Travel/side cage

Travel/side cage - 05/26/17 06:09 PM

I posted this before more specifically on glide-ariums. Besides those what do people use for short multiple day trips? More specifically going to my parents for maybe 3-4 days or so? The big cage is too much hassle to take apart and put back up. I like the glide-atriums, but I think getting them out and not being able to attach anything to them without modifications of extras would not be great so I was looking more a smaller bird cage or something that I can keep there and pull out when I visit. Does anyone know of something or what they use or thoughts on that?

Glidariums have a PVC frame and you can either get some stainless shower curtain hooks or a fleece sleeve with a lot of loops to hang things from. You may want to ask if they happen to come with them.

I am currently using this for 2 gliders in our RV. I bought this before Dot came along and they were both joeys.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SK7HOYA/_encoding=UTF8?coliid=I16I18PYMU60OG&colid=3QX1LOWSOII16

I was told it would hold up to 3 gliders. I am looking for a replacement, it's awkward, I've already had to paint it, and honestly not worth the money.

I am looking for a replacement, but space is at a premium, and the girls get a lot of time outside this cage at night. It would do for only a few days at a time.

Has anyone had an actual experience with this product? Just found it and looks promising but real experience would be nice.....seems they provide bar pieces to attach inside as well.....

No I have not used this cage but it looks pretty cool!

I did order their sturdy cage for my two for home use. And I love it.

I would trust their judgement on the safety of this cage.

I have one of those, they work well. We stand them up on end, then you can put a full size wheel in the kennel.

Re: Travel/side cage - 05/27/17 04:02 AM

I also have ordered the lrg sturdy cage from them, and I have looked into that particular travel cage. I have considered it on and off for some time now. I currently have a Glide-arium, which I really like for a lot of reasons and it has served my gliders well for extended days (over 3 days), when traveling across country (twice).

However, I ordered the glide arium specific in size for my two girls that would fit well in my pop up camper. I then got a boy, which made three and I no longer have a pop up. Even so, they did all do fairly well on those extended trips.
But I still often consider these because I liked the idea of what they offer, I just haven't made up my mind to order one at this time.

So, after all that being said, I do think it's a worth while expense to go with if you do not already have another option. My dealings with Sun Coast Gliders has been very well, I also agree a trustworthy source.

My glide-arium set up for the road trip return across country.

The carrying travel cage (belted in car during travel) holds a sleeping pouch, water silo, and at meal time their food dishes. At night, the cage is placed in the glide arium with a fleece strip tied to the roof door so they don't get locked in or out. Fleece vines are wrapped around the top pvc pipes where toys can be hung.

Re: Travel/side cage - 05/27/17 03:20 PM

I like the glide-arium I just am looking at price and having something to attach the wheel to/have a sturdy holding point. My only other worry on this:height. I assume by the dimensions it's only 23 inches high, unless I stand it on its side, which means I negate the potty system they have.....could I just lay down fleece or newspaper? If I wanted to leave it laying sideways is 23 inches high enough? I've got 2 female joeys and I just want to make sure they are happy enough but I like this carrier a lot and it's compact which is awesome.
Side note: I'm looking/ thinking/contemplating a 3rd glider. If needed, could this be used as a quarantine cage? Doing all the switching of pouches and this is probably off in the future, but it would be nice to use it for both? Thoughts on that?

Thank you all. This is super helpful.

Re: Travel/side cage - 05/27/17 04:14 PM

As long as the wheel can spin freely it is tall enough. Pocket Pets starter cages are 18x18x24h.

Re: Travel/side cage - 05/29/17 01:42 AM

Some Glide-ariums can come with a wheel attachment, not that I'm pushing them, just saying some have it available. Also, if you look at my stand on my travel sized wheel, you will see that the back pvc on the floor lines up to the pvc on the bottom of the frame of my Glide-arium (it doesn't have to be in the corner). A reuseable zip ties were used to hold the wheel stable on first trip across country when it was anchored on the sofa in a motor home that we were transporting to AZ. On my move back to MD, I didn't have them inside the Glide-arium for the riding portion, only nights in the hotel rooms, so the wheel wasn't set up inside during travel. I can use mine vertically or horizontally, it depends on the space, and the setup needed.

