GEORGIA RESIDENTS - Please read - 08/24/09 11:44 AM

Just wanted to give all Georgia Residents a reminder that although sugar gliders are now legal in Georgia, one of the requirements is that they MUST be purchased/acquired from a USDA LICENSED BREEDER.

Some vets will ask for proof that the suggie was received from a USDA breeder before they will treat the baby.

So, if you are in Georgia, please be a responsible owner and only acquire your sugar glider from a USDA Licensed Facility.

It does not matter if it is a rescue, given to you or purchased!!! It MUST come from a USDA Licensed Breeder/Facility!!!

Yeah the bad part is a lot of Georgia residents did not know EXACTLY how the law was worded or EXACTLY what it meant...

I see a few people from Georgia from time to time who respond to ads to take in rescues...

the problem is, IT IS ILLEGAL for them to do so!

All Georgia residents HAVE to purchase/obtain their gliders from USDA licensed breeders ONLY... they can't legally take in a rescue case or buy a glider EVER from ANYONE else.

Thanks for posting this Paula- I hope it helps to clear up some things for Georgia residents!

You know, I don't want to get into a phylosophical battle here. Freedom or not we have LAWS and laws are to be followed or you risk getting caught.

With any other law that you chose to break, if you get caught, you will have to face the consequences. Unfortunaly, where the law relates to gliders, the ones to suffer the consequences of such imature act will be the inocent animals that you knowingly took in despite being advised of the laws and possible consequences.

These innocent gliders can be confiscated and euthanized.

I believe Shyshy would fall under a "rescue" case scenario, as she came out of a filthy trailer with 100 other dead animals in various states of decomp. in with her. Rather than argue the legality, what can a GA resident do that finds glider(s) in such conditions, other than taking them in illegally?

Donate that rescue to a usda licensed breeder. That will start the paper work for the little one as there will be paper work saying where it came from (you). Then the breeder can adopt out that glider with paper work to a new home.

I think that should work.

What they can do LEGALLY is to work with the network of rescuers and rescue homes throughout the US to get these rescued gliders to locations where they ARE legal and to those that are equipped both in knowledge/experience and financial resources to provide what the glider needs. Then find them proper homes where the glider's needs (legal and otherwise) are met first. Keeping them in an illegal location is a selfish act and not in the best interest of the gliders.
