HELP MPOM is ignoring OOP Joey - 02/01/08 06:13 AM

O.K. Gang I am the new grandma. Joeys came OOP Jan 30th! Everythign was going good until after 3pm this afternoon! I took the joeys out to show my brother they were out about 4 mins with me. I put them back in and since then i have checked on the whole family every few hours and every time the smallest joey has not been nursing like his slightly bigger brother. Well tonight about a half hour ago i took the father out and left Sassy to her two new ons and the one attaches but she keeps pushing away the smallest boy. he tries to find a way to a teet and she gets up and moves or pushes him away with her feet. So now he is wanding around with no love or teet. Now i tried to force back into pouch but with just myself I don;t really have the means or man power to do it. Now the smallest is very active and all but what can i do to get the mom to except him back? I am making up a batch of emergency joey stuff in case I need to start feeding him. Right now i am going to give them some alone time and check on him against in about an hour... if I see now change should i go ahead and start feeding him myself? I need some fast responce please!

Emergency Instructions for a Rejected Joey
You need to get some food into this joey ASAP so that it doesn't get dehydrated and die.
The best way to do this is with Pedialyte and Esbilac Puppy Formula (if you don't have the rest of the ingredients on hand)... Go to the store and buy them right away. Do NOT delay! Mix them together 50/50 and offer them to the joey with an eyedropper, small pet bottle (made for kittens) or a needleless syringe. Place a drop on the joey's lips and the joey should start to lap it up. Continue placing drops on his lips until he won't take any more. Repeat trying to feed him every 1/2 hour until he is full. (Check his belly as per my webpage to see if he's full.) Once full, you can then start feeding him every 2-4 hours as needed.
You will need to make sure the joey is warm before attempting to feed it. You can do this by heating a fleece blanket in the microwave for about 15-20 seconds. Make sure it is not too hot, then wrap the joey up in it & put the wrapped joey inside your shirt next to your heart. Check him every 5 minutes or so and make sure he is staying warm.

Joey Formula

Mix the following ingredients together until very smooth:

1 Tbsp. Gliderade® (already liquefied with water or Pedialyte® )

1 Tbsp. Brisky’s Booster Milk (-or- Wambaroo® Possum Milk Replacer -or- puppy formula) already liquefied with water or Pedialyte®

1 tsp.* dry baby cereal

*This amount is for a “newborn” joey.

For a Premature joey, eliminate the cereal entirely.

For a 2 - 4 weeks o.o.p. joey, increase the baby cereal to 1 1/2 tsp.

For a 4 - 6 weeks o.o.p. joey, increase the baby cereal to 2 tsp.

For a 6 - 8 weeks o.o.p. joey, increase the baby cereal to 1 Tbsp.

OK i figured it out and i got some awesome news... I did try to feed him... he did take maybe 5 or 6 drops but that was the end of it he did not want no more... And yes he was very nice and warm the whole time he was with me.

Best news was I put him back in with Mom and she welcomed him back with a nice toung bath! I am taking this as a good sign.

I want to thank u all who responded in such a timely manner and excused all my miss typing lol!

I owe u all so much!

You'll probably need to keep feeding him at least every hour then. Make sure the milk replacement is warm. Fill the syring with the milk and put it in a warm cup of water for a few min. Maybe that will help the little guy to eat.

You've already gotten some great advice but I just want to add a little bit to it...
You should try supplement feeding the stronger joey while leaving the weaker joey with the mother. Sometimes, not having the stronger one in the nesting area to interfere will allow the weaker joey to be able to nurse from the mother. You definitely need to try this as the mother's milk will be better for the weaker joey. If it doesn't work, then go back to supplement feeding the weaker joey instead.
If you do have to supplement feed the weaker joey:
At first, try feeding him every hour or so - if you go to feed him and he's nursing from the mother then skip that feeding. As he gains strength, you may find the mother more willing to feed him more often and may be able to cut back on how often you try to feed him.
It is possible that the mother doesn't have enough milk for both joeys. When that happens, she will choose the stronger of the two and will concentrate her attentions on allowing the stronger one to feed (remember biology class and the "Survival of the Fittest" theory). Therefore, it would be a good idea to mix up some of the Booster Milk and add it to the regular offerings of food in the cage at night. It will help her be able to produce more milk for the joeys.

to let u all know the little guy is not doing well... hr was refusing to take the suppliment i offered in many ways... i have been up all night ... he finally took some about 20 mins ago but i can tell by his body he is dehyrating so i am calling my vet cause she opens in 10 mins. i am also taking a print out about the dehydration and taking the stuff for the suppliment feeding... incase the vet will take the joey on for few days... i am dying of no sleep and i live on my own... i hope we make it.

Re: HELP MPOM is ignoring OOP Joey - 02/05/08 06:53 AM

that made me sad to read the whole thread and have it end that way! you did good though smile

what would the reason be for the mother rejecting the joey? could he have been sick and she knew something was wrong with him?

Re: HELP MPOM is ignoring OOP Joey - 02/05/08 10:11 PM

Mother may not have had enough milk to support two joeys.

My suggestion is to purchase one of those digital food scales at WalMart or from a Pharmacy to monitor the remaining joey with to be sure he is gaining weight. A good Digital Scale is about $30.

Babies should gain between 4 and 6 grams per week. If baby begins to loose weight.. then suggest supplemting him two to three times within a 24 hour period for about three weeks or so.

Good Luck with the remainig little one. heart
