So while we were at the SGGA, I told my daughter that Jeepers would be her glider when we got home. Not surprisingly, for the past two days, she's been carrying her around a lot from about 4:30 til 9:00 and I've been having some tent time with her after that too. Normally, they don't get up until 10:30 to 11:30 or even later.

Now Jeepers normally crabs enthusiastically and loudly whenever you disturb her in her pouch. Last night we noticed that her crab was kinda slow and quieter. I thought great, she's already calming down with the extra attention! After Syd went to bed I had a little tent time with her and fed her some mealies but she wasn't all that enthusiastic. In fact, after eating about 5, she refused the last one. So I put her in her cage with Peepers and she nibbled a little on a piece of avocado (I don't feed those much, but I thought I'd give them a yummy supper and they actually do need to put on some weight) went up for a drink and crawled into the Pringles can I put in there on the bottom of the cage. This was about 11:30 or midnight. Then I went to bed.

Usually when I get up in the morning, if it's early enough, they are still bouncing around the cage and running on the wheel. This morning I did sleep in a bit, but only about half an hour. Peepers was still up, but starting to slow down. Jeepers was still in the Pringles can. I don't know if she stayed in there all night or went back in this morning. I got her out of the can and she found herself a piece of cherry that I had fed with the avocados last night and ate the whole half of the cherry, then went in her pouch. I offered her a mealie in the pouch and she just did that quiet slow crab again and didn't want the mealie. At this point I'm getting worried.

Before you say get her to the vet I did call a vet, although not a glider specialist, she has seen them and is a good friend of mine and a good vet. I told her all of the above as well as the fact that there have been no runny poops, she's not dehydrated (first thing I checked) and they are eating and drinking although not as enthusiastically. The vet said (on the phone) that she thought she might just be tired from Syd waking her up early, and you know how she was with Rikki last weekend. She has to constantly be looking in the pouch, etc.

So we're just going to let her rest all day today and see how she feels tonight.

I wondered if anyone who had their gliders at the SGGA noticed them acting different. I keep hearing in my head Lucy saying that lethargy is the #1 first symptom in death database gliders, but in this case, I think the lethargy is justified. I'm hoping to feel less worried if others of you say "yeah, mine are exhausted".

Mine were exhausted and yes, Syd was in and out of Rikki's pouch, but he's so darn cute!!

Back to your question though, I did notice that my travlers slept in a little while longer when we got home Sunday evening, and I put all their food out anyways. Like you, I started getting worried that Rikki did not come out of his pouch and it was nearly 1:30 AM, so I got him out and he immediately went to his food dish and started chowing down. He was just tired from all his SGGA fun!

Just give them a day to rest all day and maybe let Syd get them a little later this afternoon, that way they'll be rested a little so as you can observe their eating and other behavior. If at that point they still act lethargic and tired, maybe a vet check is in order. But I think they are jsut a little tired and not used to getting sooo much attention all at once. I personally think they'll be okay, but do what you feel best.

Let us know how they act tonight.. schedule, eating, Syd's visits... etc.

Well, the good news is that Syd is going home from camp with a friend to spend the night so they'll get plenty of rest today. I just peeked in at Jeepers while I'm home at lunch and her crab is still weak. I didn't want to disturb her too much so I didn't try to get her out or feed her or anything.

Could she have a sore throat from crabbing?

I've not heard Badger go hoarse from crabbing yet, but Roxy kinda lost her voice once after barking for hours on end..so I guess it's possible

If you still don't feel right about her this evening I'd take her for a vet check to be on the safe side.

PK, I remember that happening to mine after the SGGA, too - it would take them some time to get back into their routine. I think it's pretty common. Remember, you crossed time zones, too!

It could also be due to the heat-- I know mine have been extra-lazy and not eating as much as normal lately because it's been over 100 degrees here. I keep their room nice and air-conditioned, but the heat's been getting to me even though I've been indoors all day.

Sundra-for some reason I thought you didn't bring yours-I could be wrong, tho. All mine are exhausted (we got home at 4 this afternoon). If yours stayed home, I'd say a vet visit is definitely in order-for peace of mind if nothing else.

