I don't know if I'm just being a paranoid new mommy or what but my babies came home today, 8 weeks oop, they were out playing for about an hour today around 3:30pm, they have pretty much been sleeping since, it's 11:00 pm, is it normal for younger gliders to be a little more active during the day and sleepier at night? Also could it just be a little stress from coming home etc? Thanks ahead of time, I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right!

I read somewhere else on here that Gliders do nap even at night, I imagine they have had a stressful day and are more tired than usual

We had infrared cameras recording our gliders for several months and you would be amazed at how much they sleep. The typical pattern is that they are up and playing, eating, etc. for about 60 to 90 minutes, and then they take a nap for an hour or so. It continues like that all night. In a 24 hour period gliders sleep much more than they are awake!

Also, 3:30 p.m. probably was a little early for them to be awake and playing, so they need their rest. Our gliders range in age from 2 to 6 years old, and generally we don't hear a peep from them from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Our trio usually doesn't come out until 10:30 or 11:00 p.m. Foehn and Rossby will be up as early as 9:30 pm on many days.

Not to sideline this topic, but how much information did you learn about your gliders from using infared cams, and would you recommend this to other members? I already thought of using night vision cameras to gain more information about their behavior in captivity but this seems the better option.

You are doing just fine.

Give your new babies a few days to adjust to their new home. Having just arrived in a totally new world - new sights, sounds, smells, people, cage and the absence of their parents will totally throw your babies' normal sleep habits off until they adjust to everything.

Depending on how they traveled to your home, they may also have been in a darker environment during the daytime which can also throw off their cues on when to sleep and when to be awake.

Gliders need light during normal daylight hours and dark after sunset to help set their internal clock. If your babies were in a dark area while traveling or if the lights were still on in the room in the evening, their wake up time will be affected. Playing in the afternoon, especially after traveling and being disturbed from their sleep is perfectly normal.

Give them some time to adjust and be sure to darken the room in the evenings to encourage them to come out to eat an play. My gliders will not come out of their pouches if there is a lamp on in their room.

I have one of those security systems with a DVR and four cameras my wife got me for Christmas after we got the gliders. These are regular color cameras with infrared capability. I think most night vision cameras use infrared. We got this about 4 years ago so there is probably some better equipment available now, and possibly cheaper.

There are baby monitor cameras that have infrared capabilities and with the right software can be linked to your I-pad or I-phone to watch your gliders. You can get them at Target, Walmart or even toys-R-US.

My son has them for his kids and can watch and listen to them when they are in bed from anywhere in the house including the basement 2 floors down.

Thanks everyone! The little sleepy heads finally got up around 4am, I think their schedule is just off a little bit but we will get them on track. We keep our room dark at night to begin with, I'm prone to migraines and bright lights can trigger it. They were eating and drinking so they are doing very well, they are so sweet and curious! I'm so happy my babies are home, getting everything ready to do tent time tomorrow
