other gliders concerned about contagious issues.

SUMMARY: A male sugar glider was submitted for cosmetic necropsy. The animal died at home
without any clinical signs. Grossly the animal is well-fleshed. There is a small amount of blood
staining around the anus. The liver is mottled and the stomach contains yellow flocculent fluid.
The duodenum is gas filled. The jejunum is fluid filled with yellow fluid. The cecal contents are
dry and the serosa has small hemorrhages. Portions of the intestines, liver, and spleen were
collected for histopathology.

No significant lesions were found in any of the tissues examined. Small pyriform protozoa were
present in the crypts of the jejunum. The protozoa are consistent with Spironucleus sp. It is
unknown if this parasite is pathogenic in sugar gliders but is routinely found in pet rodents
without causing disease.

jejunum Small pyriform protozoa are present in the crypts of the jejunum. The
protozoa are consistent with Spironucleus sp. There is a mild diffuse
increase in the number of lymphocytes in the lamina propria of the jejunum.
liver hepatocyte anisocytosis and anisokaryosis, polyploidy, and multiple
intranuclear eosinophilic pseudoinclusions
spleen moderate diffuse distribution of hemosiderin in macrophages of the red pulp
stomach/duodenum no significant lesions
