When I went in the glider room just a minute ago to give Rocky a cricket the right side of his neck is swollen and hard.
I did not notice this last night. He acts fine. Cora

Hi Cora,

Any kind of swelling or lump should get vet attention as soon as you can. It could be a number of things: bug/spider bite, a bite from another gliders etc.

Gliders have adapted to not showing any signs of stress or illness as a survival tool so just because he might 'seem' fine doesn't mean something more serious is going on.

Please keep us updated on him..

My vet does have some openings today................the drive is long. I am going into work to see whats going on, tell them Rockys situation (everyone loves Rocky there at the Nursing Home) and get to the vet this afternoon. My exotic vet is Dr. Reese in Whitehouse, Texas. Rocky is just over 1 year oop and very bonded to me................if anything happens to him..........................The hole in my heart would be large.

I would agree with getting him in asap. Anything visible like that needs attention quickly. As well as a bite, it could also be an abscess or infection pocket in there..your vet might want to try and get a sample of any fluid that might be in there to culture as well, which will help target meds, and possibly relieve some of the pressure, depending on what is causing it. Please update as soon as you can.

OK *breathes*. The vet aspirated the growth. The cytology report indicated no cancer cells (but Dr. Reese said thats not always accurate) . He is treating it like an infection with SMZ TMP suspension twice a day and benebac gel ( for the gut bacteria while on antibiotic therapy). He says if it does not start going down he may have to remove it which is risky mosly because of the anasthesia for gliders (calculating it accurately). Our next appt. is next thursday @ 2:30 CST.

Rocky is so tame ...no crabbing biting or anything through it all. The vet could not believe it. He also commented on healthy he looked.............................Cora

I will try to get a pic of it later..........................Cora

Cora, you can call us anytime, day/night, if you need to. That's what we're here for.

Like we said, it's extremely unlikely this is cancer...which usually takes a lot longer to form, and at that size would likely show on a cytology. This could be a bug bite, time will tell if the swelling goes down. You could try some children's benadryl... ask vet for dosage amt...and see if it helps with swelling. If a bug bite, it is an antihistamine, and should help, but won't hurt him if it's not.

Another very possible scenario, is one of his teeth...with the involvement of the neck, I would think a back tooth, either upper or lower jaw, could be either abscessed, or bacteria got in thru a scratch in the jaw, and this spread into the neck..building until it was noticeable. It could be any side tooth, but with neck involvement it's more likely it's farther back. The vet might or might not be able to see anything, but it's worth a look.

Regardless..you want him on meds at LEAST 3 or 4 days longer than there is symptoms...if ANY swelling remains, extend the course of meds. If you don't see any improvement in the next 24 to 48 hours, get him back in...sooner if it gets any worse. You could suggest to the vet a broader spectrum antibiotic like Baytril or Clavamox at that time, since TMP/SFX is a narrower spectrum and not as effective against as broad a range of bugs.

Here's the hug you asked for - we know how scary this is for you. And remember you are welcome to call any time you need to.

Oh Cora,
I'm sorry the lump seems to be getting bigger.. but try to stay strong (I know that has to be hard to do right now ).

Now that there is swelling around his throat have you noticed how he is breathing?? Does it seem to be affecting him that way?
Do you have an emergency vet phone number you can call? Can you take him to an emergency vet?
Sending you hugs...

I would get him to a vet asap. You say
Quote:

but now it is a little bigger......even his throat is firm and slightly swollen like the lump.

This could restrict his breathing, also the increase swelling may be a reaction to the meds causing anaphylaxis. You have Jen's number, she is very knowledgeable with abscess.

I'm sorry Cora, I ran to get my boys some dinner. Get him into a 24 hour vet..print what I typed before, and take this one as well.

