It never rains but it pours!

It never rains but it pours! - 09/21/16 09:50 PM

shakehead
Took in 6 gliders two weeks ago, 5 needed to be neutered. They were in bad shape. One passed away over the weekend, making 4 to be neutered.

Took them in yesterday, they can now point it at anybody, it shoots blanks.

Got home from that vet visit to an email from the Dane County Humane Society. They got in 5 gliders that were left by a dumpster. tant

One passed away, the others are a female and 3 males. All the boys need to be neutered and one needs his tail amputated.

Dropped the tail amputation off at the vet, they will do surgery tomorrow and I will pick him up Friday.

For the first time in over 7 years of rescuing, I had to ask the Wisconsin people to help with his surgery. Had I known about him in the morning, I would have cancelled the 4 neuters to use that money for the amputation.

Time to work on getting 501c3 status.

Terry you have your own rescues to take care of. The Wisconsin people are stepping up to the plate.

You are the patron saint of sugar gliders, Feather. That is a lot to take on. Breaks my heart that those poor fluffies were left by a dumpster. :\ I hope all goes well with helping them recover. Glad you were able to get some funding... that's quite the glider pack.

Kimberly and Terry, you both are awesome, and there are several other members here that help gliders in need.

I hope all goes well for your gliders and hope you funding is adequate enough to help.

Mechnut, I think you are not alone! I would be a rescue too if we didn't travel with our job. Our 5th wheel just isn't big enough! Plus we travel to visit grandkids from Kansas City to the Carolinas. And they would all have to tag along.

Although I could be part of the railroad... I do have room for 1 more cage... Hum...

Feather,

Is there a list for rescues here somewhere? Or a national place where one could donate bedding/ money and be properly disbursed for the greater cause?

Re: It never rains but it pours! - 09/24/16 01:39 AM

I have set up a vet fund at my vet for the Wisconsin Sugar Glider Sanctuary and Rescue.

It is Spartan Animal Hospital 608-838-6115.

I do take in gently used bedding from people here in Wisconsin. It does make for mis matched cage sets but it gets people started.

There is no national group that I know of, just some in some states like GA, TX, AZ, there is one out in North or South Carolina, can't remember what state.

I have taken in gliders from as far as South Dakota.

I am so upset, I don't know whether to scream or cry. The little guy that had to have his tail amputated passed away some time yesterday while I was at work.

He was fine when I left and my glider sitter, Darin, found him dead when he came to feed.

We are not sure how long his tail was degloved or how long the cage was outside by the elements before they were found and taken to the humane society.

I know they were there at the humane society for a week before I picked them up.

Some people shouldn't have pets, not even pet rocks.

I'm sorry to hear that. I know it must be tough on you seeingg and caring for so many homeless and sick gliders. At least he had you caring for him in the end and wasn't left by the dumpster until the end or moved to the landfill.

You are a great person to care so much for these little suggies.

But think about all those little ones suffering--who you SAVED. Don't forget them. :-) You gave them hope and love and life where there was only despair and suffering before.

So sorry Kim... I've been hit and miss on here and missed how things were going. :tant2:

We've been in KC for a week, was wondering how your rescues were doing.

Marking to keep better tabs...

How's everyone else?

After losing that one with the tail amputation, we are waiting for a few weeks before we neuter the other boys.

Just introduced two other rescues that will be going to a new home next Saturday.

Had three come in this last Wednesday, all girls, they are being fostered by a gal in IL.

I hope I can find homes for all of them soon.

Wife still after me to rehome the trio we got in( I have kept erasing the post lol ) I hope all goes well Kim. We still holding our breath waiting on all the pocket pet gliders we are betting to flood our area in the next 2 months.

You should try counseling the owners and see if you can get them to keep their gliders with a little one one one education.

Re: It never rains but it pours! - 10/03/16 10:39 AM

lol I have tried with several other glider owners over the summer and it been a little mixed results. I always offer here and links to other places for proper wheels and for questions I don't know ( since i dont breed) but sadly I not seen any new Delaware member joining.

Hope you feel better soon. Whatever 'it' is seems to be all over the country. It has gone through our family as well including the grandchildren. No fun at all shakehead

So Feather, how are your latest rescues doing? Is everybody healthy?

How is their temperment?

Are they people social?

Re: It never rains but it pours! - 10/23/16 04:43 AM

I had four girls go to a new home today, the family that adopted them does a lot of educational venues.

Most of their venues are with snakes, reptiles, tortoises, turtles and big bugs.

The girls will join the hedge hog once they are bonded with the family.

I have two going to a new home tomorrow, hopefully.

That leaves a single female, she is a handful. Her former family let her have free run of the second bedroom and she has a wild hare up her butt.

There is a cage of 4 that needed to be neutered when they came. Their neuters are done and the female did manage to slip one in, so there will be a joey. These are tentatively adopted.

Then there are the three that came in with the one that passed, they will be getting neutered.

There are two that came in on Wednesday, thankfully they are already neutered, their family had a baby and they have been getting the back burner for attention.

Of the three that are fostered out the single glider has been introduced to one of her gliders after its buddy passed away last Monday. The other two girls need a home, one is a bit nippy.

Hopefully I can get those all adopted out, I like empty cages.

With what you have had to do the last few weeks, I would like empty cages too!

Thank you again for what you do!

Another sad case was relinquished Saturday. I am so glad my vet has me well stocked and I was able to get him on a broad spectrum antibiotic right away.

Just got back from his vet appointment, he hasn't lost and eye like they thought, we got them both cleaned up and the hole in his head looks good as does the one in his cheek.

He now gets two different oral antibiotics and an antibiotic eye drop for each eye.

He is skin and bones and weighs 74 grams. At least he is alert and bright. He runs in the wheel, even when both eyes were crusted shut.

Will give updates as we go.

Now that is a trooper! Please, look forward to hearing his progress!

Poor little one. So glad he has you.

He is so good. Doesn't crab, doesn't bite. I just can't get over how skinny he is. No meat on his sharp little hip bones.

I am going to fatten him up. He needs a good 30 grams or more in my book.

We are beyond pouring right now. I had 8 plus come in Saturday, need to check for joeys and do their nails, not to mention figure out how many need neuters.

Last night at midnight I was at the airport to pick up 15, possibly a plus in there, gliders. Eight of which need to be neutered.

Aaaaaannnnnnnnnd! I have 8 more coming next Sunday, one of which needs to be neutered.

I need to marry a vet!

Re: It never rains but it pours! - 08/08/17 05:48 AM

Oh my gosh! Where do they all come from?

Are these 3 colonies? (That would be easier, right?)

I'm trying to do the math just in food... Per day... Plus how many did you have?

You know we love stories when you have time... smile

Re: It never rains but it pours! - 08/08/17 06:53 AM

So I did the math. If you feed CL, that will be almost 2c a day, plus almost 4c of f/v per day added to what you already prepare... When I do my math for 2 gliders, that's like over 2 weeks worth of food for my two. And you wull be feeding that in 1 day... Wow...

The following is nonsense, but:
I let my mind drift over this and thought how cool it would be if you had a place where volunteers could stay... Like a dude ranch. Where people could come in and help out, and pay you to be there. Learn how to care for gliders, and see what it's like when gliders are unloved and abandoned. But that in itself would be a full time job of training, supervising... Ok, never mind. You have enough on your plate! Plus living in an apartment...

Anyway, thoughts and prayers. If there is anything I can do to help, let me know...