Also, whether for Glide-arium or the collapsible crate style, travel enclosure you can use Jan's Custom Cage Liners. I've been considering ordering 2 sets to use vertically or horizontally for my Glide-arium. The only reason I haven't is because I've been considering looking for other options as well for travel to have a bit larger one (mine was custom to fit in pop up camper I no longer have).

As far as 23", you should be able to fit a travel sized wheel in there with floor stand as long as it has a low profile like the one I have.

Re: Travel/side cage - 05/29/17 03:11 PM

I'm not against a glide-arium by any means! I'm just thinking having to figure out ways to hang things and get everything built and set up plus the breakdown and possible leaving st my parents house a filing flat thing might be better.
That being said I really like the look of a glide-arium and I love the ease of setup, stuffy and ready to go and size especially. I'm very concerned about size for my girls. But then the price is also higher the bigger I go and the zipper opening means my girls might be able to run under my arm and escape.
I'm all over the place. I love the glide-arium, and I love the idea of the pop up if it works the way I think it will.....I'm so undecided!! But I do like the wheel fix, zip tie it to the bottom pole which takes that worry away if I go that route. I have a lot of fleece but I'll look into the liners too, since if I go with the arium it won't have a poop trY. And my girls are so messy.

Re: Travel/side cage - 05/29/17 03:38 PM

I understand, I love the Glide-arium that I have as well, yet at times I still consider a pop up version because it may be even easier to set up & transport, but I'm not sure of the ease of cleaning one of those, so it's a toss up for me. I do know that you can get pop up kennels in larger sizes, and even cheaper than the larger Glide-ariums, but you still need the creative ways to hang stuff. This makes it extremely challenging for me due to the one fact I deplore water bottles, so opt for silos, which are harder to accommodate in soft-sided enclosures. Using the travel-cage carrier helps with my feeding/water serving issues, but still not ideal. I'm working on perfecting my setup, but still undecided myself on whether to switch to a new travel enclosure. Although I do not have any travel plans in the near future, and haven't had any since my return from AZ where I took my gliders.

The setup from SunCoast looks very nice, and for what it includes in the package sounds like a decent deal. When you look for a travel wheel, look for a lower (but still safe) stand, the one I have is perfect for travel wheel. I have the voyager and size small, standared floor stand

Whichever you decide, the above should fit well. As you can see in my avatar, two gliders have been in this wheel at the same time, lol. It is small though, but they didn't mind sharing this wheel when used during travel and out of cage play time.

Re: Travel/side cage - 05/29/17 03:58 PM

It seems like we both are trying to find something perfect that doesn't exist yet haha. I like that there is a water bottle holder in the pop up one, but I do think cleaning inside could be difficult and a lot of wiping. I'm going to check out that wheel! Right now my girls have an attixworks wheel which they love but for travel again I'm unsure. They are still very young so it should be fine for now.
I keep planning on moving to silos but my girls seem to love their dish and pushing the bottle back and forth so I've left it in for fear or them just dumping a silo all over the place.

I'm gonna wait a bit until it's closer see what I can choose. There are so many choices and so many different options!!

Thank you for all you help too!!

Re: Travel/side cage - 05/29/17 08:36 PM

Yup, you're right on the head of the nail with that statement! I look and look and am always thinking of mods that would make the "perfect" travel enclosure that meets all my criteria. Any-who, I wish you the best of luck in your quest. I've been putting it off because I haven't had a real need as of yet, but I'm starting to think I'd rather be prepared when the time comes up. I do know I can go with what I have, just always in research of "perfection".

Not trying to be pushy about silos either, but they really shouldn't knock them around. I'm not sure of which "home" cage you have, but the silo itself can sit on the outside and only the bowl portion sticks through (usually), they're pretty stable that way.

But it is good to bounce ideas off each other on the board. Putting more minds behind things, could result in success grin

Re: Travel/side cage - 07/21/17 03:57 AM

Has anyone tried something since this thread was started? I'm about to make a cross country move from East coast to west coast and anticipate 6 days on the road in a moving truck. I can keep Soba on me during the day but I will have limited space and will need something pop up that can go in a hotel room without hotel staff really noticing.

I'm liking that pop up one Alan posted! Did anyone get it to try?

