I can't believe I'm here again

I can't believe I'm here again - 12/28/07 06:24 AM

Lilo's little boy left us tonight at 10:55 pm. I went down at 8:30 to feed everyone and get one of the cages out for playtime. I heard a faint little wheeze and hurried to check the babies. Lilo's boy was at the bottom of the cage, freezing cold. He was breathing, so I hurried and got him warmed. His tummy was empty, so while he was in my bra, I got his formula ready. Took afew little sips. Kept shaking badly like a seizure. Kept him warm, started doing chest rubs. He perked up abit, so I went and got Lilo and tried to get him to nurse. She was trying to clean him, but he was too weak to latch on to the nipple. I put Lilo in my shirt to be by his scent and tried the formula again. After 2 1/2 hours of fighting the poor little guy just gave up. I did mouth to nose and some very tiny chest compressions, but he died in my hand. Lilo came out and said goodbye. He will be buried under the same tree as the other little angels I lost acouple weeks ago.

I just don't understand it. I went thru my paperwork and I have had 30 joeys born here. Lost one last Thanksgiving Day (2006), to a birth defect. Now Star's twins to canibalism and Lilo's boy ??? He was perfect. All I can think of is, about a month and a half or so ago, I switched diets. Everyone is so down on the ensure diet that I was using, I went with one with a wambaroo base, I will not say what diet. But I am going back to the ensure tonight! 26 sweet, fat, healthy joeys on Ensure and 3 perfect little joeys lost on the new diet. I think I'll take the chemicals.

T, I'm so sorry this has happened to you! Losing a glider is tragic.

IMO, it probably had nothing at all to do with the diet so don't beat yourself up. Our gliders were on a diet (proven) and we lost joeys also. I did switch to PML which has the HPWombaroo and everything has been fine since. I don't believe it was diet related at all as others use the diet we WERE using and their joeys were fine.

They are such fragile little creatures to begin with and what we see as normal to us may not be. People pass away everday that look as if nothing is wrong with them. It hurts, it's sad but a fact of life. (one I hate)

There is sooo much we don't know about gliders, this is a big part we don't know a lot about.

Prayers and HUGS for you and Lilo. She is grieving too, comfort eachother.

T. I am so sorry you lost the little one.

When babies become so dehydrated their little systems shut down so trying to handfeed one in that condition is nearly impossible.

Have your vet show you how to Sub-Q fluids under the skin. This is the only method that can save a baby when in the state you found your little one. Purchase a bag of Lacted Ringers or Normal Saline with 5% Dextrose added to it. It will keep for a year in the frig.... after that through it out and purchase a new bag. Baby given several injections of it over a period of three hours or so and the little one should be willing to eat. Keep baby warm.

My guess is for some reason the mother did not have enough milk this time around. Monitor her more closely with babies in the future.

Sending you a big hug. hug2

Thank you.

Judie, I will go see my vet today about the sub Q lessons. I was planning on having him come over and do a quick check on everyone this week since I have 3 more moms due within a month. I'm such a nervous wreck now. cry Hubby asked if he needs to move a bed down to the family / glider room. I didn't realize it, but he said I was up 6 times last night to check on my last joey (Winter's boy who is in the same cage as Lilo) Luckily he is doing fine, eyes open and getting big and strong at 1 week OOP. Course I have considered moving him and mom into my bra for a month or two.

cry T-I am so sorry for your loss of all your babies that recently went over the Rainbow Bridge. Please try and not blame yourself, it sounds to me and from all that I've read in your posts that your doing a fantastic job with all your little ones. They couldn't ask for a more loving and wonderful mommy.
I'm glad that you will look into the Sub-Q injections and have the items on hand. With all the love and graces of God, may all your new babies be healthy and strong. Many hugs and prayers... hug2

Also, if you have set up trios or quads... rememember they do not always work. If this is the situation.... you may want to reconsider setting up in pairs only. thumb

Not again!!!! Oh, T!! *hugs**

I am so sorry T, this is heartbreaking...

Go back to the Ensure diet if it will make you feel better about all of this, my guys have NEVER had a health problem on it - and you know how healthy they are!

Hugs to you all,
A xx
