I'm almost positive that this question has never been asked, If it has my apologies for the repeat.

PLEASE NO DRAMA

Do Sugar Gliders have fingerprints?

I have been in law enforcement, civilian side (not sworn) for the last 30 yrs. I'm quite aware of the importance of fingerprints. NO, 2 people in the world have the same fingerprints. The importance of having fingerprints on file with law enforcement can be as helpful as identifying a criminal to a missing person, unidentified person, including juveniles. Especially, if the missing person/juvenile suffers from mental, physical or emotional abuse, and are unable to verbally say who they are.

So I was just in the shower and had the thought of, do gliders have fingerprints, since they have fingers & thumbs like us, humans? I was thinking how horrible it would be to lose my babies. And if I did and someone was lucky enough to find it for me, and it was hopefully taken to the SPCA or vet, is there a way of my baby finding its way back to me?

I would also think that this could assist breeders in identifying their babies if there were an ownership disagreement, especially if a baby was surrender back to its breeder. Is the breeder absolutely sure it's the same baby they sold or adopted out, that their getting back? And/or if, as we know a lot of babies look so much alike it's hard to tell them apart.

If they do have fingerprints, has this avenue of identification been explored? Is there already a database with this information? We chip our dogs & cats for identification in case of loss or theft. Can this be done for the gliders?

I will also be posting this same question/thought on a couple other forums for feedback. I would also like to hear what you out there in glider land have to say about this issue.

All I ask is PLEASE NO DRAMA!!!
Thanks in advance to all for your interest and comments. Like the motto says "For the good of the Glider".

Yes, they do have finger prints. I wouldn't know if no two gliders are alike though.

As tiny as their fingers are I don't think you would get a clear print to identify them by.

I had a gal take a paw print of Gizmo with a pet safe colorant and there were no discernible finger prints in her paw print.

Cool idea though!

When I was researching before I was owned by any, I did read somewhere online that each glider does have a unique print. Altho it would be WAY COOL to have their prints, I don't think you would be able to see them very well. I scrapbook and thought about printing my tribe just for my own book. Never thought about it being an identifying thing.

The idea of chipping a glider has been discussed, but because of the physical make-up of a glider it is not suggested to chip.

Huh this is a very interesting question I never even thought about this. I have often thought that if kodah got away he would just be gone forever but I never considered anything like this. I would however like to do kodahs paw print that would be cute!!

The gal that took the print of Gizmo's hand does paw print jewelry. She take your pets print and then cuts it out of brass and makes it into a bracelet or other piece of jewelry.

They do have fingerprints, but how would the typical person (even vet or SPCA employee) be able to discern the difference. I don't know much about finger print reading, but I don't think it is easy to read them for humans (without all the computer work), let alone an animal - that's why they have specialists and trained technicians. I just can't see it as a feasible option for tracking or identifying gliders.

As for chipping - it's possible, but since so few people would consider looking for a chip in a glider (then you have to worry about them having the right scanner for the right chip, etc.). So again, doesn't seem like a feasible option. dunno

What is it about a glider that would make it unadvisable to microchip? Where has this been discussed? I have never thought about doing this, but now that I am, I would like to know why it can't be done physically.

As for not knowing what scanner to use with what chip, how do they do this with dogs and cats, shouldn't there be the same problem?

It was discussed months ago. The reason it is advisable not to get a glider microchipped is because gliders can tell when something is wrong. Lets say the micro chip goes in between the shoulder blades. That gliders mate will try to take the chip out which will start the glider Self mutalating. Gliders pick up on things like that.

Oh wow! I didn't even think about the glider's mate! It's understandable, chips are about the size of a grain of rice, so its not very noticeable on a dog, but on a glider it would definitely be something that another glider would notice.
That's too bad, maybe one day they will come up with a way to be able to track our babies!

Yesterday I was cooking dinner the other night when my little one popper her head out of my bra and just did not want to go back in. So I gave her to my husband to snuggle with while I finished. I walked back in the room 15 min later and said "do you know gliders have finger prints?" Sorry just had to share.
