this isnt a birth defect... somehow the girl i got my glider from didnt put her cage on something high but left it on the floor for her jack russel terrier to open the cage and eat the male and tried to eat my female but my female got away but not before he could eat her tail... she now doesnt glide to much and just sits around on the posts and only moves around to eat or go back to the pouch... i gave her a wheel but she have never ran in one before me.. if you want pics il post upon request

Re: my glider has no tail - 12/02/06 06:49 PM

on my male its the first thing he goes for is that wheel and he will run and run and run and then stop and then hold onto the wheel and spin with it upside down and around and around...

my female will just go straight down the cage towards where the food dishes are and she will check to see if any food is out... she is such a pig

Re: my glider has no tail - 12/02/06 06:54 PM

My female has never used the wheel but my male loves it. Have you thought about getting her a mate?

Re: my glider has no tail - 12/02/06 07:44 PM

the wheel is worth it ... my girls like it sometimes they just hang out in there and relax and other times they run like crazy... my one girl is also without part of her tail and she does fine ..... like you said without or with tail my girl is definatly worth it...

Re: my glider has no tail - 12/02/06 08:24 PM

I'm so sorry to hear about what happened to your little girl! How traumatizing for her to have seen that happen to her mate and then to be attacked herself! cry
I myself have three gliders, two of which have about half a tail as is normal. I don't consider them special needs though because they get long just fine and my little Gidget and Gus are happy and healthy and actually don't know any different because it probably was caused by one of their parents when they were joeys. I actually adopted Gus from T here on GC and he is a little doll. He also has ears that were chewed on too by his parents too but he's still a cutie! And my little Gidget is the most energenic of the three. They both jump and glide but Gus doesn't glide as much as the other two though he is getting braver because he likes to follow the girls around who tend to jump and glide farther than him. Your little girl will be just fine with the shorter tail or without a tail but since she was not born that way she may not want to glide or jump as much if at all because she doesn't know how to without it or is too scared. You may want to think about getting a friend for her since she is use to having a mate though it's not always a guarantee that they will get along. Just something to think about. Congrats on your new little girl and I'd love it if you'd share pics of your cutie! Here's pics of my Gus and Gidget.

Re: my glider has no tail - 12/02/06 09:43 PM

LOL i guess i didnt clarify... the female i have now i adopted after it all happened to her tail.. she had her own mate but he got eaten... i first got a male and then instantly got a mate cause i wouldnt want to be alone... so i DO have TWO gliders at the moment a male and a female.. i hope to have joeys...

my gliders are not photogentic at all so i have limited pics...

Re: my glider has no tail - 12/02/06 11:43 PM

I just got a girl who also has no tail.. i was told she bit it and had to have the rest amputated to eliminate the risk of infection. so she now has a little stump.. and when she dives head first into her pouch her stump wiggles and its soooo cute. she doesn't glide either . or jump like my little boy does. i assume she cant keep balance w/o her tail.. it almost seems like shes afraid of heights.. she will climb to the top of the cage (5 ft) but wont go on any branches or perches and if she does she freezes and makes a U-turn back to the cage walls..

I just adopted a little guy that has very little tail also. He does really good...just a tad clumsy making his *mark*....he choses not to glider very often, but tends to jump to where he needs to go smile. I tell you what though, he is FAST. Tailless gliders really aren't special needs, but sure are special heart.

One of my rescues came with only a stub...his tail had been pulled off by a former owner. He didn't fly well, but did everything else, and had a precious personality. Here's a pic of Gim for you:

Re: my glider has no tail - 12/06/06 07:06 AM

One of my girls thinks the wheel is her bedroom. She runs in the wheel for a while, then she takes a nap in it. Then she runs more when she wakes up and naps in it again. It's cute but it makes for some rude awakenings when one of the others decides they're tired of waiting on her to move before they go for a run. roflmao

Ive never seen a glider without a tail. They look totally different but still just as good looking.

I have heard that tails can be pulled off, but I never really took it to heart. Poor suggie, well at least she is still alive.

Re: my glider has no tail - 01/12/07 12:57 PM

I have quite a few gliders that are missing parts or all of their tails, all were rescues. Most all of them love to run in their wheel. Hope was recently given a new steelth wheel as a gift, thanks WSGN and Anita. Her old wheel wore out and it seems that she didn't run in the other wheels I put into the cage. Now I find her running all the time, no one else dares go to HER wheel when she is up.
I think all gliders are special, to me they all have some scars, I only want to remove the inner scars (mistrust and bad pasts) the outer scars just add to their personality.

