Are common feeder goldfish okay/digestible for sugar gliders as a snack? Would the little bones be a problem? I read that pinkies were okay, and they love them. I know that goldfish are a decent source of nutrients for some animals, however, I don't think they would be a food source that gliders would naturally exploit. Between a crab, 3 geckos and a frog they all seem to leave me with a few fish and pinkies every once in a while.
I know I may be getting a death stare through the computer right now but I haven't seen it mention and just wanted to ask first.

Feeder fish are often sick and not taken care of properly like the goldfish that they sell to public. There's 100's of them packed in a tiny tank and they're constantly stressed and prone to disease and infection. I'm no expert but I have a tank if goldfish and do follow closely on them and wouldn't suggest it. Someone else may say otherwise, this is just my opinion.

:agreed: I wouldn't do it. I've heard of people feeding lizards to gliders as well, I wouldnt do that either.

Thank you for the input. I know that they can be dirty fish, I guess I kind of wanted confirmation. As long as someone else concurs then I will steer clear.

I wouldnt do it.

2 reasons: as was mentioned, you really do not know what ANY fish are carrying whether feeders or not.
And in the wild, it doesnt seem as though fish would be sought out as a natural food source. Oh I know some of you are saying "well neither is pasta or yogurt" and that is true. But looking at something like a whole fish, with guts and bones, would the gliders, by instinct or by design, know how or be able to handle, eating such a food?

ok, 3 reasons LOL
I have a hard time feeding a live bug to my gliders, I certainly couldnt feed a fish, but thats just me.

Like any aspect of animal care, the owner needs to make an educated decision. And in the end, it is YOUR decision to make.

Not a death stare, but I kinda looked like this when I read that --->

:roflmao2:

I agree with JillMarie. When it comes to feeding these guys, I try to look at what they would likely eat in nature. And I just don't see them trying to catch a fish to eat.

I don't feed them pasta either. (I do splurge a bit with yogurt occassionally though) tounge

I actually won't feed fish to any of my pets because of a friend who almost lost her dog to a bout of scombroid poisoning. Google can probably explain it better than I can.

While live goldfish wouldn't be candidates for causing this, if your gliders didn't finish them in one sitting and then went back, they could be at risk. Cooking does not destroy the histamines, which is the scariest part; you are at risk if the fish has been improperly stored any step of the way.

I grimaced at the poster above who mentioned live lizards. Those would be icky little things to eat; salmonella and flukes come to mind, though I'm also thinking other parasites (nematodes?).

I know that goldfish produce A LOT of Ammonia. Most fish owners will tell you not to put goldfish with other fish because the Ammonia they put off will kill the other fish. I am not sure if the ammonia is actually in their body, but it would make sense that it is... Ammonia is toxic to humans! Let alone little boogers...

There are so many other snacks and treats that are safe to give them, leave the fishies to the other critters thumb

I have fed goldfish and anoles before and have never had a case of salmonella or any fecals positive for parasites. However, mine get raw meats daily, so their systems might be able to handle it better. I would weigh the risks and decide.

Ack! You feed RAW meat to your gliders? Yikes!! I'd be way to scared to ever do that.

Thank you all for the wonderful information. About ammonia in goldfish, I know they have higher levels of alkaline in them which can be harmful to other non-goldfish/carp species, but I didn't know they produce deadly levels of ammonia. I believe goldfish are harmless to humans unless diseased before ingestion.

Goldfish are generally considered worse feeder fish, at least for most snake people, because they contain a chemical called copper sulfate that feeders like feeder minnows and guppies do not. I have no idea if that would be harmful for gliders or not, though it can build up in the liver.

But as several others have said, parasites abound in the feeder world (there is a risk with pretty much any kind of feeder, actually). None of that means it will cause a problem in your glider. It's just like crickets, many, many people feed crickets, some regularly. Aflatoxin poisoning can be a higher risk in crickets, and many years back several people lost gliders to Aflatoxin poisoning they thought (some confirmed) came from crickets. That doesn't stop a lot of us from feeding them, now. Do your own research and be aware of the risks.
