When I got home yesterday from the Christmas gathering I did a quick head check then later that when feeding around 9p I did a longer check on my gliders and found that one of my 6 month old joeys had a broken tail. Hubby had been running home to feed and care for gliders over the weekend and he said that there were no injuries on Saturday when he had come home to feed at 8p. So sometime over night Chuckles' tail got caught in his wodent wheel. I have the pvc safety guard on my wheels and have never had this happen before and of course on Sunday night there are no vets open so needless to say I paniced and was on the phone with Bourbon. With her help I got him stableized to make it thru the night and settled into a hospital cage by my bed for the night. Thank goodness Chuckles didn't attack his tail over Saturday night and make the injury worse then it already was. I didn't get much sleep last night and I'm up early checking on Chuckles. He's doing okay this morning, thank goodness he didn't mess with his tail again last night so I'm off to the vet in Quincy, IL today. Pray for Chuckles as it looks like he'll have to have about 1 and a half inches of his tail amputated today. This is how he looks this morning. This is his tail.

Oh Elena! I'm so sorry! Thank goodness he didn't SM! I had a rescue (Riley) brought to me the same way. Surgery was as smooth as glass and he healed quickly.

Oh no!!!! Poor Chuckles! I'm glad you checked everyone over and saw the injury quickly. I bet he will be right as rain in a few days, let me know if I can help. For new glider owners - this is a perfect example of why Wodent wheels are not the best thing in your cage. I've seen Elena's facility, and her wheels and they are clean, but this little boy's tail still got stuck. If you can afford a better wheel, by all means, get one!

Elena, I'm so sorry about Chuckles tail! Folks...wodent wheels are NOT SAFE FOR GLIDERS. Chuckles was LUCKY that his tail is ONLY broken. Wodent wheels, EVEN WITH THE GUARD in place have DEGLOVED glider's tails. They have ripped tails OFF gliders and they have caused the DEATH of gliders. They are NOT SAFE!

Poor little man! I'm glad you were a good mommy and checked on him! I hope his recovery goes smooth and very fast. Keep us updated on how he's doing! As for those wheels.....I have one of them but I don't let my gliders use it anymore because my Stewie almost got hurt on it. I am trying to decide on what wheel to get now. I did have the wodent wheel in my glider playroom for supervised play with it, but I no longer feel safe letting them use it even when I'm watching closely. Watching them while they use the wodent wheel will NOT prevent an accident. I sat there and watched as my baby almost got hurt! I got lucky that time. I'm not going to risk it again. Any suggestions on which wheel to get would be wonderful. I would like one that is safe, quiet, and not super hard to clean. I know there are a few different wheels out there. Which one is the best?

Chuckles came through surgery well and is in a shotglass e-collar. We managed to get it on him BEFORE he woke up from the anestetic. He's not happy about it, but is settled comfortably in his pouch on his way home with Mommy.

Glad he is ok. We were just having a discussion abotu this at the gathering. I just wish it didnt hit so close to home. I know Elena takes great care of her facility.
Thanks to the wonderful gathering she hosted, I was able to replace my last Wodent Wheel. I felt so relieved to know it would be gone. That has been the one main concern is having a Wodent left.

My boyfriend wanted to buy me a wodent wheel for my twins... after reading horror stories I went ABSOLUTELY not. So I got a TGI on the way. I wanted a Stealth but I'll get one of those later.

