I ran across this video not too long ago that shows why cages with sliding doors on them are unsafe. They can act like a guillotine to your babies. The reason why I am posting this video is because I have seen alot of people either purchasing these cages or asking alot of questions about these cages. If you already purchased a cage like this just please be careful with your babies!

I bought one of these cages to have as a spare quarantine/joey cage. I used it for maybe a week before I gave it to my neighbor for her cockatiel.

The horrible doors are why I got rid of it. I couldn't stand them. Thankfully I never had an accident but I never felt like my gliders were safe in that cage. Even if you use dog leash clips to hold the door in the down position, a glider can push up and squeeze out through the space at the top. You can easily fit your hand in through, so no doubt a glider could, too!

I also spoke to someone that said their glider was able to put a bend in one of the bars to make a big enough space to get out which I find hard to believe and think either the cage got damaged some how or came like that and their glider just figured it out. But if it was able to bend it some how thats pretty scary if its true.

I wouldn't use this for a sugar glider or bird without modifying the doors, I have seen it slam down on my friend's cockatiel's neck before. The bird was fine, but I still wouldn't risk it. Thanks for sharing the video smile

nice video. I can see that you put a lot of thought and effort into it.

That's a great video, and I agree, not the safest of doors.

My one concern would be sharp edges though on the modified door, I would definitely making sure no pointy edges or anything were sticking out where they could jump and catch themselves.

I had a couple of cages like this before. I never had any problems with the doors. When I opened the bigger doors, they would lean out and hold in place. I, however, was always careful knowing the door could fall down. If the door was open, my arm was in there too, so if it did fall, it would have hit my arm before it would ever hit a glider.

The small doors I had zip tied closed. Those are the ones that a glider would be able to escape from. I don't think they could lift the larger door.

Depending on the cage, some of these styles are very lightweight and have thin wire. A glider could push themselves between the bars. I had a white one that a glider very easily could get through even though the spacing was 1/2", I didn't use that one and was able to return it to the store.

These are the cages that are commonly referred to as "economy" cages. They aren't the greatest, and they typically only last a year or two before they begin to rust.

My baby Dayz is a victim of one of these cages. Her tail got smashed by the door. Her prior owner didn't bother taking her to a vet, so she is missing the tip of her tail. I think about an inch or so. Its not a lot, but they aren't all that big to begin with.

Please be careful with these kind of cages..

My cage has the sliders and they have never bothered them at all. I do have some of them hooked closed though so my 2 year old willnot open them and leave them open. That is scary though.
