You asked for it...you got it!! A new diet study is currently underway with Dr. Ellen Dierenfeld, PhD. A diet trial has begun to determine the efficacy of select common current diets used in feeding sugar gliders. This portion of the overall diet study includes the trials of 3 different diets, including HPW Complete™, Pocket Pets™ diet and Glider Kids Reduced Honey Staple. These diets were selected based on the ease of preparation and feeding. Digestion trials will have an adaptation period of approximately 10 days, followed by 5 day intake and excretion data collection. Two other diets will be analyzed on paper only (due to complexity and time constraints) - we'd like your suggestions of which two should be included in this calculated evaluation. To get your suggestion in for the two diets please complete this Diet Poll . To make sure your suggestion counts, it must be posted in the poll. Simultaneously, soluble fiber fermentation ability in sugar gliders, and its potential impact on gut microbiota and health will be evaluated. Sugar glider’s gastrointestinal tract anatomy suggests that they have a large capacity to harbor beneficial microbial populations, and their feeding ecology is heavily dependent on ingestion of plant gums to meet energy needs. This diet study is estimated at a cost of approximately $15,000, which includes habitats, diet ingredients, multiple laboratory analyses of diets, fecals, and labor. The final results are to be published in animal nutrition and/or veterinary journals. Preliminary study results will be presented by Dr. Dierenfeld via a pre-recorded presentation at the 2014 OSGA in Columbus, Ohio. To get answers to the diet questions we all have, we need your help! Please donate to this project via YouCaring - Sugar Glider Diet Study 2014 . Please note that GliderCENTRAL is not responsible nor affiliated with this research study in any way.

Wow!! For YEARS people have been screaming for this and Shelly, you have finally made a way to get it rolling. Good for you!! There is SO VERY MUCH that will be learned by this study and I for one feel it is going to be very interesting. I am excited to see the results of the soluble fiber fermentation ability in sugar gliders, and its potential impact on gut microbiota. This will be SO IMPORTANT to learn and I know it was mentioned in the first study that was done as something that needed to be done. I, for one, applaud both you and Dr.Dierenfeld for getting this ball rolling once again I am in hopes that everyone is willing to give up a special coffee or snack for the day and donate that $5. If that happens this study will have its funds raised in no time.

We still have over $13,000 to raise for this diet study. That's a lot of money, but we can do it! We all know how important these little fuzzies are to us, and we all know how important their diets are to them. This study is going to help is in improving their diets. We NEED to learn more about them and what nutrients they need. Want to continue giving your baby the best you can? Then donate a few dollars to this study so we can do just that. https://www.youcaring.com/sugargliderdietstudy

I have been sitting back and watching Shelly reach out to the community for their support to help raise money for the diet study. I was happy to see that she has 40 supporters to get the ball rolling. After giving this much thought, I have decided that not only as a vendor, but also as a sugar glider owner/ breeder, this is a very well needed thing to be done so we know we are doing all we can and the best we can for our gliders. With that being said, Critter Love would LOVE to see ALL other vendors and breeders stand with me on our way to make this a success for our sugar gliders. Starting tomorrow 1-30-2014 until midnight 4-26-2014 Critter Love will be donating 5% of any and all sales (free samples, shipping and taxes excluded) to the Sugar Glider diet Study. I am in hope that other vendors and breeders stand with me to show just how important the overall heath of our sugar gliders are to us.

Have you ever wondered if what you are feeding your glider is what their system actually needs? I have too! That's why there is a nutritional/ diet study for sugar gliders. The results of this study will help us in improving our captive diets for the overall health of our gliders. This study isn't going to answer all of our diet related questions, but it will provide us more information than we currently know today!

Shelly, I am so pumped about this research! There is so much debate on diets, it would be amazing to get some solid facts out there about some of these very amazing diets! I'll be working on submitting some more donations before this study fundraiser is finished!