Sorry it took me a bit to get on and update everyone. But before I do that I've someone special to thank. Chris (glidrz5) I want to thank you for your support today. You are truely my calm front during my glider storms. Let me not forget to thank you for bringing the items needed to make this modified ecollar. She went to Staples and got the report folder and other items needed to make the ecollar before I arrived in Quincy, because I had brought the satlelite with me instead of the shot glass. She brought everything right down to the instructions, marker, and scissors. Then she even helped me make the collar. We finished it right in time as the nurse came to get us to go put it on Chuckles the exact moment we finished. She even stood guard on one end of the table as Chuckles did some amazing popcorn moves when he woke up trying to get out of the collar. To everyone else thanks for the prayers because as Chris updated Chuckles came thru the surgery and into a modified, wider then the normal, shot glass ecollar just fine. He is now settled in his hospital cage and very droopy still from the meds. But I can tell he's doing okay. He's not hungry and will only drink a few licks of water. He's more interested in getting out of the collar than anything else at the moment. I'm gonna try and feed him again in an hour or so. Maybe he'll feel up to eating more then. I will have his cage right next to my bed tonight and over the next 2 weeks or so he'll be right in the same room as me under my watchful eye. Just so everyone knows; Yes, Chuckles was hurt in a wodent wheel. And yes I have the guards in place. The wheels were just washed and oiled last week Thursday so they should not have been sticky or junky. And yet Chuckles' tail was still caught and broken. Chuckles and I are very blessed that he wasn't hurt worse then he was. It's weird because over the last 2 months or so Dancing and I have been checking into ideas on how to get my wheels modified to make them safer and then this happened. I will be slowly replacing my wheels with safer ones as I get the funds to do so. I only wish I were able to replace them all right now but that's just not possible. I'm tempted to take the wheels out of all of my cages but gliders need to run and these are the only wheels that I have so I've no choice but to leave them in for the time being. I've after surgury photos to share too. The stiches on the tip of his tail. Hanging out with mom. Dr. Sue had to take off almost 2 inches of his tail.

Thank Goodness he is doing OK. Hope he continues to improve. As for the wheels guess ya have to ask yourself if the vet bills are cheaper than replacing wheels. I would at this point have no wheels than the chance of another tail injury JMHO.. (((((HUGS)))) Glad Chris was there for ya!

So glad he got through the surgery so well! I've got an idea on the wheels, actually, for a modification instead of complete do-over.

OMG! I'm so sorry for your little one! I'm sure he'll be just fine, but how unfortunate.
I had a wodent wheel in my smaller cage that I'm swapping gliders as I'm in process of "Intro-ing" & a stealth in my large cage.
After reading this the wodent went right in the garbage! I'm not taking any chances!

Chuckles Update: He's eating today! Still won't drink much water but I've watered down some apple juice and he thinks it's the bomb. *giggle* I even got a couple of hours of sleep when Chuck spelled me at 5am til when he work me before he left for work at 7am. And he's currently sleeping off an early lunch right now. I wish I could say that he was okay about the ecollar but he's not. He hates it and gets lots of exercise trying to get it off. He took his yogurt mixed meds this morning like a good boy. They seem to be helping because he doesn't act like he's in any pain esp. when he's trying to get out of the collar. Cora~ *tears in my eyes* BELIEVE me when I say if I could replace the wheels or just throw them out I would instantly! But I educate that gliders NEED the exercise and MUST have a wheel because it's true. My heart is breaking thinking of the possibilities of what can happen until I can get it done. I have a 18 cages between my own gliders and their joeys along with those that I'm helping find new homes. I will replace the wheels but I've got to work out the funds to even get the first one at about $40 each. I have a vet fund, and thank God I did, but once spent it's hard to refund it. Since reading your post I keep asking myself should I spend the money and get a few wheels? But what if another glider has an accident or gets sick and I don't have the money then to help them? Ugh *Tears streaming down my face* What do I do? I need another HUG! Jessica~ You, Chuck and I need to talk for sure! I'm all for working with what I have if we can make them safer. And if doing it myself will cost less then $450-720. Please call me when you have time to talk.

I'm so sorry this happened, but I'm glad to hear he's doing better. I hope you can figure out something with the wheels. I have a Wodent with the axle guard on it too, and I really want to mash the buy button on a new, safer wheel too!

Elena, Joe and I are still brainstorming to figure out how to change over your wheels so they are safe. Are any of your wheels "bucket lid" types? The issue we ran into with the Wodents was the track would not FIT into the rims of the wodent. Changing over to a bearing system (instead of the center bar system) isn't the problem, it is how to attach the track.

MERRY CHRISTMAS! Thank you for wanting to help. You are too kind. Dancing I was thinking of just using the same track and removing the axel to a bearing system. Think that would work if maybe the sides were zip tied on? Or how about the stuff we use for the pvc cage frames? Tho I know the wheels wouldn't be fun to clean with the closed track the wheel would be safer then it is with the axel and that's what is best for the babies so that's all I want.

