A Joey is not considered OOP until it has detached from the nipple and the mother is able to move way from the joey. If its head is still in the pouch nursing it may not be officially OOP.
Moms will take the joeys out of her pouch for grooming for a couple weeks before they are ready to detach from the nipple. Do not try to handle the joey until you are positive it has detached. If a joey is removed from the nipple too soon its jaw may not be fully developed enough to allow it to re-attach and continue nursing until it is weaned.
