Joey Found Half Eaten

Joey Found Half Eaten - 10/26/08 06:53 PM

Last night the most horrible thing happened. I found one of my babies joeys legs eaten still alive. The joey was oop oct 23. I went to check on the baby as usual before I went to bed and when I reached into the pouch to check all I felt was wet and mushy I immediatly pulled it out to see that its legs had been eaten and that it was still alive. Since the baby had been oop I have been sleeping next to the cage to make sure that when mommy and daddy woke up everything went well. The night before mommy would tend to baby when she cried, everything seemed to be normal. I want to know what anyone else would have done in my situation as I feel the choice I made was for the best. I still feel like it was all my fault that there was more I could have done. I havent cried this much in a long time, everyone is telling me that it happens, its life but I still blame myself. I'm sorry that happened to you and the baby. Unfortunally that is the hard part of breeding gliders. frown

Sorry so to hear of the loss of your little one, please don't blame the Mommy or Daddy. We do not know why this sometimes happens, just know in your heart your little one is at peace now.

hug2 hug2 hug2 I am so sorry. Sadly these things do happen. This is the part of the ugly side of breeding everyone is always talking about. It is not your fault, you sound like you have been very attentive to these little ones. My heart is breaking for you. It's hard to understand why they do this, sometimes you just cannot even see it coming hug2 hug2 hug2

It is absolutely not your fault. There are so many things involved with rejection that we don't understand. You cannot blame yourself or the parents. This is just nature. There may very well have been something wrong with the joey and the parents sensed it eventhough you couldn't see it.

I am so very sorry for your loss and what you found. Sending healing thoughts your way. hug2 hug2

I am moving this to Rainbow Memorials.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have not had any babies born here yet so I can't help but it sounds like you did the right thing

There is no update.. I did what I had to do and ended its suffering. Based on my judgement what was left of the joey wasn't enough to keep it alive. Her other joey is doing well I am really scared that she will do the same to this one as she did to the other. If they canibalize one of the joeys does that mean that they will do it to the other?