She didn't bring hers, but Syd has had them visiting with her wearing a pouch a lot since they got home..... That's what I understood, too Jen...... But if they aren't used to rousing about throughout the day, they will get worn out.

Peepers, How did they do last night??

Yes, you are right CyCy that I didn't have them at SGGA, but Syd was keeping Jeepers up since we got home. I just titled the post about the SGGA thinking if there's ever a time when there would be a lot of gliders in the same boat, it would be this week.

Well, she's really not better nor worse this morning. Syd went home with her friend to spend the night yesterday, and I didn't disturb Jeepers except to check on her a couple times so she had all day to rest. I was on the phone with Miss Ellen last night and I went to put the phone by the pouch so she could hear this weak crab and she did a normal crab. I've never been so happy to hear her crab! but since then, she still hasn't been herself, and still does the weak crab.

I guess it's off to the vet today.

She's still not dehydrated according to the skin test, but I tried to get some urine this morning and she only produced a single tiny drop. So the main symptom is still lethargy. Still no runny poops. She'll come out of her pouch a little, but moves slowly around the cage. I saw her drinking but not eating so I did force a little bit of PML.

My family that came with me to the SGGA all slept in late the next night. But were mostly back to normal the next day.

However, I did have to take three of them into the vet on Tuesday. The two boys who stayed home had runny stools when I got back and were taken in for fecals. Nothing showed up but I will be collecting fecals throughout the week to be taken in and tested.

And one of the boys who came with me showed signs of a UTI when we got back so he was taken in. The vet couldn't get a urine sample from him but prescribed an antibiotc anyway based on what I had described.

Whew

Kristin, we seem to stay on the same schedule with sick gliders. It turns out Jeepers was constipated. She's passed a litle stool but is still feeling very badly.

I actually went back to posting on the Peepers and Jeepers are sick thread because that's where I've been chronicaling their health issues the past few months. Just skip down to the bottom to see what's going on now.

I hope your gliders get well soon!

Well, I don't know which thread to update, so I guess I'll update this one. The one I mentioned above is getting too long and the problem Jeepers is having now doesn't seem the same as before.

So after Jeepers had a day of rest on Wednesday and was still lethargic, I took her in. Upon palpating her belly, my vet felt that she was constipated because she could feel hard stools in her colon. She was sub-cued although she wasn't very dehydrated at that point and I went home and forced fluids and a tiny bit of vegetable oil.

The next day (Friday), she did pass some stools, the first of which were oily. But she didn't feel any better, in fact maybe worse. She was getting that droopy sick glider look. So I took her back and after consulting with Dr. Teresa Bradley (Dancing's vet) and Dr. Scott Echols (an Austin glider vet) we decided to put her on Baytril and do supportive treatment until the urine culture and sensitivities we sent out Thursday come back.

She spent most of Friday at the vet's office and I wish I hadn't done that because their air conditioning went out that day and they had a litter of about 9 eight-week-old doberman puppies running around the office and other dogs barking so I think Jeeps was really stressed. When I came to get her, she'd been out of her pouch all day and looked very stressed and was breathing hard and not keeping herself groomed.

The glider vets did say they'd like to get blood work, but Dr. Tracy (my vet/friend) admitted she was not comfortable trying to draw blood from little 65gram Jeepers, and frankly neither was I.

At this time, Jeepers is very gravely ill. I guess I didn't keep forcing enough fluids into her last night so this morning she was very dehydrated. When I did the pinch test, the skin just stayed up, not even going down slowly. My vet was out of town, but she called in to the emergency vet asking them to give me the stuff for a sub-cue and I took it to a friend who's a vet tech and she helped me by giving it. That helped some, but I wish they'd given me more. I'm trying to force about 2-3cc's of a mixture of Gatoraide and Ensure every couple of hours.

She actually licked a little yogurt from my finger a while ago and lapped at the gatoraid/ensure mixture a bit before I had to force the rest. That was an improvement. To tell the truth, I was expecting the worst when I went in to see her first thing this morning. If she's still with us Monday, I will take her to the glider vet and let them try to get some blood. I also hope to hear something about the C & S Monday. Tomorrow my vet will be back and I'm sure I'll be able to get more sub-cues if necessary.

