Reptarium

I have a few questions about Reptariums. For one, I saw this: http://www.reptilehavenonline.com/cgi-bin/supplies.cgi?p=reptariums On that page they have soft trays?? Would these be useless with sugar gliders? people have told me they just put fleece at the bottom and switch it out every couple of days. Also, I know reptariums are a problem if gliders chew alot, but do they catch nails badly? Also, I know that I can hang links to put toys on, but where would I put their wheel and toys that screw through the wires of a cage like their branches??

I don't think you would be able to screw anything into a reptarium.
I am not sure if those trays will help because I don't know what they look like when they are on the bottom of the cage. The reptariums are a lot harder to clean than a regular cage .
I have a reptarium that I use for reptiles and their claws never get caught in the wire of the cage but I am not sure about gliders claws.

I love my reptarium and the softtray is great and easy to clean. I still lay a fleese blanket in there but their "business" doesn't go through and it gives them somewhere to hide. I just throw it in the washing machine and it is so easy to move around because it's light. There are posts on reptariums that people have bought, modified, etc. and that's how I made my decision to buy.

NP I have bought about 6 from Chris she is a total doll! Helped me with my first squirrel too.

I understand the soft tray goes around the outside of the frame then the screen goes on. to me "to much work" lol

Can anyone think of a "test" to see if your gliders are chewers? Mine will strip leaves off of fake plants or nibble on their toys a bit, but they don't chew like they used to, and I really would like a Rept. but not if they'd chew through them.

Sorry if that didn't sound right at all. I just worked out and I'm like "ARG!" and sleepy. Hehe.

If they tear apart toys with wood on them or something with wood in their cage, or if you have a bonding pouch with a window and they bite at it, and of course, if they go through toys quick...that's a good sign they are nibblers <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

Never had any nails get caught in our reps. Toys are easy to attach if you have some shower curtain rings (to hook on the PVC) and rope/chain to string around from ring to ring. Then all toys can be hung from the rings... Kinda makes it nice because you can remove the mesh without disturbing your toys.

Its not my favorite cage. But for the price, you wont find another cage so large as the 260g. I dont even think you could make one that cheap.

BTW, i have critters that do not chew on any toys, but they like to chew a little on the rep... So sometimes you just have to try and see. I dont think mine would ever figure out they could chew threw it.

Kayla--How do you hook your wodent wheel in the reptarium?? I didn't really get a good look at it and I'm not sure how I would do it.

Mm. I wish I had like, a test piece of rept material to see if Skittles and Stitch would chew through it. I REALLY want a Rept. So much cage for the money. I know they'd love the space.

I have a great setup for the reptarium. You should really get the soft tray, They keep everything in. I took these things (picture attacted) and pre-drileld them into the tubes. This works great and can put toys, pouches, whatever! Works great and is very easy. All you need is a power drill and a small bit.

that's a great idea Luis!! i was wondering if anyone had ever thought of (or tried) using grommets (i think thats what theyre called) and actually attaching thing to the mesh? thats what i was gonna do when i planned on getting a rept. but then i got a cage instead.

Sugary--I don't think grommets would work..I have a grommet machine since I used to make rennaisance outfits, and I found that they don't stay well on thin fabrics...much less mesh types...although, I'm going to fiddle with that idea and see if I can think something up. Thanks!

well if it would work its an okay idea... i have this purse that has these super heavy-duty grommets on it that actually gave me the idea, it had this charm hanging on it and i was gonna toss the purse but i wanted the charm and i tried and tried and tried and could not get the grommet off or open for my life i finally just gave up and cut the whole corner off fabric and all hahah

lol Sugary! Yea those suckers stay on their good with heavy fabrics.

I have 2 of the 260 g reptariums that I bought from Reptile Haven in CA. I paid $89.00 total to my door each. I used to hang my Stealth Wheels and now I just set them on the fleece blanket I use for the bottom. I keep 2 Stealth wheels in each cage. I also use the 'glider kitchens' as well.
Daily I just take out their kitchen and shake out the fleece blanket and wash as needed.
I use some of the same ideas as Kayla.
I wash / rinse my rep in the bathtub. I feel it is less stress on the mesh. I let it drip dry and set it back up. Much easier than my reg cage and so much larger. My gliders all run all over it with ease. No snagging. I also keep real apple tree branches in there for them to chew on. I feel it is a great vaue for the money and so roomy. Besides it is easy to clean.
BTW I see no need for the soft tray for the gliders. JMO

I set my wheel on the floor... However, i have used the shower curtain rings and rigged it to hang upside down on the PVC. It is do-able. Zip ties would probably work a little better.