Re: Travel/side cage - 07/21/17 04:25 AM

I use a pop up kennel medium for dogs in hotels.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Pet-Kennel-Cr...ravel/477520942

It works great. It folds up to fit in suitcase or bag. Use a fleece blanket inside with C-Links to hang pouch.

When I considered the cage you were asking about:

http://www.sugar-gliders.com/glider-cages/24-collapsible-travel-cage.html

They were out of stock. So I bought the dog kennel instead. Paid $17+ for it and I like that it folds down to nothing. Just watch for loose threads and clip them.

Re: Travel/side cage - 07/22/17 04:06 AM

A lot of people use the pop up kennels. The one from SunCoast sounds awesome though, but you could always find a pop up kennel closer to that kind as well. It would cost a bit more. I've been back and forth with getting one, the kind that have the frame-work inside. I'd use that hardware mesh stuff and make the floor-grate and an accessory wall, or two. And then for good measure, I'd get a custom cage liner from Jana's Suggie Shoppe. But, on the other hand, my Glide-arium as worked well for me in the past for short-term use, even though it's kind of small for my trio, they don't seem to care as long as they have food, water, and wheel, and of course a pouch to sleep in. I've been wanting to order a cage liner for it, but have been waiting till I'm sure I'm not going bigger with a pop-up kennel. I guess because I'm not doing much traveling (none really ohwell), I'm not in a big hurry to make up my mind.

For me, there are pros and cons to both the Glide-arium and the pop up kennel, so I guess it's best to weigh your own needs, pros & cons to make a decision on what works best for you and your gliders.

Re: Travel/side cage - 07/25/17 02:08 AM

I'm sure it's a great choice. It certainly does look and sound like a wonderful option. We would very much appreciate your reviews on it after you've used it for your gliders, thanks.

Re: Travel/side cage - 07/26/17 03:28 PM

I haven't purchased mine yet so I would love to hear reviews of it, positive or negative!!! I really like it in theory I just don't know how it works overall!! Pics and reviews would be great seeing as in a few months I'll be need to travel my babies to meet my parents for the first time (they don't know I have gained a small menagerie this past year and a half so it should be interesting.....)

Please let us know!!

Re: Travel/side cage - 07/31/17 10:38 PM

Well, the size is definitely bigger than I really expected, but it folds up well and comes with an awesome carrying case!!

I think they forgot to add the elastic bands at the top on one side, so the plastic grate that the toys hang on is a little lopsided. I can always sew in some elastic though so I'm not particularly concerned.

I've had Soba go in to try it out and she's able to climb all around just fine. I think she's a little weirded out by the strange smell though. I'll give her another couple times to get oriented with it before we leave for the west coast! :-)

Re: Travel/side cage - 08/01/17 12:10 AM

Yes... Let her pee in it. And don't clean it. Be sure to use a dirty pouch and cage set pieces while traveling.

Dot hated her travel cage. She used to have issues with zippers too. After letting her pee in it a couple of times, she got over zipper noises, and redily goes in. She actually likes to go bye bye now. Fiona just wants to cuddle and sleep, so she doesn't care... oh I forgot... They also look forward to their apple slices or grapes that I tuck in their sleeping pouch with them just before we leave.

Re: Travel/side cage - 08/01/17 12:45 AM

Thanks for the update! Looking forward to a full review after return from trip, if you don't mind?

And yes, letting them acclimate prior to the trip is exactly the right thing to do. When I was preparing my glider's travel cage, I let them spend a night or two in it a couple of times prior to their first trip. And my girls were used to travel, as I was told by their former mom, and when I homed Ollie, he had also traveled frequently, even more so, so they're really good with it. It's been over two years though since they've been anywhere, but I'm sure they'd be fine on the next trip, whenever that may be.

Contact Lisa @ Suncoast and ask her about the elastic bands. I'm sure she will be more than happy to help you.

As for the smell, if you can leave it open for a while. Even use it for your dirty clothes hamper to get your smell in it wink That new smell should be gone in no time :thumb2:

I would also love to see a pic or two of it set up for the gliders, if that's possible.

So, SweetShampoo, how was your trip with the Suncoast travel cage?

I'm seriously considering an alternative to my kennel cage.
