Hi! We just brought our first joey home last week. She (Stitch) is currently about 10 weeks oop. Her cage came with wooden dowel rod type perches. I left them in the cage thinking she might like to climb on them. The other day I noticed her chewing on one of them and she ripped some off. I've read that they love to chew wood and since the dowels were intended for birds they are likely not toxic for her. However I am concerned about it being a choking hazard or if I should worry about splinters in her mouth or anything. This is totally like being a new mom again!

So, am I worrying over nothing? She really seemed to enjoy tearing it up but I don't want her to get hurt.

Thanks,
Malissa

Hi! Welcome to GliderCENTRAL and glider parenthood! wave

I don't have personal experience with chewers, but you can try giving her some plastic army men to chew or a high quality pellet food for chewing.

She may be chewing out of boredom, do you have many toys for her to play with? If you need toy ideas, just click the word toys. grin

Again, Welcome! :welcome:

wave Welcome to GC!

I'm sure that they're fine, but you'll probably find that they get kind of stinky after a few weeks. Many people put fresh apply branches in their cages for their gliders to chew on. You can also use eucalyptus branches but you have to make sure it's a glider safe type. You can find some by clicking HERE .

Or, as mentioned above, little plastic army men, bracelets, etc, also give them something to chew on.

Thank you for your responses. I feel better. I'm in the process of making some more toys. So I hope that will help. She hasn't been with us quite a week yet so I suppose it could just be anxiety of a new environment.