Since nothing was found, and he is now on meds...they will mess up test results if a bacteria. vet may need to shotgun...If he were mine, I would go with a stronger broad spectrum antiabiotic...either Clavamox or Clindamycin IN COMBINATION with Metronidazole...AND an anti-inflammatory of some kind. Ask for syringes if you don't have many, in case you have to force food/fluids. Ensure is easy to syringe feed-any flavor but chocolate. Have vet check for dehydration as well, and sub-q if necessary. I have a vet that will consult at this time of day if you need it...Dr. Emch or Dr. Matheson at Pet ER...801-277-9369, and my name is Jen Bailey...I believe the account there is under my husband's name..Ray Bailey. Find any vet willing to see him and take this with you. My cell if I'm ever not here is 435-640-9438

Hey guys you are amazingly supportive.........thank you. Rocky took his meds without swollowing diff. he has no trouble breathing and is currently munching on an apple in the bonding pouch. He has had 3 doses of the antibiotic if he was going to go into anaphylactic shock from allergy to the med it would have already happened. Jen really is leaning towards a spider bite. I will keep you all posted.

I am, because it is hardening, and spreading, so quickly. It is acting like a histamine reaction. A cyst or tumor takes time, and abcesses normally have enough fluid for a culture. This does not. Infection is possible...but usually wouldn't characterize itself this way, or visibly grow so fast..although it is possible, and could be diffused through the tissue, rather than fluid filled...i would put that lower on the list. A very unlikely thing, is that something got lodged, such as a small splinter of something, either from the outside, or in the throat, to cause this. Extremely unlikely, but not outside the realm of possibility. Benadryl may not be either strong enough, or targeted enough. A corticosteroid, such as prednisone, might be called for to slow/stop the swelling-If it is a bite..did it get him from the outside, or did he eat the thing, and it got him? A vet could maybe determine that. I'm not one, so this is my best guess based on experience. Hopefully someone will be willing to see him, and find out what is going on. Since it is still swelling, the meds he's on aren't doing the job...and the throat isn't somewhere you want it to keep going. Keep us updated on the little trooper, Cora.

Cora,
You mentioned the veterinarian aspirated the swelling. That sounded like was fluid was removed. Although you mentioned no evidence of cancer in cytology review, you did not indicate what the fluid analysis otherwise showed. Exudate, pus, gram stain, culture?... surely some tests were run on it. Any follow-up?

Rocky is no worse...................but no better as far as the swelling goes. He still acts normal. Dr, Reese said most likely the swelling to his neck area is from the needle stick.........causing seepage to that tissue. The entire area is moveable.......meanig if I touch the neck area where the swelling stops the whole area moves. He is not scratching at it or even acknowledging he has a problem. If this is not making much sense its cause I have been up and down all night checking on my cuteness...........and Im a little tired.
schlep the cytology report indicated WBC count was elevated. ....................Cora

You didn't mention gram stain results, which would usually be done. Sometimes that helps your doc decide which antibiotic to choose.

If WBC's were present, it is hard to support any other diagnosis than infection being present (abscess). Even a fluid cyst or cystic hygroma or any other original cause of the fluid that now has WBC's has likely become secondarily infected. If that fluid collection or a boggy feeling is still present, then so is the germ and infection most likely. It is almost impossible to clear an abscess with an oral antibiotic without aggressive drainage to de-bulk the infection. One just can't get adequate antibiotic levels in such a fluid space.

If the swelling persists and your veterinarian wants to needle it or open it with a tiny incision and drain it, I would let him/her do it. Without doing so, it is not likely to heal, or if it does it is a much longer process with risk of infection spreading and causing other complications.

Good luck.

Thanks, Schlep. That was my first thougt, but then the vet couldn't get much fluid out with the needle. I always feel better when you get in here, let me tell you. With all the spiders around lately, that was really possible. Could this have diffusion in there as well, with a small center? Would that require a tube or something while the fluid works it way out of the tissue, or the vet to continue reopening it/keeping it open for it to drain? Sorry, just trying to learn, and concerned for the little guy. With white blood cells, infection is definitely there..do you think the meds would work better in combination with drainage, and that's why it's still getting bigger...or if meds need changed in addition?

