Opinion on Netting?

Opinion on Netting? - 08/31/16 09:09 AM

Question to some of the more experienced cage builders out there: I was planning on getting this netting from Amazon to build a cage. My current idea to frame it in sealed wood for rigidity, but my concern it a couple reviews said it was thin. Mine haven't been chewing on everything around them like a couple months ago, but still would like additional opinions. Thanks!

Visually this looks like the netting we used to build our cage. I hunted at many hardware stores and finally discovered Home Depot carries it. The roll was 34 dollars. I'm in Canada. Try hardware stores in your area first as the Amazon price seems high.

I don't recommend a wood structure as urine smell will also stay in it and your cage will be hard to clean especially in winter when there is no sun to dry it out. We ended up buying a portable metal wardrobe that was also on sale for 40 bucks at the hardware store. It worked awesome. It's big. Sturdy as heck. We removed some side shelves and voila. We added some handles on the outside to pack it outside for a hosing as needed. Unfortunately I've had no success in being able to post pics on this forum. If you want to message me privately with your email I can send you pics and ideas that way.

FYI. Zap straps. You will need lots in assorted sizes.

FYI. This is the same contractors mesh we then used to build our glider safe running wheels, a jungle gym and several other toys. Fleece weaves very nicely through the squares.

L.M.W.O.,

Thanks for your advice & tips, & thank you for the offer, I'll message you.

The reason I'm thinking wood is the layout of my house & it's just broken ol' me to move a very large cage around. I can build it like the last expandable table I built with alignment pins & latches to hold sections together tightly. That way I can make it modular for portability (& occasional rearrangement. I'll see if I can draw-out what I'm picturing, might make more sense that way.

If I seal the wood as well as that same table, very little should be absorbed (their kid spilled grape juice & left it a couple hours; mom said it wiped right off).

The problem I have with the hardware stores around here is I can't 100% understand everything on the label. I'd like to be careful.

I was reading your other post and thank you for referencing back to this post ( I haven't figured how to do that with 1 word, I need to figure that out.)

I was thinking about the 1/4" mesh just a few days ago and was concerned about if when built, poo and discardered food would properly drop through to the drop pan or just accumulate on the floor of the cage. It might be quite a challenge to clean too.

And yes, interpretation of the german language can be a challenge. And from what I remember, asking for help can be just as difficult. Finding stainless steel hardware unless it's in a universal package, the german translation could be a mile long, and be mis understood by only a few vowel misconfigurations. And then some things they use engish words because it just doesn't translate.

Good luck and pictures please if you take on this project.
