Okay, someone requested in another thread that I break down the other diets by ingredients like I did those pellets. I work in the dog food industry and one of my main jobs is breaking down ingredient lists into English. If I don't list one that you would like to see a breakdown on, please, feel free to post it. This is in no way bashing any diets, but to be used as a tool to aid in an informed decision. Everything bolded is an ingredient that I would stay away from, personally. Each one will have it's own post, so be patient. :willy:

Quiko Sugar Glider Food
28 oz.
Feeding oat meal, pork meal, poultry meal, cereal food fines, wheat middlings, wheat flour, dehydrated alfalfa meal, blood meal, full flat flax meal, brewers dried yeast, calcium carbonate, dehulled soybean meal, soybean oil, shrimp meal, freeze dried mealworms, honey, potassium chloride, salt, dehydrated kelp, wheat germ meal, mango juice, kiwi juice, cherry juice, apple juice, apricot juice, guar gum, dehydrated carrots, dehydrated celery, dehydrated parsley, dehydrated bell peppers, dehydrated tomato, dicalcium and monocalcium phospate, grapeseed meal, yucca schidigera extract, dehydrated papaya fruit powder, magnesium oxide, lactobacillus acidophilus, enterococcus faecium, lactobacillus casei, bifidobacterium bifidum, niacin supplement, vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin supplement, d-calcium pantothenate, menadione dimethylpyrimindinol bisulfite (source of vitamin K activity), biotin, folic acid, thiamine mononitrate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, vitamin A supplement, vitamin D3 supplement, vitamin E supplement, beta carotene, l-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate, choline chloride, copper sulfate, cobalt sulfate, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, zinc sulfate, ethylenediamine dihydriodide, sodium selenite.

Breakdown!!

Feeding oat meal, cereal food fines, wheat middlings, wheat flour, wheat germ meal: They are all considered by-products of the human food processing system. A by-product, by definition, is anything leftover after taking out the "good stuff" for human consumption. That means that the quality is just never where it should be.

blood meal: If it is an animal product and does not specify what animal it comes from, it could be any! Some food companies routinely use former companion animals that were left at the pound and euthanized.

dehulled soybean meal, soybean oil,: Soy is a big no-no in the dog food world. It is a cheap source of protein and studies have shown a correlation between diets high in soy and cancer, heart disease, and brain degeneration.

salt: used in foods to provide flavor. There is no reason to add extra salt to foods that are already sufficient

menadione dimethylpyrimindinol bisulfite (source of vitamin K activity): My biggest problems with commercial foods come from the use of artificial vitamins. There is a reason why Europe and Australia have banned them and currently the only source of synthetic vitamins is CHINA and they are not known to produce the highest quality food products

If someone wants to PM me a list or post here on which ones they want done, please feel free to do so. Even better? Post an ingredients list for me. It seems a few companies don't want to post their ingredient lists online.

diatomaceous earth...

You had this in bold but I have to say this is NOT an issue. I feed diatomaceous earth to all my animals (gliders, horses, chickens, cockatoo, dogs and iguana) and have even used it myself. It naturally gets rid of "gut" parasites.

It is found in a LOT of "human grade" food items. It is usually used as an anti-caking item.

ETA: AAFCO stands for: Association of Animal Feed Control Officials

Did you know that Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (source of Vitamin K3) is the ONLY source of Vitamin K approved by the AAFCO at this time??

Did you also know that it is used widely in Organic foods as well??

Did you also know that the Whey Protein and Soy Proteins are used in several sugar glider diets (Original HPW™, LGRS, HPW Plus™ and Reeps diet) and gliders have been eating these diets for quite some time now??

Here are the letters written from Liz Higgins
Chair, AAFCO PFC and Ali Kashani, AAFCO Vitamin Investigator
beneath them I will include the link where these can be found. You see, someone else was worried about it as well and was trying to find a way to use something else....

Quote:
"Menadione sodium bisulfite complex is the only acceptable source of Vitamin K in pet foods. At this time, no other sources of Vitamin K are allowed in pet food including natural Vitamin K and K1 (phylloquinone). If you have additional questions regarding vitamins, please contact Ali Kashani, who is AAFCO's Vitamin Investigator.
I hope this answers your question,

Regards,

Liz Higgins
Chair, AAFCO PFC"

The letter from Ali Kashani

Quote:
"Good morning Susan,

I certainly remember meeting you at the January AAFCO meeting and our brief discussion on the first and second days of the meeting.

In order for ingredients to be considered safe and effective for their intended use, data need to be submitted and reviewed, unless one of other conditions like generally recognized safe (GRAS) and or prior history of safety use have been determined. Menadione or Menadione sodium bisulfite complex has a GRAS status for use in poultry feed at 2 to 4 g per ton of feed (Federal Register 55:50777, December 10, 1990). . States and FDA have given low regulatory priority for use of the above vitamin as source of vitamin K in other species’ feeds including pet food.

I believe Liz’s reference was to pure sources of vitamin K. If you have ingredients that contain natural sources of vitamin K in their composition, as long as the methods of analyses are legitimate and can be verified, I believe the manufacturer can list it in the guaranteed analysis section of the label, as long as they meet other requirements (units of the vitamin, etc.).

I hope the above explanation adequately addresses your questions. Please let me know if I can provide any additional explanation. Best Regards! Ali"

The link for you to read this page in its entirety can be found http://www.truthaboutpetfood.com/articles/the-only-approved-vitamin-k-supplement-in-pet-food.html

Also, if you look on the net, you will see many food items that use this in their organic foods, here is just one...
http://www.countrysideorganics.com/product.php?productid=140

Quote:

Organic Turkey Starter Feed, 50 lb.

Crude protein, minimum 23.00%
Crude fat, minimum 3.00%
Crude fiber, maximum 5.00%

INGREDIENTS

Organic Field Peas, Organic Corn, Organic Wheat, Fish Meal, Organic Flaxseed, Organic Rice Bran, Organic Alfalfa Meal, Calcium Carbonate, Dried Organic Kelp, Dicalcium Phosphate, Salt, Sodium Selenite, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Choline, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex, d-Pantothenic Acid, Niacin, Riboflavin, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamine, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Biotin, Folic Acid, Iron Polysaccharide Complex, Manganese Polysaccharide Complex, Zinc Polysaccharide Complex, Copper Polysaccharide Complex, Cobalt Polysaccharide Complex, Yeast Culture, Dried Lactobacillus Acidophilus Fermentation Product, Bacillus Licheniformis, Bacillus Subtilis, Lactobacillus Lactis, Enterococcus Faecium, (Dried Aspergillis Oryzae Fermentation Extract)

Please also let us remember, that when a product does use this in their foods the amount is sooooo small it really doesnt have that much of a threat to it. It is when it is consumed in very large amounts that makes it dangerous. We can say this about many things we eat or drink.

And yes, my Manufacturing company is AAFCO approved.

Im always intimidated when it comes to questioning diets because people always seem so offended frown

Thank you PocketPrincess for doing a break down of popular diet ingredients and sharing your knowledge and opinion on certain ingredients with us! It is always good to see things from a wide variety of perspectives! smile

Do you know anything about the VGV diet? I recently read about that and have considered using is a couplete nights a week along with my HPW complete.

Opinions?