I agree with Hazyl, no need for the soft-trays. The fleece on the bottom soaks up what little pee gets down there.

you just reminded me, Hazyl..I don't use a food flinger glider kitchen...the only thing my gliders fling is BML, and I don't feed that anymore. Is there anyway to attatch other types of food bowls to the frame or the cage?? My gliders pretty much refuse to go to the bottom third of the cage. There could be a mountain of meal worms and they wouldn't go near it, so if I put their food on the bottom I think they'd just stare at it.

I have heard that some people use those powder coated shelving pieces and make shelves for thier food dishes. If you are handy with wood, you could make a corner type shelf with two back walls, then use maybe those metal clamps that you tighten with a screw driver to hook onto the PVC? Use your imagination... Once you have a rep, You will get lots of light bulbs to figure out how to make it work for you. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

My babies do not fling their food either, but i do like to use a glider kitchen/food flinger to keep the pee and yuckies out of it when they play above the bowls. It always grossed me out to find poop in the food dishes every morning... YUCK... Poor babies had to pick around their poop to eat!

ewww...thanks for the advise Kayla, I am a bit handy and like to create things, so I'm sure I'll figure something out!

Another thing you might try if you have a drill is to drill holes through the pvc used and then mount the ferret food dishes there. I use those in my cages and they work quite well. I started using them cause my gliders would sit on the edge of their dish and tip it over and then I wasn't sure how much food they were actually getting to eat.

I use tie wraps to hang everything in my reptariums. I went to the hardware store and bought plastic hardware cloth and attached it to the frame with zip ties. Then you can hang anything you want from the hardware cloth...inluding wheels, food dishes, pouches etc. I have had a problem with the original reptarium piping cracking...so I have gone to just ordering the screen enclosure and building my own pvc frame. Its A LOT cheaper and durable.

For a water bottle be sure to buy the one that has a little loop hole on the top so you can hang it with a twist tie or tie wrap. These are a little harder to find and I have found a little more expensive but it is all worth it for these guys!!!!

I just place my reptarium on top of some puppy pads and this catches any liquids that are going to leak through. When they are soiled you can just throw them away and place new ones down!

I would like to see a picture of the hardware cloth. I cannot invision that.

I have pictures in the post cage interest? but in that picture it is gutter guard instead of plastic hardware cloth....the only difference is that the holes are smaller!

Wow, that is the best Price. Someone said they clean in the bathtub. How else do you clean them? I only use mine for travel.

i wash mine in the washer but hang to dry. esty7 OMG that is a great price!

I wash mine in the washer on the delicate cycle.
I feel it gets a lot cleaner than any cage does, even after hours of scrubbing, plus it is so much easier.

Ya it is the lowest price I have found so far, when you buy as many as I do a couple of dollars makes a big differance.
He is currently working on getting them to us at even a lower rate, basicaly the more he sells the cheaper he gets them.
If you are using them for rescues be sure and let him know, he will help you out even more.

For those who are worried about a glider chewing through the reptarium mesh; The reinforced nylon is stronger than aluminum screen cages, so I wouldnt worry too much about it being chewed through. Unless you have a crazy mad biter...

I have heard of a couple gliders chewing holes through the repts. It has taken some time to do, but if they continue chewing on one spot than eventually they will get that hole they are trying for.
Hopefully by the time that happens you will have noticed it and can stop it.

I just set mine up to see how it would work for travel. I would like to see a pic of the hardware cloth too!

I just got my Reptarium this week, I planned on making it my weekend travel cage. Well I put it together and thought that i would see how my babies like it, so I put it inside our tent this evening and both gliders were chewing the outside of the rep, like crazy. I have never seen them chew on anything with the exception of me, should I get a diffrent type of travel cage or will this chewing subside? Yes, it is because of the new smell. rub a pouch that they have been in all over it.

I have a reptarium, you can hang things like you do in the cage by using styro foarm....just get 2 pieces of string and hang styrofoam from the top side of it and them stick things through it. There's a bunch of ways you can hang things. You just have to be creative. I know a bunch of ways to make shelves and hang things. As for soft trays I just use fleece at the bottom of it. My babies love their 260g reptarium. They're nails never have gotten caught. Hope I helped. =)

skylar i dont think you should have styro foam in your cage. its highly dangerous. if your gliders chew on it or digest it it could be fatal. i would take it out immediatly and find a new way to hang stuff

You can also use plastic cable ties around the frame pieces. I wouldn't use styro inside the cage, either, but outside a reptarium, if that's what you mean, by poking things thru the netting to it, might work, since the gliders couldn't chew on it that way.

I got my reptarium a few days ago and set it up and found that with some of the smaller hooks i could just hook them directly through the netting. Is this ok or will it tear it or not support the gliders weight?

I think it will be OK if you are careful not to break the nylon strands of the webbing when you hang it. Hope so anyway, no guarantees implied!
