My dog killed my glider

My dog killed my glider - 03/21/07 05:26 PM

Somehow my all my gliders got out yesterday. Maybe I didn't close the door good enough?

Anyway. My daughter closed the dog in the glider room for a few minutes yesterday and heard crashing. She went in to find our little Apple in the dogs mouth and all the gliders running around. Apple seemed okay for few hours but went downhill quickly.

She died inside my bra around 1 am last night.

We all feel so horrible.

Re: My dog killed my glider - 03/21/07 05:35 PM

I learned how quickly something like that can happen, even when we think we've covered all our tracks with cage doors, latches, etc. Believe me, I feel your pain. I've been there, not with one of my gliders, but with another pet once. It was the most horrible thing in the world. I am so sorry for your loss. Try not to beat yourself up too much, I've also been reminded that normally our houses hold a bunch of predators and a bunch of prey, and when left alone, natural instincts kick in like mad and it's a matter of them figuring out which one is which. I'm so sorry. I will keep you and your family in my prayers. *HUGZ*

Re: My dog killed my glider - 03/21/07 05:52 PM

I'm so sorry for your loss and hope the other gliders all are safe.

Not to scare you but now that your dog has had a glider in his or hers mouth please keep the dog away from your gliders from here on out. Once a dog has a taste of any animal they will desire this taste and wil ltry to get your other gliders.

I have personally seen this many times over growing up on a farm and rasing livestock of all kinds and having dogs as well. So Please no matter at this point how much you think you know your dog it will try to get to the others. So for your Gliders safety never let the dog near them from this point on. Not even under guidance the dog will always be quicker than you.

I'm sorry again for your loss and I only tell you this to prevent loosing anymore.

Re: My dog killed my glider - 03/21/07 05:58 PM

I know what you are saying. We didn't mean for the gliders and dog to be in the same room. I wasn't home and my 10 year-old put the dog in the room because she had to for a few minutes. We had no idea they were out of the cage.

But yeah, I know what you are saying.

Honestly, I'm starting to wonder if I should keep them.

Re: My dog killed my glider - 03/21/07 06:13 PM

I dont know about the past. But dont let this event keep you from the gliders. I know i dont even have a glider yet and i am already fearing the day she dies (hopefully a decade plus away)

Re: My dog killed my glider - 03/21/07 06:14 PM

Keeping them shouldn't be a problem unless you feel there's a chance the dog can get to them at any time. If you can keep the dog away on a perm basis there should be no issues. My prayers go out to you and your family.

Re: My dog killed my glider - 03/21/07 06:35 PM

Stacey - don't let yourself get too freaked out and start second guessing your ability to care for them. Give it some time, think it out. The first suggestion I thought of was do you have a closet that you could keep them in? Carmella's cage is in a closet in our spare room (pffft who am I kidding it's HER room now!) and we originally put her in there so she can have darkness during the day. It also keeps the smell down and now a days I like the thought of her being in there b/c I keep the door closed whenever we're not home so even if she DOES get out she's just in the closet. I don't have other pets but it seems like maybe a setup like this would help you feel like they were safer??

:hugs: I'm so sorry I just lost my Tony yesterday and I know how hard it can be...

cry I am SO sorry for your loss. This is one of my biggest fears with my little ones. I already know that this will be thier fate if they run across the dog someday. He doesn't like the sounds they make and his instinct is to kill rats. shakehead

Thank you so much everyone. It really is comforting. We know it isn't Mika's fault. It's hard not to be mad at the dog, but we know he was just being a dog.

We picked up a pretty box and a pot of pansies. We will bury her in a few.

Thanks again guys.

I am very sorry for your loss! I had a cat that got in my room when I was younger and killed my teddybear hamster, I was devasted! It happens though, you learn from it, and you go on. Your other gliders need you to, and thankfully you have them smile Don't give up now!

Re: My dog killed my glider - 03/22/07 04:53 AM

I'm sorry for your loss as well. Just give it some time and I think you'll feel your confidence return about keeping gliders. I went through the same thing when Jeepers died last summer. At that time, I just knew I would never get another glider and would just keep Peepers as long as God decided to give us. But of course Peeps needed a buddy so I got her one and well, life goes on. dunno

I guess what I'm saying is just "hang in there".

I'm so sorry for your loss, it's so hard to have a beloved pet pass away, but when it's a tragic death it's so much harder. cry

Please be really careful with letting your dog even near the glider cages from this point on. My dog has learned how to open up bedroom doors by working the doorknobs until they wiggle loose. I had another dog that could open up any gate we tried to enclose her in, even if we put a rope or wire tie through the lock. It had to be actually locked with a combination lock or a key lock to keep her inside. Dogs love to chew, and I don't imagine it would take very long for one to get into a glider cage if it really wanted to. frown

Your poor daughter! She must be so traumatized by it all. cry

Re: My dog killed my glider - 03/22/07 10:52 AM

Oh, how sad!! I am so sorry! I know I've come close to this same fear when my Mowgli opened his cage on his own and went exploring. Thankfully he jumped up on top of the curtains and stayed up there until I came home from work. I've made sure it won't happen again, but sometimes these accidents just happen. frown

My prayers go out to you right now. I am sorry for loss.

Re: My dog killed my glider - 03/23/07 06:19 PM

Thank you again for all the nice comments. I really do appreciate it.

I decided to give my gliders to a new home. I had been talking with the woman for over a month about her maybe taking 2 of them. I kind of needed to downsize as we are in a rental until our house sells......

Anyway, my heart just isn't in it anymore and they are in a new, very good home. If things don't work out for her she knows I'll take them back......

I'm pretty sad right now.

Oh my gosh, I know that his was posted awhile ago but I just want to let you know that we are all still thinking and praing for Glider that past away. I am truly sorry and if I ever had a Glider that died, I would feel so awful and I am so sorry that this situation had to happen to you! OMG! I feel so bad for you, what did you do to your dog afterward, did you blame it on him, I am not sure if it was his fault, well just have a nice day and rest.....mlove

Stacey, I'm so sorry for your loss of little Apple, and now, all of your wee ones. hug2 It must've been a terribly hard decision to make to give them up.

Please, there is no blame. Accidents do happen. Hopefully your post will help remind others how serious (and tragic) certain combinations of pets can be. frown

Re: My dog killed my glider - 04/06/07 11:37 AM

Even if a dog/cat/etc. is friends with a glider, serious injuries can occur just from ordinary play.

We try to keep our gliders isolated just in case.

Our older cat ignores them, the younger cat kept her claws
in after they launched onto her back and 'tasted' her ear
and tail.

But animals, small children and inanimate objects like vacuum
cleaners and toilets don't have to be hungry or malicious to
do damage.

Just normal activity can lead to tragic results.

The same could happen if a glider got hold of a bird or
other 'pocket pet'.

Dichroic,my heart goes out to you, your daughter and all
your loved ones in this time of loss.

Your grief is as understandable as it is painful.

I hope the anger and agony fade quickly so all concerned can
heal and support one another.

You won't be betraying Apple by reconciling with the dog.

Whatever brought on the attack,I'm sure it ocurred without realization of the damage that would result.

Your dog may have wished it could take that moment back and make your family whole again.

We can't alter the past.

All we can do is learn and move ahead in love.
