Gliders getting burned during a neuter. - 03/13/19 02:12 AM

I have permission from both owners to copy and paste their stories here for our information.

Both had gliders that got flash burns during a routine neuter by a vet with a cauterizing knife. Thankfully the first survived and healed up. He did lose his ears. The other glider just got burned the other day so that will be an ongoing post in this thread.

I will start the next post on this thread with the first glider to get burned and survived.

How often does this happen vet said there was a flash and he got signed..... they shaved his face. He got burned during neuter.
We put the cone on him because I saw him grooming his arms and just didn't want him to over groom it.

Update after further observation I've noticed that he's not using his right paw and its a little puffy he's still eating and drinking normally i'll be working on setting up a camera to see how active he is at night.

They didn't give me anything to put on him for the Burns just eye ointment and pain meds the honey would be safer then any ointment in my opinion especially if he tries to lick it off the honey wont hurt him.

Hes doing good starting to use his hands when moving around I'm gonna leave the cone on for a few more days and then see how he does without it probably Monday.

I am taking care of him on my own if I feel like I need to go back to the vet I will take him He currently has the eye cream the pain meds and burn ointment The eye ointment and the burn ointment are applied 3 times daily and I was advised pain medication once a day.

These are taken from the entire thread on Facebook. Here is a link to the thread in Sugar Glider Fanatics: Burned Sugar Glider

This happened on October 24, 2018 and he went to his new home on or about November 6, 2018.

I have posted some pictures, on Facebook there are videos of him. He looked worse a day or so after the initial burn and that is to be expected, things swell up and crust over and ooze. It is the nature of a burn.

This is the second glider that got burned, he was neutered March 11, 2019. He has a lot of healing to do. He is owned by Hope, I have edited out information that isn't pertinent.

This can be a learning experience for us all. All involved feel terrible. Especially my vet. They are doing right by putting his care 1st.
Billy made it thru the night! I just took his cone off and am giving him wambaroo and apple sauce, then meds and cone may have to go back on. He has little sneezes.

His story can be seen on Facebook in Sugar Gliders ABC's and 123's Billy's story

There is some video footage of him eating, which is great. I have posted some pictures of him. too.

This is posted here for us to learn.

Accidents like this happen, even to people in the operating room.

What is important is that a glider can survive this with proper care, pain management and burn management.

Update on Billy.

Billy is more swollen and I was scared I was going to loose him lastnight so I put his sister with him. She was scared of him and he still can't see so I cried as he was reaching for her and she ran from him. After about 40 minutes they were cuddling. She was able to give him the affection and heat that I couldn't. I'm going to try to get into the vet to check his breathing tomorrow, it's a bit high pitched. He had a great appetite.

He is doing good, the hair is growing back and his eyes are open a little and he can see big things. He looks like he is going to lose part of the one ear. But he is progressing in his healing.

Here is another update on Billy, she does talk about other gliders and a hedgehog before she gets to Billy. But he is looking so good. His eyes are open a little further. She is still unsure about his vision.

Update on Billy on Facebook.

Just wanted to update you all on Billy. He is doing amazing in my eyes. The hair is growing back in on his face. The one ear is a little smaller because of the burns. They feel that his eyesight is diminished but he can see some stuff.

Here is a link to her page, you don't need to be friends with her to see the videos. Ab Fab Pet

The latest video starts out with a joey, then on to Billy.
