So, as I have stated before we took in two female sugar gliders as re-homes a little over a month ago now. This past weekend we were doing play time in the bathroom with them one night and Sug, who is naturally more outgoing, became what we though was very aggressive toward the other girl, Doll. As a reminder they are both 2 1/2 - 3 years old, from what we were told.

Well, after doing some quick google searches it seems that one or both of the girls may have been in heat and Sug tried to be the "alpha" by getting on top of Doll and gripping to her and biting her neck and thrusting in to Doll as well.

Is my research correct, was this just one or both of them being in heat and the alpha just showing she is just that the alpha of their community?

We were worried and weren't sure if we maybe didn't have 2 females like we were told, or if we should separate them for fear of Sug hurting Doll. But our reading lead us to believe it would be safe to keep them together and we did and everything seems fine. After a day or so things seem to be back to normal.

Just posting as we are still learning and want to do our best for them.

Thanks,
Phil

Although I have not experienced seeing this behavior, I've read that it can happen. Since the behavior didn't last more than a day or two and your Doll was not injured, I would agree it's safe to keep them together, however keeping an eye on them, checking regularly for any injuries and listening for farther disturbances.

I have seen this first hand and it is a show of dominance. Just watch the less dominant of the two for wounds up on the neck and shoulder area.

Mine have never made wounds on one another, but I have had males leave wounds on the girls before.

Thanks Kimberley, hopefully it doesn't occur to often, but we will be on the lookout for it again. I haven't seen any wounds on the less dominant girl, Doll Face, and I just clipped her nails today.
