Cracked fur

Cracked fur - 03/11/20 03:54 AM

I've recently adopted two gliders who appear to have cracked fur. Their previous owner "ran out of their staple". She claimed it was for 17 days. Could this be the cause? I've had a humidifier on periodically through out the day to see if it helped. They really don't look any better to me at this point.

Also they've really over groomed their eyebrows in their previous home. Is that possibly diet related as well?

Thank you in advance!

I see this is your first post. Welcome to GC!

17 days is a long time in glider life to go without their staple. Cracking can be from poor diet , "bed hair", and yes lack of humidity. If it's diet and/or humidity, it may take a few more weeks. Bed hair which basically means they haven't groomed since they woke up. I'm not sure if you can pet them yet, but if you pet them and it lays down, it's ok. If it feels lumpy, that's cracking.

Overgrooming eyebrows can be a few different things. It can be stress, or grooming habit of themselves or each other. Stress can be diet, new home with new smells, anxiety, boredom, they could be in pain or some kind of discomfort. It really depends on the extent of the grooming.

What diet have you chosen?

It would help if you posted a picture of them so we can see how their fur is.

Thank you, that's all pretty much what I had found in my research on cracked fur. Neither of them has particularly lumpy fur thankfully. I appreciate you pointing that out. Hopefully it will get better with time. I've been taking pictures of them to compare as time goes on. I'm hoping all is corrected by having a staple diet. I've chosen to go with Reeps. I really like that it doesn't have all the sugar that other staples have and my Male is allergic to eggs according to the previous family. She said he was anaphylatic. That's a good enough reason to me not to ever chance it.

As for the over grooming of their eyebrow area, they had that in their previous home. Perhaps there was something stressing them out there? In fact initially that was easiest way to tell them apart, as the Male is missing larger patches.

I'm going to to try again to post a picture. I tried to attach one here without success. Thank you for the pointers and the warm welcome. Very nice to meet you both!
