Green moss - 12/01/14 12:30 AM

Hi
I can't find anything about Green moss. Is it safe for gliders It's in bottom of their trees...outside of the cage, but they chew on the grass. I sent an email to the company, but didn't ask about chemicals..does anyone know if chemicals are usually sprayed in moss
Thanks

I wouldn't let them get to it. I would suggest getting some river rock, washing it, and replacing the moss with the rock. That would eliminate any potential health issues; plus it would save on them making a mess of the moss!

So is it on the list for toxic? Does anyone know. It's packed down so they really can't make a mess, and I'm sitting with them when they have access.

From your description it does not sound as if it is a live growing moss.

If this moss is around artificial trees and is loose but packed into the pots as a decorative filler - I would not let the gliders eat or play in it. It may actually be dyed green so you have no way of knowing what chemicals have been used on it.

I emailed the company and they use no chemicals or dyes and it's picked and dried. They said that people buy for their animals bedding.
So back to my question....does anyone know if moss is actually bad or toxic for gliders??

I'm honestly not sure.

Any explanation on how the moss is kept green after drying?

Another reason you may not want your gliders to play in the moss is that they WILL pee on it. The dried moss will quickly absorb the glider pee and eventually will begin to smell pretty nasty.

It's not in the cage, and their out only when I'm in the room. Once they get over the initial newness of the grass, trees were there before, they probably won't care.
I had some grass in there before and they walk over it, but don't really hang out there...but I'm sure there are dribbles everywhere...lol...I've looked on all the sites and I can find anything that mentions moss as toxic or safe.....but than they don't mention grasses either.
If you know anyone who might know for sure, or a site with the research..much appreciated.
