My Comet's histopath results list this as his cause of death. The yeast attacked his gallbladder & liver.

Anyone ever have yeast show up in a male glider? His mate Haley has never had a pouch infection and has no signs of currently having one.

There were no signs of him having this yeast infection. From my search, I've only seen yeast show up in females & it's a pouch infection.

Just wondering if anyone else has ever heard or seen candida yeast in gliders other than a pouch infection.

I am sorry, I too have not heard of it in males. Did you ask your vet about this?

was he ever on antibiotics?

So sorry. Never heard of this, which I'm sure doesn't help your healing process with added questions and very little answers.

The vet is baffled with this- he's never seen it in sugar gliders but others have with pouch infections. He's never been on antibiotics.

If this yeast is not common to be in a sugar gliders gut like ours, he's thinking he picked up the yeast from me somehow since we do naturally carry it in our systems.

Oh Wow! do we feed anything with yeast in it?

I'm going to look into me personally, since this is something we carry. I could have abnormal levels and could have/be passing it to my gliders.

I know in humans, males and females can pass it back and forth if it isn't cured in both. I'd be very interested in learning more about this!

If you had high levels wouldn't you know? (i.e. yeast infections, thrush, etc...)

If we carry it doesnt it lay dormant unless you have an infection?

I guess I am asking how would you transfer it to a glider?

Those are many of the same questions I've been wondering. I haven't suffered from a female infection in years but there are other symptoms of abnormal yeast levels. It is naturally in our systems and our body keeps it at natural levels unless one has a compromised immune system, which I don't think I do.

How it would go from me to Comet- I have no idea. Comet's histopath shows no other organ damage from illness's - just the yeast and damage it did to his liver/gallbladder.

The vet says I have nothing to worry about but it's hard not to grasp at straws. I just wish there was a simple answer to how Comet got this yeast & it getting out of control.

That is just so bizarre. How on earth could he have picked that up? I agree that it's scary when something like this happens and you feel completely helpless to have avoided it or even treat it.

I don't think its the yeast in food that causes this. (Thats a bakers yeast or brewers yeast)

In a human it can be caused by increase in sugar. (Diabetics are prone to yeast infections)

In Dogs, its the moisture that cause yeast infections in their ears.

I am wondering if the bi product in the liver and gallbladder in a glider is yeast and it either got out of control or the organs stopped working causing it to produce...

(just thinking out loud here....)

What species of yeast was it? How long after death was the necropsy performed?

Yeast infection in those organs is nearly impossible but you can never say never.

Candida overgrowth/infection in humans does NOT always manifest as a visible or noticeable yeast infection. In fact, it can very easily go undiagnosed for years. I have battled systemic candida (of the bloodstream) for 15+ years. It is recurrent and is known to flare and then subside with treatment. The most obvious symptoms in humans of systemic candida infection/overgrowth are fatigue, depression and a strong craving for bread products, not thrush or vaginal yeast infection. It also causes or exacerbates joint inflammation.

I say all of this to say that it is very possible that you have it and don't know until it is very severe. It is also possible for ANYONE (Male or female) to get it.

Exactly! That's the mil dollar question!

The Candida family. Comet was anesthetize on 10/17 and his necropsy was started on 10/19. This did not happen during storage or delivery of his body. It was evident he was in liver failure hence the letting him go. His body was sent intact to Texas A&M where they did the necropsy and histopath. From first site, his gallbladder & liver were destroyed.

Thanks for the information Val- that's a lot of what I've been reading. It's evident how the yeast infection can be passed in humans but giving it to Comet(if that's the case) I'm still baffled with.

I'm wondering if Comet had this, is there any way to test my other gliders to see if they are carrying it as well.

Sorry there hasn't been. I forwarded the histopath results to Dr Tristan but haven't heard any comments back on it.

I haven't had a chance to have myself tested for any problems with yeast yet.