I don't think any glider died from the minute amount of glue used on it.

Kimberley I'd love to have the instructions. Can you email them to me? I may not have much money but I got crafting skills so if T can get the axel off and a bearing system on them I can zip tye the fronts and backs on myself. I can even do the pvc work if Joe puts the attachment on the bearing system. That'd mean that I just have to ship her the backs and she'd mail those back modified which would save on shipping. YAY THIS IS DOABLE! *Doing the HAPPY dance* My babies will get safer wheels much quicker if I can make this happen.

If you don't mind using zip ties to hold the solid track (the mesh track I have won't fit into the grooves of the front and back parts of the Wodent) then I'll do some surfing and see what the best price I can get on the other parts needed to convert to the bearing system.
If we can get everything at a price that is good for you Elena, Joe said we can make this happen!

I was wondering if you are 100% positive that the wheel is what broke your glider's tail. And, I was also wondering if someone could tell me why, if this wheel is so unsafe, why is it still being sold? I have a stealth wheel in my gliders cage, BUT I also have a woodant one too. My guys don't really run in it, but they play in there.. you know, like hide and seek.
I closely looked over the cage Chuckles was in and when I could find nothing else he could have gotten hurt on I pulled the wheel out and checked it. I found a small tuft of his hair snagged between the pvc guard and the back of the wheel. So yes I am sure that the wheel somehow got his tail caught and that's how his tail was broken. Maybe he felt the pull on his hair and freaked out leaping in the wrong direction to get away and that's how his tail got broken. I don't know for sure. But whatever happened it did happen in his wheel. The wheel is sold because it is way safer than a hamster wheel. People have used this wheel for years without any real issues but as with everything else freak accidents happen every so often. Sadly my boy was one of those freak accidents. Shoot I've had the Wodents in my cages since I started with gliders about 8 years ago and never had any issues with them. After this I just want all of my babies to be safe so I'll convert the wheels if at all possible or get safer ones. I personally would get the wodent out of your gliders cage, but you know why I feel that way, since you do have a safer wheel and they never run in the wodent anyway.

They are being sold because there are those that are willing to be cheap and not protect their gliders. (MY OPINION) There have been MANY gliders injured and/or killed on wodent wheels. Gliders have gotten their tails wrapped around that center bar EVEN WITH THE GUARD in place and had their tails degloved (skin/fur pulled off leaving the meat and bones still on the glider) and DIED from the trauma. These are facts, no hear-say rumors.

I do not think people buy woodant wheels because they are cheap. I just bought my woodant wheel 2 months ago from exotic nutrition, a web site that specializes in sugar gliders. I was never sent the "recall" part, or was it sent from the web site. I was never told it was unsafe, and certainly would have never bought it if I had known. I only got the stealth wheel after that because I thought it would be easier to clean. Anyway... I rigged the wheel so now my guys can't spin it it, but can still play around in there. Sorry about your glider..... but now he has some character! BTW he is such a cute little thing!

I'm sorry, I shouldn't have implied that all those that bought Wodents are cheap. Many are misinformed by greedy venders. Those selling Wodents should be required to inform glider owners of the risk of tail injuries with gliders.

The pvc guard is not usually sold with the wheel. You either have to make one for yourself or order it online. And not all websites that offer the wheel also offer the guard. I personally feel that the guard should be standard in the wheels so at least they'd be as safe as they can be. This simple low cost safety feature should be on the wheel no matter where or who you buy it from. Just so you know even if you rigged your wheel to not spin there are other ways your gliders can get hurt on it. The first thing to come to mind is they can get snagged on the cotter pin that holds it together. If that puncture wound gets infected it can be very bad for your glider. I'd just take it out since you have a safer wheel. Your boys will get accustomed to it being gone. Just replace the toy (wheel) for another toy, for every unsafe toy you take out you put one safe toy back in. Besides it gives you a reason to buy them a new toy for under the Christmas tree. LOL

Elena, Nicole just emailed me the Wodent mod that uses a hardrive part for the spin. I think you can do the same/similar with a rollerblade wheel on the back and for cheaper since harddrives are expensive. Let me email the mod to you, and yes, the track is attached with zip ties. Nicole told me she's got 4 or 5 Wobust Wodents she would send me the plates for as well if you are interested in upgrading a size in a few of your cages as well

