External Links - 06/29/10 03:22 AM

At this time we are asking the members to no longer give or suggest photo resizing links, links to computer cleaners, links to free stuff. There have been many instances lately on the web where people are clicking those link and are getting virus warning, and such. Most of the time you do not have a virus, its a plot for you to by a program to remove the virus or malware thats not even on your computer.

The code causing this is not anyone fault nor is it coming from the particular site your on, it is on the linked site itself. I have fixed several sites lately that were injected with malware stuff on godaddy servers. Most of the time, the server and the site owners know it happened.

You can read about the godaddy issue here. Stuff like this is not just happening on godaddy its been happening a lot. I have heard reports of issues happening on photobucket sites and other free hosting places.

(computer stupid here Eddie, bear with me)

Just to get this straight. We can use photobucket but we can't post links to it? Or is it just links suggesting that someone use photobucket (or whichever) to resize photos?

Can we still post links to photos on photobucket?

Re: External Links - 06/29/10 03:34 AM

Right now its really to the free resizing and free tool sites. Those are largely targeted. I have no confirmation, but have heard similar complaints that similar thing happened on photo hosting site.

If you want to link to photos on photobucket you can. I am not saying there is anything wrong with them, just please be cautious and if anyone notices something weird happening after clicking on any link, please contact me or any of the staff with the post that contains the link and it will be removed.

Ok, another question.

A few days ago, someone said they tried to look at the link for Reep's diet and was told it had a virus. I went to the site (since it is mine) and found nothing. Could this be the same thing going on?

Eddie, have you seen anything like this on sites that give free web hosting? Last week I had a few weird things happen when I clicked on my free webs (NOT by business sites)
the screen whited out and froze the computer for a second or two then went away. I do not understand computer language and wouldnt know what a virus looks like. my hubby and son tried my free sites and no problem, and at work they were fine too. my son thinks it was a java update issue thingy as a java symbol kept popping up.
i did scan my computer and did a restore thing and it has been fine since then.

what ya think?

why do people do this???

Eddie, one other thing...what exactly does the virus do?

Re: External Links - 06/29/10 12:40 PM

The internet certainly is a dangerous place.

Eddie, which OS do you use? Linux? I was thinking about going to Ubuntu, but I upgraded to Win7 and have been pretty pleased with it thus far.

JillMarie, people do it for money. Some people implant malware to steal your passwords to any accounts you may have (I play World of Warcraft and there's a HUGE problem with account thefts from malware). Some people implant a code to give you pop-ups for ads.

We recently had a virus implanted in our (wired) router. My bf forgot to turn the security on it and someone planted it there. Anytime we tried to click on a link, it would pop up a new window and take us somewhere completely unrelated to where we wanted to be directed.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of viruses and they all do various things.

Thanks for the heads up, Eddie. smile

I've always thought, if a person had the intelligence to create a virus, why couldn't they put their smarts to good use and solve some major problems?

No doubt Connie! I agree.

Re: External Links - 06/29/10 01:37 PM

Because some of those companies pay A LOT of money to these people to do what they do. And, unfortunately, it's all about money these days. frown

I've actually heard some companies that, if you get their virus on your computer, the only way to get it off is to pay them for their 'virus removal' software.

Re: External Links - 06/29/10 05:29 PM

Does anyone use Facebook? My account was attacked. Friends were emailing me saying check your account I know you didn't send this. When I looked it was sending out video's stating "Watch me in this!"

One of my husbands friends emailed me saying he knew I didn't send it and he couldn't get it open. I just laughed cause he was trying to look at it. Weirdo!

Facebook did notify me and I changed my password. No problems since.

Re: External Links - 06/30/10 04:22 AM

Also if you run Google chrome, as I do, sometimes it will tell you a place is unsafe and hosts viruses, most often this is caused by advertisements from Google or other ad hosting sites that are on the site have been reported suspicious. So it really isn't the WEBSITE it's the advertisements on the website that are being reported to you as dangerous. Just figured I'd let ya'll know that. smile

you should be fine as long as u dont download a infected file and if a virus scan pops up and its oot the same exact type as the one installd on it ignore it

Also, always make sure that your anti-virus program has been updated with the latest anti-virus definitions at all times.