We honestly don't know what is wrong with her. I'm hoping for a UTI so the Baytril will have an effect. Other possibilities are a blockage which some of the stools are able to squeeze by or some sort of organ failure I guess.

Prayers would be appreciated.

Oh, dear, oh, dear! She's such a wee one! Sending lots of and prayers your way for little Jeepers to recover.

Is Ensure good to give if she's constipated and dehydrated? Since citrus can cause diarrhea, how about orange juice? Once there's a blockage, I just don't know... Can her belly be gently massaged at all (without causing her pain) to help loosen what's in there? Or is that a horrible no-no?

Oh Sundra, I'm so sorry that Jeepers is unwell I wish they were able to tell you more instead of having to wait until Monday, it makes for a very long weekend.

If she's as dehydrated as you think should they sub cue her some some fluids or do you feel that you are able to get enough into her?

My only thing is the feeding her Ensure if she's dehydrated. I've read in a few past posts that the body can absorb all the fluids out of the Ensure before it passes through the body and possibly leave a 'chalky' lump mix that is difficult to pass through the intestines and sometimes cause a blockage

You guys probably have a point about Ensure. Seems I've heard that too. I haven't been giving her much, just about 1:4 with Gatoraide. I think this next batch I'm going to do BML with Glideraide.

Well, I stuck with forcing the fluids every 2 1/2 hours for the past 24 hours and she's still back to badly dehydrated. She never really got fully hydrated after the sub-cu but she was noticably better.

I don't know whether to take her in to get more sub-cu's or to help her to the bridge. It's heartbreaking to force the fluids now and she's fighting me more on it, although not with more strength. She is so miserable and definitely hasn't improved though she's been on the Baytril since Friday afternoon and this is Sunday morning. Is 4 doses enough to expect improvement? I'm amazed that so many people just come in to find their gliders dead in a morning after they seem completely fine the night before. She has seemed to be barely alive since Friday but she's still hanging on, literally. Twice last night when I came in to give her the fluids, she was hanging from the underside of a wire shelf and cold. The last time I just stayed up on the couch and held her in a dryer-warmed pouch to keep her warm.

I just tried to force some fluids again and I couldn't do any more than 1/4cc. I just feel like I'm torturing her and I don't know if she wants me to continue or let her go.

Sundra, my prayers and thoughts are with you and Jeepers.

As for improvement, I believe it will take around three days on the Batryil before there is usually a noticeable improvement...so give it some more time. I know every minute must be so hard watching her and knowing she feels awful and not being sure what to do from here -- but maybe the meds will really start to kick in soon and things will look up for the both of you.

When Amaya was really sick and I got terrified that we might lose her, I forcefed BML watered down with Gatorade or Pedialyte and then twice a day I would add a little yogurt to the mix as well. She seemed to take that better than anything. In between feeding I would also offer water, Gatorade, or Glideraide -- anything to keep her hydrated.

Good luck with everything

Okay, I talked to Dancing and to Mary and Charlie, and they've given me renewed hope (as have you, Kristin and Sissy) because they've pulled gliders through who were this sick. So we're going to keep fighting.

Mary said the best thing to give in her opinion is Pedialyte and to give it every 15 minutes until she's better hydrated. sounds like I was way underdoing it last night and yesterday. So I ran to Walgreens and got Pedialyte and we're going every 15 minutes. I just got 2 cc's down her. Hopefully my vet will call soon and we can get her another subQ (never know how to write that. I know it's short for sub-cutaneous.)

We were supposed to go to Sea World tomorrow. It's just about a 2 hour drive to San Antonio. Of course the kids were very excited to go. I sat down with Sydney a few minutes ago and told her that if I was going to be able to save Jeepers, I couldn't go to Sea World, and I wasn't sure Daddy would want to go if I don't. I was so proud of her answer. She said "Well, Jeepers is my glider now, so I won't go either and maybe Daddy will take Jessica."