For those that haven't had the opportunity to read the latest newsletter from Sun Coast Sugar Gliders (click on link for the full newsletter), below is the portion that I wrote for the latest edition: How would it make you feel to know that—because of you—sugar gliders will live healthier lives due to nutritionally balanced diets?By Shelly Sterk Currently, there is over an estimated 1 million Sugar Gliders kept domestically as pets in the United States. As current trends continue, this number will rapidly multiply. As owners and care givers, it is our responsibility to provide for these marvelous marsupials in the best manner possible. Captive sugar gliders are fed a range of homemade diets to commercially available diets; most fed in conjunction with fresh vegetables and fruits. The question “What is a good diet?” is posed daily by sugar gliders owners. While many diet combinations appear adequate, the truthful answer is that after almost 20 years of sugar gliders kept as pets, we do not know enough about the underlying nutritional physiology of this species. But there is something we can do to find out. We can work together to find out what a sugar glider needs! To determine a sugar gliders’ nutritional needs and how the nutrients are processed in their bodies is paramount in order to provide a nutritionally balanced diet. Let’s take the guess work out of our diets! The current Sugar Glider Nutrition Study is just the beginning steps in learning their nutritional requirements. Then, and only then, will we be able to truly structure diets specifically, and nutritionally complete for our sugar gliders. Don’t you want to know if what you are feeding is truly good for your sugar gliders? Please say “Yes!” to the future of sugar gliders by making a contribution today! To make a contribution, please visit https://www.youcaring.com/sugargliderdietstudy“We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.” - Mother TeresaYou have seen the controversy surrounding how to correctly feed sugar gliders. There isn’t a lot of science behind it. Today, I am asking that you help make a change to begin finding the resolutions to these ongoing debates for the health and well-being of our sugar gliders. How do we begin? We already have! The Sugar Glider Nutrition Study is already under way. This research is being conducted by Dr. Ellen Dierenfeld, PhD. Dr. Dierenfeld is highly esteemed in her field. She is currently a private consultant with over 20 years of experience in comparative animal nutrition - research and applied. Her professional experience includes a multitude of species on 6 different continents, and has over 200 publications accredited to her name. Some of her work history includes: • Cornell University • Wildlife Conservation Society • Smithsonian Institution • University of Florida • University of Missouri • Purdue University • Texas A&M University • Saint Louis Zoo • and more! The Sugar Glider Nutrition Study consists of two studies being conducted simultaneously. One is comparing some basal diets ( diet trial), and the other is the soluble fermentation ability study. A diet trial will determine the nutrients supplied by, efficacy of utilization, and overall balance of select common current diets currently used in feeding sugar gliders in the United States. Subsequent to basal diet investigations, soluble fiber fermentation ability in sugar gliders, and its potential impact on gut microbiota and health, will be evaluated. Sugar glider’s gastrointestinal tract anatomy suggests that they have a large capacity to harbor beneficial microbial populations, and their feeding ecology is heavily dependent on ingestion of plant gums to meet energy needs. The goal of these studies is to better understand the range of nutrients that appear to meet the (as yet unknown) nutritional requirements of this species during their maintenance stage of life. This baseline knowledge provides the foundation for understanding nutrition during other physiologic stages (growth, reproduction, geriatrics). The results of this study will help us in improving our captive diets for the overall health of our sugar gliders. This study isn’t going to answer all of our diet related questions, but it will provide us more information that we currently know today! This diet study is estimated at a cost of approximately $15,000.00. Almost half of the funds will be expended for detailed laboratory analyses, with the remainder supporting the diet ingredients, animal care, data collection, sample preparation, summary and report generation. A preliminary report of the findings to date will be presented via a pre-recorded presentation at the OSGA, Columbus, Ohio on April 26, 2014. ( http://www.sugargliderconvention.com) The final results will later be published in animal nutrition and/or veterinary journals. The entire study is anticipated to take approximately 6 to 8 months. To date, we have raised over $3,300.00 of the $15,000.00 needed. Can we count on you to help? The sugar glider community is known for their love, passion and especially for coming together to get things accomplished. Donate today! We ask you to support this effort at whatever level is most appropriate and affordable for you. https://www.youcaring.com/sugargliderdietstudyWhen courage, genius, and generosity hold hands, all things are possible. -Unknown Please consider making a donation. Every dollar helps.

Bump. Looks like the pace of donations has slowed. Donations are over 60 percent of the goal, so it's within reach. Let's not lose this opportunity! You asked for it...you got it!! I'm VERY happy to announce that the attendees at the OSGA made some purchases and raised quite a bit of money for the diet study! I it when a community comes together for a great cause. Together, we raised $1000.00! In addition to that $1000.00, one of the vendors, Nicole Manning with Tough Cheese, donated a portion of her proceeds. She made a personal contribution on Saturday after vending of $100.00 bringing the entire total to $1,100.00!! Thank you to everyone that has donated so far, still a ways to go though!

Shelly - have you been able to get a transcript of the information shared at the gathering, or to post the information anywhere for those of use that could not attend.
I would love any feed back on the observations so far.
