is Nickel really safe?

is Nickel really safe? - 03/26/06 03:46 PM

Hello everyone,

Being from Canada, i am having a hard time finding any pvc-coated mesh to build cages, i do however have so many reseller of galvanized hardware cloth.. don't panic! i'm not so crazy as to accept this toxic material. My question is this: Has anyone ever given thought on nickel-plating the mesh? I know it can be done as i work in a metal shop. Many parts are nickel-plated(i.e. clips to hang toys with) so i got to wonder about it. I'm going to get quotes tomorrow from the plating manufacture we do business with and will let you know if it is even worth it.

Well bad news today, i did reach the plant, and they do not do this kind of job there, instead they recomended another company which i haven't been able to reach today. So far i have learned it is possible to have the galvanised treatment stripped off the mesh, then nickle-plated.

All that is left now is to get a quote on the whole deal or better yet getting my hand on non-galvanized mesh; For those who wonder why i am going to such great length on this topic is because i wish to build custom cage 100% safe for the gliders, easily assembled and best of all, modular. I'll post more info on the 'why' later on as the quotes starts coming in.

well, i guess it's belly-up for this venture, i can't seem to get any reasonable price quote! Until i find other suppliers, there is nothing bigger than standard cage sizes for me. Thanks for reading on this little project of mine!

Have you looked into having your cage powder coated?

i have thought about it, and will contact many paintshop in the near future. I had wished to be able to build myself one shiny-clean looking cage before i went to pick up my two furballs, but i will instead wait and buy myself a 'small cage (20x20x48) untill i can find a safe way to build them a good cage.

thanks for your reply <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumb.gif" alt="" />