I don't think it should be massaged and I asked Bruce and he agrees. It could spread or irritate whatever is going on. As far as the warm compresses if it's a cystic hygrona it could make it worse.

Please keep us posted.

Not to worry. We are all here to learn and help folks. It just means you care. If there is some advice that may not be just right someone will catch it. I just go back to my nursing days and what we did and I just happen to have a DR. at home lol.

Schlep don't go away. Bruce was so glad to see you post and what you posted.

Cora,
First off, let me send you my deepest sympathy during your time of stress, and admiration for addressing it so responsibly.
You mentioned how bonded Much Rocky is to you and how he didn't crab or aything at the vet's; I'm so envious and also hopeful that everything turns out ok. I've had my gliders about 2 weeks, and I was wondering how long it took you to reach such a great realtionship with Rocky? It sounds like what I am hoping for with my girls...

I don't know if an experience of mine is anything similar or not but @ 6 years ago I discovered a "lump" on my Bobbie Girls chest that seemed to have appeared over night. We rushed to the vets & ended up having it surgically removed & tested. It turned out that it was just fatty tissue and Bobbie recovered quickly from her surgery. I'm hoping & praying that Rocky's lump is something as innocuous as Bobbie's was. (((((HUGS)))))

We can hope it is, but white blood cells mean the immune system is reacting to an invader of some kind to fight it. I hope at least it isn't getting any bigger.

Cora, I got home from the vet, and there was a call from you on the machine. Call back any time...I'm sorry I wasn't here, and don't want to wake you at 3 am (I think 4 your time).

How's the little guy doing now?

Those are nice pictures. Rocky certainly looks bright-eyed and healthy.

I would agree I would not massage an infected fluid collection for fear of spreading it out into other tissue planes. If a drainage tract was present and one could very gently express the fluid and pus to the outside, I would. But I wouldn't try to put the fluid under much pressure.

A fatty tumor under the skin can happen. Overfed dogs get them easily, (as do old men.) But that wouldn't feel boggy and deformable like fluid does (think water balloon). They tend to be hard - almost rubbery. And as mentioned above, they shouldn't be infiltrated with white cells.

Although he looks healthy, that mass isn't normal. Without getting some of it, it is hard to make a specific and correct diagnosis. Without an accurate diagnosis, one can't pick a proper treatment plan that would be expected to work.

Obviously the plan and decisions are up to you and your veterinarian. If he were mine, I'd go get it. As long as they are in there, take it all if it is solid tissue. If fluid, drain and culture. The good news that is that it is in an area hard to get to chew on, no E-collar needed. Nails and scratching could pose a problem while healing. In this specific situation, if it were causing him discomfort, the Neosporin with numbing activity might be helpful. I see little risk and would personally use it.

Good luck.

Hey Cora
You might want to take schlep's post with you and see what the vet thinks along those lines as well. At least it isn't getting any worse. If there is fluid inside, a culture might be valuable as well, even though it takes a few days for results, so if there are bacteria, you can find out exactly what kind and how to target it...let us know what he says.

Hugs hugs and more hugs to you and Rocky. It does remind me looking at his pictures of a spider bite I got years ago. It took MONTHS for it to go away and alot of antibiotics. I wish you lots of luck and am sending prayers out to you and Rocky. Please keep us posted!

I could have swore I replied to this yesterday...but I've lost a couple posts now, the last few days, lol, so not much surprises me at this point. Keep us updated and let us know how it goes at the vet. At least you won't have to worry about an ecollar...but you'll have to watch he doesn't scratch it too much and tear it open. Thanks for the update.

Everyone always seems to want to separate cage mates at surgery. I'm not so sure there wouldn't be less stress leaving them together. I would be surprised if a buddy bothered a surgical wound. I would worry more about self-mutilation from the patient. If it goes OK during an initial observation period, I'd leave them together.

