Has anyone ever had a vet give their gilder an antibiotic injection instead of oral antibiotics? No matter what I do, I am no longer able to get my glider to keep down his meds and it's causing an escalation of symptoms. I recently took my cat to the vet and she gave him a shot instead of oral antibiotics for a UTI. That gave me the idea to check whether it would be possible to do the same thing for a glider.

To shorten a very long backstory, I have a glider who has had pretty much constant UTI for nearly five years. I've gone through four different vets over the years. I like the vet he sees now, but she's not the most experienced with glider health problems. Because of that, I prefer to research any treatment/care ideas I have before I bring them to her.

Yes.

Baytril can be given as an injection, but it has to be repeated to be effective.

Convenia has shown to be very effective in gliders. It stays in the system up to 14 days and is not metabolized by the liver.

If you have experienced the UTI this long, I would recommend a Convenia shot followed by a second one 14 days later. UTIs are difficult to treat in sugar gliders. They require a long course of antibiotics in most cases.

My vet actually prefers injectable antibiotic courses over oral ones. They are usually more effective and definitely less likely to upset the glider's intricate digestive system which can often lead to other issues.

Thanks so much for the information. For the past couple years he has been on 8-12 week courses of antibiotics with testing in between. Oral antibiotics have never eliminated the UTI. He's had the UTI since I got him at 7 weeks and he just celebrated his 5th birthday yesterday. I could always get his meds into him until about 6 months ago when he somehow figured out how to close up his throat or something.

I'll call my vet tomorrow and ask her about Convenia.
