Adding another female to a breeding pair? - 01/13/17 11:24 PM
Currently I have 2 breeding pairs. My one produced a leu, which I posted a thread on a few weeks back. Well, I've decided to keep her (named her Pax) and for the heck of it I virtually paired her with my male glider (Eros) in the other cage since he's leu het. Their potential offspring would have a low inbreeding percentage (1.3%). I have my platinum (Cordelia, whom is Pax's "aunt") with Eros right now, although they haven't produced any babies yet. I would really love to place Pax with them and have a breeding trio but I'm unsure how I would go about this. At this current time Cordelia is over a year old and Eros is roughly 6 months old, while Pax is only four weeks (she is still with her parents and won't be separated for awhile, even then she wouldn't be placed with Eros until 10-12 months old (I normally wait for 12 months as a personal preference))
So, back to my question, how would I go about introducing Pax to the pair? Since they don't have any joeys yet should I pull Cordelia from Eros, place her in a new cage with Pax (once Pax is old enough to be moved from her parents) and then introduce Eros back to them when Pax is old enough? Or should I leave Cordelia and Eros together and introduce Pax to them as a pair gradually over the course of a few weeks once she is old enough to be bred? I do understand that it would be easier to get Pax her own mate but I really don't want a fourth enclosure aside from a temp one (my third cage one has an adopted and surrendered pair). However, that being said, I wouldn't put Pax with them if it proves to put her or the other at risk.
And with that being said, if I do buy a new glider to mate with Pax I would want a mosaic. Is that a bad idea? To pair a leu and a mosaic? I know breeding the same color upon color (like leu x leu) is frowned upon, but would a leu and mosaic be OK even if it's a leu mosaic?
I hope I wasn't talking in too many circles! Any help is appreciated. Or even experiences of having a breeding trio.