It's not just the risk of tail injury, IMO. We got a Wodent at first but quickly replaced it with a CC. The Wodent might be OK for one glider (we won't use it), but when there are two gliders trying to use the wheel I think it's a disaster waiting to happen. What alarmed me is that one of our gliders would be running in the wheel and the other would try to jump in, and would get whacked in the head by the edge of one of the openings unless the jump was timed perfectly. I saw that happen twice and said no more. All four of them can get into the 5-inch CC at the same time. It works well, but only if they are all running in the same direction. Glad to hear Chuckles is doing well.

Tell Nicole I'm most def. interested. CHUCKLES UPDATE: He's such a cutie! Tonight I took off the blue bandage that the doctor put on to restrict the tail after surgery, cleaned his stitch site up, and applied the meds on it. Chuckles was so happy that when I was finished he trotted up my arm and cooed at me on my shoulder! Awe that made all my work so worth it. *Grinning* Then he gobbled down his meds and decided that a nap would be great. So he's again snuggled down in his sleeping pouch resting. Sleep tight my angel because sleep will help your little body heal quicker. *Glider kisses from mommy*

I am glad to hear that Chuckles is doing so much better Elena.
We contacted transoniq earlier this year to discuss the safety issues with them, and they are working on the safety of the wheel. We will do some follow up and hope to get good response.

We contacted transoniq earlier this year to discuss the safety issues with them, and they are working on the safety of the wheel. We will do some follow up and hope to get good response. I hope you're talking to him about making the guard standard on the wheels, by gosh they're cheap enough that he shouldn't even have to charge more for the wheels. CHUCKLES UPDATE: I weighed him today to see how his weight is doing and he has lost some weight he went from 86g after surgery to 78g today. But he barely ate anything on Monday so I had expected a little loss. He's ate very well yesterday and again this morning so I'm not worried at this point. His tail tip is scabbing up nicely too. He's still not at all fond of the collar but I think that may be due to the fact that it makes swallowing hard for him, which is why he isn't eating more. Poor guy. I made the BML 50/50 with water and apple juice to make it easier to swallow but with the collar around his neck you can tell it's uncomfortable to do so. I feel so bad for him but I keep reminding myself that he MUST stay in the collar until his scab falls off then he's free of it for good. I won't even chance taking it off for short periods because with the stitches he could hurt himself real quick like before I could stop him. And as we know once the SM behavior starts it can be near impossible to stop it. I'm gonna keep him safe even if it means he is slightly uncomfortable now. Doesn't that stink, you have to make someone or something uncomfortable to help them heal? But such is life. At least he will get better and when he does the collar will come off. I like him am counting the days til the collar is gone.

Elena, you might be able to wrap his tail with some vet wrap for short periods to allow him time out of his collar (with supervision) so he can eat and groom himself. This way if he goes after the tail there is the vet wrap as a barrier.

This is one of those things that you have to face once in awhile that they didn't tell you about before: TOUGH LOVE You don't know how badly I feel your pain/anxiety/anguish....I have at least 6 nub-tailed babies honey! With just a couple inches missing, he should have pretty close to "normal" life...but being a "tail carrier" could pose a bit of a challenge for him. If you feel that you'd have too much of a hard time putting the e-collar back on, then take the "smart" perspective and don't take it off! But DO keep an eye on how loose it's getting....losing a few grams is normal when a glider is in an e-collar, and he could lose enough to sneak out when you're not expecting it! (so speaks the voice of the "been there/done that" lady) Hang in there!!! Just a few more days........

I contacted Eric at Transoniq via email today and am waiting for a response. Will keep you all updated via a new post. I know that Transoniq will send you some guards for free when you ask them. He mentioned some time ago that they are looking into ways to making the Wodent wheels more safe. Hopefully I will be able to revert with more on that as well.

Casper, Elena has the guard on all of her wheels. It was just cleaned Thursday, and she still found a broken tail and a clump of his fur stuck in the wheel. The Wodent is NOT a safe wheel for gliders. The center bar is a big risk, covered or not.

