Legalization of Glider Ownership in CA

Legalization of Glider Ownership in CA - 09/15/07 09:58 PM
Hey all,
I have recently moved to California and had to rehome 4 gliders as a result. Two of the gliders were hand raised by myself and were very bonded with me. I really miss my babies and wish I could have brought them with me. I just couldn't endanger their lives by sneaking them into the state.
I just finished creating a petition to ask the lawmakers for the state of California to consider legalizing them. You can find it at:
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/2/legalize-sugar-gliders-as-pets-in-californiaPlease join me in getting these little ones legalized in CA
The more signatures I can get from CA residents the better. So, if you know anyone in CA who would like to have gliders tell them about my petition. And sign it yourself as well.
Also if you read it and have any suggestions for changes, additions, or subractions... let me know and I will consider your suggestion.
Thank you for your help and participation

Signed, definetly. It must be horrible to not be able to bring your babies into the state. I had a friend who couldn't and she went through such a rough patch.

I don't see why they would illegalize them in any state, anyway.
I read your reasoning and that REALLY made it seem rediculous that they were illegalized at all there.

I worry about this a lot as my boyfriend wants to further his career in architecture in California. His plan was always for us to move there in a year or less. However, we have 2 gliders that are part of our family now, and I don't think I could just give them up.
I signed the petition, and I hope everyone on here will do the same!

Something very important to point out...
California is bordered by states where gliders are legal... If gliders were able to thrive and reproduce in the wild they would be encroaching and crossing over our boarders from the legal states. Eventually populating out state anyway. But the fact is, they cannot thrive in the wild here and they will not reproduce in the wild here. They are not a threat to out ecosystem. I personally would like to see the studies that California has done to support this claim... Oh wait... They haven't done any, its a blanket statement that keeps a vast number of animals out of our great state.
sad but true, if a petition were enough they would be legal by now. Its going to take alot more than that. Not that I don't thing this is a great post, but a lawyer and serious facts and a bill created, proposed and passed is what is going to be needed before they will ever be legal.

Re: Legalization of Glider Ownership in CA - 09/16/07 04:56 PM
My sister lives in CA and has been encouraging me to move there.
She has owned a hedgehog, and has friends that have ferrits, both are illegal there. So, she tells me I can just "sneak" them in. I tried to explain that I feel very strongly about it, and that, in fact, 5 of my gliders were rescued from CA. She doesn't get it.
She doesn't get it to the point where when I said "And I have 12 gliders!" She said, "But you don't need to have them all. Just bring your favorites." ARGH! Like they are disposable!?

trying to sneak them in can get you in trouble too...
California has check points, can and will check your car. They'll fine you and what will happen to the suggies?

Re: Legalization of Glider Ownership in CA - 09/16/07 05:35 PM
I was stopped at a check point and I openly declared my gliders... I said that I was transporting them through CA. It was fine... All of the pet stores are starting to sell supplies for sugar gliders, which I find funny. Unfortunatly its [censored] peleted diets and people will probable be feeding their gliders this because they do not have access to the correct information. But this just goes to show that people, large companies, are obviously catching on to the fact that they are here. Same with Ferrets, which have had products in stores for YEARS! But I have to ask all of the CA residents... When was the last time you got up to read the morning paper and saw a ferret on your front lawn?? Hmmmm Just something to think about.
As far as these fines and Gliders being taken away. I know animal control people and I know a Fish and Game officer... And I have yet to hear a story involving sugar gliders. So I would be curious to know how many of the Californians have had personal experiance with or personally know someone who has had a fine or had a glider removed from their custody, or worse, destroyed. And no I heard about a guy stories.

Re: Legalization of Glider Ownership in CA - 09/16/07 06:04 PM
Actually at the check points they are checking for fruit and vegetables. They don't even need to be told that you are bringing gliders in... However, the threat that they would be put down and the fines/jail time plus the record that this would cause against me were all enough combined to keep me from bringing my babies. I just couldn't bear having them put down because I insisted on bringing them into the state with me.
I know that a petition isn't enough to get the law passed. Everything required to get the attention of the law makers of the state could take years to work through, but I figured doing something to get the ball rolling was better than just sitting around complaining about it.
I really appreciate everyone who has taken the time to sign the petition.
I would also like to request that this thread be kept positive. I know that it is not an easy task upon which I have embarked. I know a petition will not be enough on its own. But I also know that this is a step in the right direction and will do what I can to get this law changed. In the mean time I will gladly accept any help that I can get to accomplish this as I doubt that I can do it on my own.
So please if you can - Help - but don't put my efforts down.
Thanks