Well I have him back home. The front neck area is open and there are a couple stitches on the right side of his neck. Overgrooming will certainly be an issue and that is why I have chosen not to put him back in with his mate at this time. The large tumor was removed. Dr. Reese said it was encapsulated and not branching out everywhere which indicates it may be benign however the histopathology was sent off and the results should be in next week. They had to give him some anasthetic recovery to pull him out of anesthesia. I have pain meds, antibiotics and benebac to give. The cost was 324.99.............................who can put a price on love??????? You cant!!!!!......................Cora

Cora, thanks for keeping us updated. We're rooting for Rocky's speedy and complete recovery, and that the tumor is indeed benign.

Rocky is doing really well. He and Foamy are back together in the same pouch (I only seperated them for a few days). The lab results should be in wed. or thurs. The vet will remove his stitches mon. afternoon................Thanks again for your prayers and suggestions and well wishes..................Cora

My prayers go out to you and Rocky. Here is the email of a member that has dealt with cancer in gliders. Maybe she can give you some help and insight. Darcy's diet came about for one of her sick gliders. Good luck and lots of hugs []saharanfox@hotmail.com[/]

Carrie T thanks so much for that email addy. She has a glider diagnosed with Hodgekins Lymphoma in 2002. That gives me a little hope. But I know each case is prob. different. How common is this in gliders ........anyone know????
Thank you everyone for your well wishes and prayers..........it means alot to Rocky and I. Cora

I certainly wish your 'Rocky' the very best!

I will need to look thru a few books

Neoplasia especially lymphoid neoplasia (50% of reported neoplasms)is relatively common in captive gliders - from what I see this includes captive squirrel glider's, Greater glider's & sugar gliders.

An article that was sent to me from Australia, several years back (1991 - I believe)
'Cutaneous lymphosarcoma in a sugar glider'
(but this case was unusual)

Do contact saharanfox as well... her glider Lord Darcy (who Darcy's diet with the Ensure was named for) is currently in remission with Lymphoma-has had it for a few years, but is still going. She is the only one I know of (there could be others, I just don't know of them) who has dealt with this, and done so long term. She would have quite a bit of experience with treatment options, daily care, diet, etc. Keep us updated on the little guy!

If Lord Darcy should ever require a little extra info/help, I have contact with some excellent vet sources - from the Land Down Under who may be able to assist Saharanfox or her vet

Yes I know of her diet & she probably knows of my PML (lol)

Pockets-you sent me some excellent info as well for Riker...I'm sure you and your vets could offer some valuable resources. I seem yo have skipped reading a post there last night, lol, you'd already gotten that, so just disregard. I'm not able to offer much when it comes to a disease like this, tho I wish I could.

Since last night Rocky seems to have developed HLP symptoms. It is clear both of his back legs are paralyzed and feet are curled up. Just since last night!!!! He ate a tablespoon of diluted BML and about 8 mealies earlier. I have contacted the vet and cried and cried. My goal is to keep Rocky as comfortable as possible. I do not think he is hurting but I have pain meds on hand if need be. He is not dehydrated............I did the tent test. I am just letting yall know how he is..................an update.

I am so sorry, I wish I had better words but I know there really aren't any words of comfort when one of your kids is so sick. Just know that there are many people thinking of both of you.

Sometimes just loving them is the best thing you can do. If he leaves for the Bridge...he will know how much you cared and remember you. Know we are here for you, and you did your best for him.

Thank you guys so much for your support and prayers. Rocky ate some mealies this morning...............condition unchanged. He and Foamy have been snuggled in the pouch together. I work around the death and dying and he has that destinct smell of death. He does not seem to be in any discomfort. This is just not fair we were supposed to have years together noy just 1 year. But what a good year it was. His eye is on the sparrow........................

A long time ago, our cat was to the point that we had to put him to sleep. Mom always visited him at the vet and put in my dad's slippers that he loved chewing up. The vet was amazed that he survived and he said the only medicine that probably did the job was love. To love on him is all he needs. I'm praying for you both.
