I am so heart broken. I just went to go check on everyone and Fiona's baby has been cannibalized. She is one of the 6 rescues that I took in and her and another female were pregnant and their babies (one each)were due out any day now. I just saw the baby moving around like crazy last night before I went to bed. I had seen little hands and everything. I seperated everyone into pairs and adopted out the other four. I kept the two pregnant girls and they are housed together. I have been feeding them Judie's BML with Wombaroo and Wombaroo HP sprinkled on their fruit and veggies plus extra mealworms every day. I haven't had any problems with this girl and she is healthy, eats well, has normal bowel movements, etc.

Did this happen because I separated the girls from the father(s)? I didn't want anymore breeding going on because they were rescues and I didn't know who mated with who as there were 3 boys in there.

Should I separate the girls so the other joey doesn't get cannibalized? I don't know who ate it, but there were small bits of bone or cartilage in the pouch that both of them were in.

I am so sorry <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> There are so many reasons why a momma will eat her baby. It could of been momma because of stress or because she knew the joey would not be normal. It could of been the other girl, but usually if there is joey stealing it happens with in the first month the joey drops ip.

You did all the right things... don't beat your self up. It hurts, but don't blame your self. I would keep the girls together because she (the one who has the joey ip) needs someone to help her. Again if their was going to be joey stealing it usually happens with in the first month of the joey dropping ip.

Thank you Elisabeth. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> You made me feel better. After reading other stories about this, I just never imagined that it could hurt this bad when I only got to touch it from the outside and I didn't even know what it looked like.
I'll definitely keep the girls together and try to stop the "what if I's" and pray that the other baby comes out happy and healthy.
