It looks as though I may have messed up and could use a little help. I ran across a post on Facebook with a lady saying that she had a few gliders and wanted to downgrade a bit. I purchased a mother and daughter (1.5 years and 2.5 months old). They are very sweet and already getting used to us as a new family. I was contacted by the lady tonight stating that a game warden contacted her and informed her that without proper paperwork he would have to confiscate all of the gliders (my 2 included). Obviously this is why you buy from licensed breeders but I let my guard down being this wasn't really a breeding situation. It was just a lady that had a couple gliders and happened to have joeys. Guess my new gliders will end up being put down because I don't have a simple piece of paper. It doesn't matter how well of a home they would have had. All that matters is a piece if paper. (Sorry to rant but I am slightly annoyed by this whole ordeal although it is my own fault).

Please keep us updated. This would be the first case in GA where any gliders have been confiscated.
Are they kept in bad condioontions? That's the only way I can imagine authorities stepping in if it's a neglect or hoarding case.

Find out the name of the senator that helped get sugar gliders made legal and send him a letter. Lay it out about rehomeing gliders.

You could also get in touch with a rescue that has a USDA license and see if you could relinquish your gliders, then readopt them with the appropriate paperwork.

You may have to donate to the rescue, but what the hay.

This is a troubling story, I hope it ends well. Fight with everything you got to keep your new babies, well at least try everything you can. Please keep us posted. I'll pray for the authorities to have compassion on the gliders you have homed, seeing they have a new wonderful home. And I wish you the best of luck as well.

Well I woke up to some hopeful news this morning. The lady informed me that she pulled a few strings and is being allowed to try and get her license before we have to give them up. It helps when you know the right people. As for the idea of giving them to a rescue group and them adopting them back... That is brilliant and the reason I asked y'all. Lol.

Hi Hatchet,
Something is a little off on the verbiage and not sure if the lady that is talking to you is confused or being misinformed or what. I hope that I can help you with the info below.

Game Wardens work for Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The animals that DNR is responsible for are wildlife. Gliders are not considered wildlife. DNR also licenses for Fishing and Hunting licenses, bird licensing, outdoor licenses, sportsman, and wildlife management licensing and permits. None of the licenses are related to sugar gliders.

The Ga Dept of Agriculture is responsible for the licensing and "management" of breeders in GA in addition to maintaining and enforcing regulatory compliance and attending to and addressing matters of investigation of cruelty, neglect, and overall misuse and noncompliance with animals and our Animal Protect act codes.

The GA law states that it is illegal to own a sugar glider unless you have proof that the glider was produced in a USDA facility. This is true. Rachel is also correct in that there has yet to be a case (in our knowledge) where the DoA for GA has been so aggressive to remove/confiscate a glider based on this part of the law. The challenging and confusing part about GA law is the imposition of USDA awareness and documentation. If I can help you with more information on this, please feel free to reach out to me.

With all of that said - I want you to retain and use the following:

1) Game wardens would not confiscate your gliders unless under the direction or in concert with a DoA or USDA affiliate.

2) Any question of compliance would be from a local Dept of Agriculture associate in GA or a USDA (APHIS) associate.

3) Contact your local Dept of Ag in GA and also the regional APHIS USDA office and ask the question - "If I choose to adopt a sugar glider from a person that may or may not have purchased their gliders from a USDA facility - but I do NOT have proof either way, what happens?" Or just flat out - "What happens if I adopt a glider from CL and have no proof of USDA licensed origin?" And please also follow up either question with "Have you, do you, or will you confiscate sugar gliders? If so, under what terms do you do so?"

4) ALWAYS get your information from the source. DO NOT trust others to interpret a very convoluted law for you - even the breeder. Unfortunately, the rules in GA are clear as mud. Be your gliders advocate and go to the source.

I hope that helps! It sounds like you really love gliders and just want to help out. It's unfortunate that something like this is getting in the way of a good deed. I certainly hope it works out in the end and do keep us updated!

Thanks Bogey. When I try to do research of the actual laws it looks like Greek and gives me a headache. I will have to go back through the messages and reread exactly who she was contacted by about the confiscation of the gliders. I understand that we should not be allowed to keep any and every animal as a pet but gliders are just too darn cute. I mean really, other than babies, how many other things can make a grown man use the word "cute".