Re: my glider has no tail - 01/14/07 05:21 AM

I have a pair (male & female) who look just like Gimli.

Tiger Lilly lost her tail to a bad choice of exercise wheels on my part, and I have NO clue what happened to Willy Wonka's tail...I went into their room one morning, and he had this bloody stump. I never found the missing part, and have never figured out this mystery.

I've taught both of them that they can run, jump, and even glide if they just believe in themselves and try...I believe in both of them & love them dearly.

They'll be coming to the SGGA with me this year! I can't wait to show them off!

Re: my glider has no tail - 01/14/07 06:24 AM

I really wouldn't worry too much about the tail being missing, one way or the other; a lot of us have gliders missing some, if not all of their tails, and they generally seem to get along just fine. For me, Snug's the one who's missing the last few inches of his tail, but he jumps and runs around all over the place; it's Flip that's the ground glider and has been scared of jumping, and she's got her tail completely intact. Since we got Snug, he's even been teaching Flip how to jump around, so she's more active now than she was before; she's still a ground glider when it comes to the tent, though! Flip runs the wheel, and Snug won't, but he gets his excersize in other ways, so it's no big deal; and honestly, even if neither of them seemed into it, it would still be okay.

I don't know how long you've had your girl, but loosing a tail like that can be rather emotionally traumatic for a glider; I'd give her at least a few months to adjust to the new digs, and maybe she'll start being interested in moving about more once she gets more comfortable with things. I know that it took Snug some time to be anything but totally skittish, and in some ways he's still kinda scared of everything, but he's made a lot of progress - it's just taken time and patience.

Re: my glider has no tail - 07/04/07 05:18 PM

Ok I can explain why she doesn't glide much. Their tail is used for balance when gliding. Ive never seen a glider with an amputation of the tail glide much. Mine don't even glide much and they have tails. Was the girl nice to them, did she treat them right? Some gliders don't really like wheels.
Anyway she will be fine.

Re: my glider has no tail - 07/04/07 05:24 PM

Poor baby! - it would be best if she would use her wheel if she doesn't glide much...she needs to get some exersize... I wouldn't worry about the gliding too much...they use their tails to help "steer" them as they glide, so it isn't a suprise that she doesn't feel comfortable gliding. Best of wishes smile

Re: my glider has no tail - 11/10/07 02:08 PM

My favorite glider just died last night :[. She had a 1 inch stumpy tail. I got home at 10pm and found her limp at the bottom of my cage. I'm guessing she must have fallen from one of my hanging chains. My cage was new and I should have anticipated her needs more. Gliders without their long tails can't leap, glide, or even run as well. Stumpy would always make short hops when inside her Wodent wheel. I just want to remind people who have gliders with tail defects to keep in mind that height in cages might be a danger to them. In hindsight, I should have put a little safety net underneath all my hanging toys. :/

I am so sorry for your loss and thank you for sharing your story with us about special needs gliders. I hope this will others with gliders in the same situation.

Re: my glider has no tail - 11/10/07 02:51 PM

hug2 I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your baby. It sounds like you were a wonderful mommy, so please don't blame yourself. It's hard to determine somtimes what needs or measures need to be taken to protect our babies. There have been several gliders who have had tail injuries, amputations, and have done well with their limitations. Your little one was exhibiting great mobility, so from your perpective on her activity you were taking measures to provide a safe enviorment for her. Sometimes things like this happen, at not fault on the owners behalf. Bless her heart, she did have a wonderful loving home with you and will be forever eternally grateful. God Speed Little one, and many prayers heading your way for comfort and strength. hug2

I'm so sorry for your loss. How high was your cage? That must have been a far fall to sustain such a fatal injury.

Re: my glider has no tail - 11/11/07 07:32 PM

I'm so glad that you were able to take in this special girl. Years ago I took in a rescue glider who I named Hope. She had been attacked my her previous owner's pet jennet. When he brought her to me she had not been to the vet and her tail was hanging on by a thread. She had to have her tail amputated but she did get around quite well afterwards. She could not glider but did "hop". Hope held a very special place in my heart.

Kieko has about 1/2 a tail, too, and she doesn't seem to notice, though she's never had a full one. She still runs and jumps all over the place

Re: my glider has no tail - 11/12/07 04:49 PM

I've got some tail-free gliders (the shortest is only a stub to the longest w/just the tip missing) and they all get around fine. Shandy (only has a stump) runs and climbs all over the glider room at playtime and hasn't seemed to notice the fact that she no longer has a tail (it was amputated due to sm)
