Help!! Hole in Glider's side!!!!

Help!! Hole in Glider's side!!!! - 01/31/07 04:44 AM

I got two gliders 3 weeks ago. They came together and have lived together most of thier lives. While feeding tonight I noticed that Sneak has a huge hole in his side. They have been fussing the last couple of nights but I had not noticed them fighting. The hole is massive and there is not a vet in my area that specializes in gliders. I have boiled it out w/ peroxide and filled the hole with antiboitic ointment. Snatch (my other glider) keeps putting his noise in Sneaks side. Not eating but snelling.
What can I do? Please help!!!!!

First of all, separate the gliders immediately. Snatch will most likely bother the wound and make it worse.

Second, I would not add any more perioxide or ointment to the wound. You need to make sure your glider Sneak does not lick off that ointment or he could get very sick. If it was my glider I would probably put an e-collar on it to make sure it didn't bother the wound. There are directions for making an e-collar probably on the health and hygiene page.

Thirdly, you need to get that glider to a vet immediately. Doeos not matter if it is not glider experienced, even a non-glider experienced vet will be able to treat the wound and add stitches if necessary. If the wound is as bad as you say your glider will require stitches...exactly how bad/big is the hole? Is it still bleeding? You need to get it into a vet tonight; if it is a large wound your glider can go downhill quite fast. I would not wait until morning.

Best of luck, please give us more info and keep us posted.

Here is the link to the page about e-collars, once you have the rest of the situation under control (gliders separated, Sneak is not licking/going after wound) I would recommend putting an e-collar on. Gliders frequently will chew/lick/go after sources of pain, so you need to make sure Sneak does not cause any more damage to the wound.

1. separate them immediately

2. put on an e-collar

3. get him to a vet...any vet

There are several suggie vets available for phone consultation if necessary.

If he can reach the wound with his mouth he will continue to chew on himself. That is why he needs to be in an e-collar.

Please keep us updated.

I have separated them. Sneak is in his pouch. My husband is getting another cage now. I am calling vets too.

The hole is aprox. 1/8 inch around and almost that deep. it is bad. I freaked! It is not bleeding and he is not bothering it himself.

I am going to make an e collar now.
Thank you so much for all of your help!

No prob, please keep us posted.

Ecollars can be tough to get on so you may need your hubby to help. Even if you can't get ecollar on just make sure he is not bothering the wound until you can get him to the vet and then the vet can help you put one on (will probably be necessary I imagine with the wound you are describing).

I would not leave Sneak alone in the pouch as he could go after the wound in there and you wouldn't see him doing it. Not until you get the ecollar on anyways. I would hold him in a towel, keep him warm, and get him right in to the nearest vet.

Let us know how it goes.

Dont bother calling vets, just find the nearest 24 hour emergency vet you can and get in your car and go. Most of the time on the phone they will say they dont know anything about them. Tell them to do some phone consults. If they need a number have them call my vet Dr. Tim Tristan his number is 361-994-1145 he is also a 24 hour er vet clinic and does phone consults with other vets.

Please keep us posted.

By the way, Welcome to GC.

I am so glad you found us.

Please keep us posted.

I am moving this to Health and Hygiene where you will get more responses. It will leave a little pointer in ER that will take you to your post.

Godspeed to the vet.

The most important first thing you can do is prevent him from doing more damage. Either with an ecollar or you can take a peice of fleece about 12 inches square and wrap him up like a burrito (like wrapping a new baby). Hold him so he can't get to the wound. Do NOT let him out of your sight. They can do major damage in just a few minutes and the more damage he does, the harder for him to heal and recover.

second...get him to a vet. Make sure you ask the vet for an antibiotic and a pain med. If they are in pain, they will self mutilate.

If you can get an ecollar on him, you can then put the anti bacterial ointment on the wound.

Please let us know how things are going.

If this wound is on the side of the neck, he won't be able to get to it himself, but should be separated from partner. The partner licks and chews it until it eats to the bone. That is why you have to separate. An ecollar is not needed if the wound is on the neck because he will not be able to reach his own wound. I cannot tell by the names of your gliders if this is a male female pair. Many times in breeding there will be these types of wounds to fight off not wanting to breed. Please keep us posted on this. We are very concerned for you.

Have you checked your cage to insure there is nothing that could have harmed him? Are their other gliders in the room who possibly might be breeding? Many time when males are together and intact and a female is in the room, they fight because they smell her in heat. If this is not the case, I would suspect one got cut or hung on a toy or object sticking out in the cage.

I'm going to second never putting ointment (like neosporin) or peroxide into any hole or puncture type wound. The peroxide will dry it out and prevent healing, and kill all the bacteria, including the good bacteria, essentially making it easier for infection to get in. When the medicinal uses of ointment are done, the base of it makes a perfect medium for bacterial growth. It gets stuck in puncture type wounds, and is never recommended.
This glider does need to see a vet, ASAP.
There is a vet you can go to. Check the vet directory, or the state role call and see who lives by you.