Aww, Sundra-all my prayers. Keep the fluids down her-when we talked, she wasn't that bad, so listen to what you were told. Avoid Ensure with dehydration (we found out the hard way with Peek-he vomited a tiny bit-thick clay texture ensure-the rest wouldn't come up because of the consistency-and he tried to choke to death on what did come up). Pedialyte and Gliderade for nutrition along with Calcium is what Riker got when he nearly died with the HLP for several days-then we progressed to BML and Babyfood with it as he pulled thru. Keep her ON YOU and warm as much as you can-this critical and you need to supply body heat for them or it will make them crash faster-the less resource they have to spend maintaining body heat the better the chances of recovery. Please keep updating.

I'm so glad you are finding hope. I have to agree it takes some time for the meds to take affect. Okay, back from the vet. She held her and I gave the subQ to make sure I could do it. We gave her 5cc's. She sent me home with 35cc's pulled up in syringes so we should be set.

She just licked a few licks of yogurt and ate a tiny piece of a Yogie (I figured any calories are good calories). I'm going to give her (and me) half an hour to rest since she just got the subQ, then I'll try to get a little BML watered down with Pedialyte into her.

I will put her and Peeps in Syd's new fleece Sissy and nap sitting up in a chair, Jen to help keep her warm.

Sundra, you know you can call me anytime you need. I may not have any answers but I'm here for you and am sending out prayers for you, Jeepers, Peepers and of course, Syd too. This has to be hard on her since Jeepers just became "her" glider. Hang in there my friend.

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

I could have missed the pain

Oh Sundra I am sooo very happy to hear you were able to get ahold of Mary and Charlie...Keep up the good work.
Give your babies luvs from us all and your little girl....takes a great little mind to realize that Her happiness can be put on hold for the love of a glider. When you are able to return to normal life and take Syd to Sea World let me know I can get you discount tickets. (gotta love the army)

I hope you are able to keep up on the feedings. Remember we are all here for you. no matter what time of the night it might be.

I'm sorry to report that Jeepers and I lost our fight. A little while ago, right after I gave her her evening dose of Baytril, she finally passed. Syd was sitting with me, and had just coaxed her into taking a little bite of her favorite food, a strawberry yogie. I realized what was happening and handed her to Syd, where she took her last breath.

As hard as we were trying, I could see that she was only getting weaker. We had finally gotten her pretty well hydrated, but she wasn't feeling any better. I kept going back and forth wondering if I was doing the right thing trying to save her, or only being selfish and prolonging her pain. It was actually a relief when she passed, not because of the work involved in keeping her alive, but because it was breaking my heart to keep getting her out of the pouch and prying her mouth open to take the fluids and BML. My only hope was that the C & S would show something promising tomorrow, but I didn't have much hope of that.

This is my first time to lose a glider. When Lucy reported from the death database that over half of gliders die by age 2, I thought that was only because so many people don't know how to care for them. But that wasn't going to happen to us because I'm at GC all the time and I KNOW to keep the toilet lids down and make sure the cage is secure, and what to feed them and I take them to the vet immediately when I suspect a problem. But I guess all that isn't enough.

I'll be interested to see if a necropsy reveals anything. I'm thinking she just got stressed when I was away at the SGGA, and Mike had to take them to my parent's house in Georgetown over the weekend, and then when we got back, we changed her schedule again because Syd started carrying her in the Sissy pouch to bond with her. All of that stress put together may have either set off an infection of some sort, or just caused her to get dehydrated or mess up her digestion.

Thank you all for your support. Peggy, Dancing, Jen, Mary, Charlie, Ellen, you were all so much help. If it weren't for GC, she wouldn't have made it as long as she did.

I am so sorry for your loss. At least you can know you did everything you could do.

Even though we just hung up on the phone, I just want you to know that I really really wish I was closer to you to give you a big hug. Im so sorry for yours and Syds loss of such a wonderful glider. I had the chance to meet both Peepers and Jeepers before and although it hurts reading these kinds of posts in Real Stories, it just seems to hurt worse when you have been able to share time with the gliders themselves, not to mention, knowing that it happened to a dear friend and there is nothing you can do to take the pain away.

Peeper, use my number as often as you want. Im here for you.
