Rescue Glider with only one eye

Rescue Glider with only one eye - 07/19/07 04:06 PM

Just got a new male pair, and one of them (Bandit) only has one eye. I don't know exactly when it happened, but it was long enough ago for it to heal and for the eyelid to fuse. So far he hasn't shown any need for special attention, except for the fact that he will nip if you approach him from his blind side (I can't say I blame him). They have completely cleaned their plate every night.

Any suggestions on what I should do or may need to do in the future for the little guy? He still plays just as hard as his brother (Toby) who is normal in every way.

Thanks,
Emily in NC

Poor little guy hug2 It sounds to me like he's one of those gliders who isn't going to let his disability hinder his "fun"! As long as you feel that he is playing and acting like any other normal glider I don't see where you have any worries.
Was this caused by an injury, or birth defect?
Have you had him examined by a vet?

If you do notice any neurological problems developing (ie movement, lack of interest, falling, running into things etc.) I would have him looked at. In that case, you would then need to set up his living quarters to accomodate is visual disability.

Your a special glider mommy to take him in, these little ones are so fortunate to have you! Thank You! hug2

I am currently fostering a glider that is blind in one eye. The only thing the vet suggested was that since this will mess up their depth perception and their ability to glide/jump that once the cage is set up I try to keep everything in the same place when I clean. This way once he learns how far apart things are, he will feel more comfortable with jumping & won't fall

my sweet maisy is missing an eye. it was lost long before I got her, and does not cause her any trouble! I think so long as you keep a check on him and follow the advice of others, he will do great with you! I am so thankful that there are people willing to take in the special needs babies!

Finally got pictures of the two. The one who is missing an eye is a picture hog! lol. I had to coax the other one out of hiding for a picture of him!

Click here to see the pictures. Just click on the Glider Subalbum. Feel free to look through my other pics too.

Let me know if the link doesn't work.

Thanks,
Emily

That actually looks like it was removed after the fact..

I got a little boy a joey at that, who was born with a microcornea, where he has an eye but the cornea is the size of a bb..

Now Jack came to me, very very scared and used to everyone protecting him, from his parents to his sibling then his cage mate.

as for moving things around in their cage, that is no problem, what is a problem however is like what was said is their depth perception, this weekend, jack was a gliding fool, he found out he could glide only a month or so ago, the woman he came from, could not believe the difference in his personality or his gliding, which he did do several times to her. he does not glide smoothly however, he has a wobble in all of his glides and he is very consistent with that. he doesn't glide far, a couple of feet, but at least he glides.

patience, love and lots and lots of understanding.. Jack has come around to be a great glider, you just got them, so give them time to get to know you and learn that they can trust you.allow him to move at his pace and by all means let him know you are the one that is coming each time, whether or not it is on the good side or bad. use a word or a phrase that doesn't change.. make that your hellos..

I also put him in a pouch protective pouch, he has become my pocket baby but still crabs and may nip if in a regular pouch like setting, whether it is my smaller pockets or a standard cage pouch. but that is the only time he does it now. so I have learned to avoid those situations that may make him seem fearful

I now have the half blind boy that Tracy was talking about and I believe he learned to glide before he loss part of his vision. His cage mate helps him out immensely. In fact, they both will glide from my hand onto the bed. Kerin did it first a few nights ago and of course, not to be out done, Lug followed suit. And I knew he knew how to glide since I watched him go from the top of the cage down to his hammock. The only time I have noticed any problem was when they first got into their new cage. He went to jump up to climb the cage and missed his jump by about an inch. He landed on his hammock so no harm done but you could almost see the puzzlement on his face like, "HEY did you see that cage wall move??? It moved back a few inches just to screw me up". The only thing solid in their cage though is their feed bowls. The rest is fleece, fleece and more fleece. These two even have 3 layers of fleece on the floor of the cage just in case of misshap. The more I watch and learn them though the more I'm realizing that he really isn't all that "special" needs. He can hold his own with the best of them so I'm trying not to hinder him from doing anything that "I" think he shouldn't. So if he wants to run and jump around the room, I'm starting to let him. I feel the more comfortable he feels about himself the better his overall life will be. And heck, it's not like my whole healthy gliders haven't had some bumpy landings and missed jumps.

Theresia,
I'm happy that he's adjusted so well. He looked so cute in the pics.
My little girl had her eye removed about 10 days ago. She's feeling well enough to get on the wheel again and she's gained some weight (which she needed to). She hasn't tried to glide yet but she's really quick at getting around the cage!!

Re: Rescue Glider with only one eye - 08/12/07 05:37 AM

I would love to, but once they are doing well on BML and have adjusted I will be adopting them out. The prospective owner will have to come over to my house at night and play with them in the tent for a few weeks (not every night, just about 3-4 times per week) until the boys get used to them and trust them. This will also let me talk to them and educate them and be sure that everything will work out with them.

I would love to keep them, but I am moving in October (getting married) and we may have to rent for a while, which means I can't take many animals. frown

Re: Rescue Glider with only one eye - 08/12/07 01:07 PM

Hi Maid....I am a rescue home in SC so let me know if you need any help placing them.

I had a little girl here that was IP when I got her mom and dad and she was born without an eye. She's crabby if approached on that side, but I think other than that she doesn't have any issues with it.

Re: Rescue Glider with only one eye - 08/14/07 06:10 AM

I'll take all the help I can get! lol.

I've had a few e-mails about these little guys, and one person actually passed the adoption application that I have everyone fill out, but he is having some computer trouble right now and the last time I got to speak with him he said that it would be a while and if someone else came along who could love them and take care of them before he could get them to let them have them and he would wait for another rescue or two.

Thanks!
Emily

PS - I think that we met over in Charlotte about two years ago. I had the two little male joeys and a female joey with me. It was at Paula's house.

Re: Rescue Glider with only one eye - 08/26/07 03:50 AM

Maidservant...

I also have a one-eyed glider! He came to me with two but ended up getting a really bad infection in his cheek which spread up behind his eye. He needed to have the eye removed when the infection wouldn't go away. When he first went in to surgery they said his eye was already partially ruptured at that point so out it came. It was permanently stitched shut and he was in an e-collar about a month before he would stop fussing with the stitches and whatnot.(This was in the past 4 months) But, alas, he is healed and has adjusted beautifully. He isn't quite as "trusting" of the branches he jumps to and won't jump as far as he used to, but he still gets around just fine smile I don't need to do anything special to the cage and most people don't even realize he only HAS one eye until I point it out. Don't worry, they do very well with one!
