Sugar gliders are very vocal creatures making a wide variety of sounds. Some of these sounds include "crabbing", "barking", "chattering", "hissing", "chirping" and "sneezing" as well as others which are harder to describe. What do they sound like and what do the noises mean?
Crabbing
This is usually the first sound you hear a glider make. It means he is frightened or angry and is trying to make himself sound scary so you will leave him alone. (Its quite effective.)
Barking
Sugar gliders will bark very much like a little puppy when they want attention. Gliders also bark for other reasons besides attention, they possibly use it to locate other gliders in the dark and some say its a form of storytelling.
Chattering
Gliders chatter when they are excited or very happy about something. It is usually heard when they see you and want attention or is sometimes made after a hiss as a communication of friendliness.
Hissing
Hissing usually occurs when gliders encounter one another. It is probably used
as a greeting or as a question of the other's intent. It can sometimes be accompanied
by a semi-circular dance around the object in question.