Jessica, I don't think Casper is saying the wodent wheel is safe or not, he is merely trying to create awareness with Transoniq with regards to the accidents that do happen. He feels that there are a lot of people buying the wodent wheel, and that instead of knocking it, he would like to make them aware of the safety risks and see improvement.

Oh! Sorry I mis-interpreted then. I do think though, that Transoniq is aware of the problem, or else they would not already be selling the tail guards though. It is definitely a problem, and a hard choice for owners, especially new ones, to choose among all the wheel options.

okay I had no idea all this was going on with woodent wheels, when I first started researching gliders that was acceptable and now I have 2. I will look into the stealth does anyone have any suggestions?

Jag, The safest wheels are ones that do not have a center bar, like the Stealth, TGI, and Custom Cruiser. There is always some kind of risk when you put an item in your glider's cage. I mean, they get hurt in the wild, right? So technically anything is possible. With the Wodent, they get the wheel spinning so fast that their tail can wrap around the bar. If you do a search in the accessories archives' you can read the pros and cons of all of these wheels. flyingmarsupial.com has a video review where you can see 3 of these wheels side by side.

I got a response from Transoniq saying that they are investigating ways to improve their wheels to make them more safe. I will revert when I know more.

I am so happy to hear that Chuckles is doing a lot better! Even though it hurts to see them having to go through this, the best part is how they become more attached to us.

CHUCKLES UPDATE: We just got back from the vet office. Chuckles had his stitches removed and the vet said she can't believe how good he looks. She had expected him to lose a little weight but he didn't. Hum I wonder why? The little piggy. LOL He's still in the ecollar but doc says that we can take it off when his scab is gone, which she feels should happen shortly. So I'll update again when he's finally out of the collar. Thanks everyone for your prayers and support. Jessica I wear a large. LOL

Chuckles Update: Well one of Chuckles feedings last night wasn't any fun for either of us. I thought I'd give him a nice Christmas treat so hubby and I took off the ecollar so Chuckles could eat with his own hands. Well as I took off the ecollar a tuft of hair came off with it. When I saw it I snagged him up and sure enough he had a spot on his neck that the ecollar had rubbed until it created a sore. It must have started a couple of days ago as I just had him out of the collar collar on Wed. and I didn't see anything then. Once all the crud and bunched hair was removed the wound on his neck is about the round size of a pencil eraser. Called the emergency number for my vet and I was told that my vet is out of town but the doctor on duty checked out Chuckles file and told me to treat the new neck wound just as we did his tail sugery site. Ugh so now we start the healing process for his neck. What bothers me most about this new wound is that it sits right under the ecollar so it is rubbing it at all times. God that has got to hurt. I'm keeping it covered in neosporen in hopes of helping the ecolar slide over and not stick to the wound. needless to say I had another sleepless night worring. Please keep Chuckles in your prayers for a speedy healing.

I am sorry Elena. Teresa mentioned Vetericyn. She said it speeds up the healing, don't know if you want to contact her and try it? Thinking of you and Chuckles.

Talked to Elena...
The wound on his neck is small and where he can't chew it so other than keeping it healthy and it healing, it isn't a "major" concern.
The issue comes in with he now can not wear an ecollar (it will make the neck wound worse) so she is in for long nights keeping him away from his tail.
He's already on baytril and she has pain meds so he'll be good to go on those.
I told her to have Chuck hold him while she goes and takes a nap. Question is...WILL SHE????

Elena, I'm so sad to hear of this complication! If I thought it would help even ONE iota, I'd offer to get an emergency jacket on its way to you in the morning...but...e-jackets still allow a glider to have access to their tail UNLESS it's practically a complete amputation. I do want you to look at the e-collar you had on Chuckles and answer one simple question for me: the bottom part that's closest to your glider's neck...are those bottom corners rounded off or square? The ONE THING that I think the e-collar instructions need to say is something to the effect of this: "after you have fitted the collar for proper size, ROUND OFF THE SQUARE CORNERS to eliminate the sharp edges...cover with moleskin at both ends. This will REDUCE the chance of friction rubbing injuries." And I will respectfully disagree with you, T, about how Chuckles can't reach the wound on the back of his neck...he might dig at it with his grooming claws! If you see this happening, Elena, call me!!!!!! I've learned a trick to covering up a mating wound.

