I was wondering, at what age do you retire your female breeders. My oldest female will be 5 years OOP in March. She has had 7 pregnancies, not all successful, but half. She is expecting again. She's just a little breeder. I wonder though about her. At what point should we neuter her mate. Is she getting too old or tired to breed? Any help would be appreciated. We are small-time licensed breeders, and we have gotten to the point that we won't even sell our joeys. I'm going to let my license go. I don't want to sell them after I've hand raised them. We have some very sweet gliders. All of our gliders are pets, so I want to take care of Andi's mate, when it's time. If it's okay for her to continue breeding, than it's fine with us because she was our very first joey, and we love keeping her offspring. We just want what's best for Andi. Thanks.

I think it all depends on the glider. I have a 4 year old female that is getting 1 last chance to breed, if it's not successful, she will be retired this year. She's had a lot of trouble producing milk in the past and I've had to suppliment most of her joeys. On the other hand, there is Bourbon's Baybee, who is 11 years old and still going strong. She produced srlb's little Baybox (sp) last year...

Hey you sound like me. We have 14 and they are all pets. I have a female that is 4 and she has had 7-8 sets of joeys. She always has 2. I have been thinking the same thing but they are both such great parents. We have never lost a joey from them. I feel that maybe she will let me know when enought is enough. Usually he waits till the babies are weaned and out of cage with them before breeding back but he didn't wait this time. She has 2 more in pouch and the girls are 5 weeks old I think the new joeys will be here in 4-5 weeks. I don't mean to ramble but maybe she will let you know. If she looks run down or is maybe crabby all the time. I just feel that Isabell will let me know she realy enjoys her babies and raising them right now. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/muchlove.gif" alt="" />

[:"green"]From what I understand, female gliders will naturally go through menopause between 8 - 10 years old normally (actual age varies just like with humans). My oldest female just stopped breeding after her last joey came o.o.p. almost 2 years ago and has never gotten pregnant again since (although they still tango on a regular basis).
However, since yours is having such difficulty with keeping her joeys, I wonder how much stress she is under from the process. What seems to be the difficulty? Do you know? I had two females who absolutely would not take care of their joeys once they came o.o.p. I finally separated them from their male because it was so stressful on me to continually lose 50% of their joeys.
Ultimately, the decision about whether to neuter the male is yours... you are the one who knows your gliders best...

I'm not sure what Andi's difficulty is, but I would imagine it's her milk supply, or nutrition of some sort. She's an excellent mom, and seems to enjoy being pregnant, if that makes sense. When she has a single, it always makes it, but when twins are involved, she has problems. I've never been successful with supplimenting, even tho I have all the right stuff (the syringe, catheter, milk replacement, even a heater and container plastic cage for when the joey is completely rejected). She's in a cage with her mate and another neutered male (the mates father). She almost always has a joey or two in the pouch, and it doesn't seem to bother her at all. I just don't want to cause her undue stress. She loves her wheel. A couple of years ago her first mate died, and she was so depressed. Her ears stayed down and she wouldn't run in the wheel. As soon as we introduced her to Rooney, she started running again (even tho they weren't in the same cage yet). Between the wheel, and her interest in Rooney (and his in her), we knew we had a good match. However, Rooney had been raised with his dad. So, we had dad neutered, and a couple of weeks later, the 3 were a happy little colony. My only concern is whether or not to neuter Rooney. When the time comes, we will do it, but I was just wondering if so many pregnancies is harmful to our Andi. We want to be sure she is happy and healthy. She has regular wellness checks with our vet, and she's fine (but VERY petite). Thanks.