Minkasmom please pm me your number. He scratches so close it scares me. I've pisted him so much he's pisting back. LOL But thankfully he hasn't reopened anything yet. But then I've not allowed him time too, his on me at all times. Agh another sleepless few nights. No T I didn't get that nap in. Chuck had too much to do to stop and spell me. All the edges are rounded and mole skined. The edge that rode his neck was even retro fitted with an extra layer of mole foam to aviod this kind of shoulder wound. All to no avail sadly. Course he was always trying to wiggle out of it, the only time he wasn't trying to get out of it he was eating or sleeping, so maybe the extra wiggling and neck turning just made the situation worse.
Chuckles update: Well the bad news isn't done yet. I noticed that Chckles has another smaller wound on his other shoulder. Not only that but I found that he has a finger on each hand, a thumb and pointer, that has a red a swollen pad. Only way I can figure that he got these is from his constant battle trying to scratch off the ecollar. Treating these new areas like I am the others. Total of 5 spots to watch for now. One tail tip, one on each shoulder, and one on each hand. Please pray that this ends, that he doesn't reopen anything, and that all wounds and swelling heals quickly.

Oh no! I will be praying for all of you Elena! I know it has to be hard on Chuckles but it's hard on you and Chuck too, and all the other gliders that depend on you. *hugs* Call me if I can help, ok? Is there a mild sedative the vet could give him that would maybe make him sleep and not fight everything so much, sorta distract him from picking at things? I dunno. Maybe that would be too dangerous with a glider....I both wish I did and am relieved that I don't have as much hands-on experience in a matter like this.

Denise, when I talked to Elena, I said he couldn't chew on the back wounds and did advise her to clip his nails including the grooming nails so they weren't razor sharp if he were to groom the wound.
So, you are not contradicting at all, I just didn't post that info on here.

Jessica the pain meds he's on seem to make him more sleepy so now that he's back on them that should help. He was off them at docs suggestion over the last week. But with new issues emer. vet said to restart pain meds and antibiotic. So we'll soon see if it helps.

Well I'm still awake. Yawning like crazy but still here. Chuckles Update: Meds seem to be helping him sleep between grooming sessions. I had no idea they spend so much time grooming. He's got more toys in his pouch then he would normally have taken in there on his own. I've been trying to distract the grooming with toys. Works for a minute or less a toy. So you can imagine how many toys he has in there. LOL With all the grooming he's not focusing on his tail thankfully. But his hands are another matter. Those fingers seem to bother him more than anything else. But the distractions are helping cause they are looking less of an angry red and closer to normal color. Even the swelling has gone down a tinny bit. He's managed to groom around the wounds on his shoulders without getting into them and reopening them. Tho I don't let him groom as much as he wants to so that may be helping. And the wounds are both dry and clean at the moment. No crusties at all. Been using the Vetericyn every 3 hours and it's amazing stuff. They actually look better at this time then I thought they would. Progress I'd say. He was so happy to have the ecollar off and eat with his own hands that he chirped the entire time he ate. Then he checked out every corner of his cage, even though he's been in it for 2+ weeeks it's not his normal cage and he's no longer wearing the collar and can get his nose up to everything. He even went for a quick run in the wheel that T sent my way. Thanks T! He loves it! He's such a trooper and I'm so proud of him! If he keeps doing this well maybe some sleep is in my future but not tonight. At this point the closest sleep is when Chuck gets home from work this evening. Wouldn't you know as I sit here typing Chuckles is currently, in a pouch safety pinned to my sweatshirt, SLEEPING! At least one of us is getting some sleep tonight! Oh well I feel good knowing he's safe.

We do what we have to when they need us Elena, hang in there. I'm sure Chuckles appreciate you for "YOU". You are wonderful! Just a thought, I had a rescue who was prone to SM and my vet used tiny strips of band aid around his wrists to keep him distracted. It kept him busy and worked really well. He was playing and fiddling with these instead of his wound. I still had to stay up with him, but the distraction proved do work and he could heal without messing with the wound.
