My boyfriend and I adopted intact twin boys this Friday. They were on a crappy diet in a small cage. Saturday went fine.

Sunday night we heard crabbing from the bedroom, went in and the dominate male was humping the submissive one. The submissive one wasn't fighting so we let them go. 10 minutes in we decided to break them up. The submissive male got a very small skin break on his neck. The dominate one wouldnt leave him alone so we split them into separate cages for the night. The submissive in the new cage, dominate in the old.

The next morning they frantically tried to get together so we put them together in the bigger new cage and they cuddles right up and fell asleep.

Thinking the issue had been food related (they are both starved for good food) we provided two feeding plates last night and figured that would fix it.

Last night we heard them going again, found them again by the same food bowl. This time we used a small squirt bottle through the cage so we weren't physically pulling the dominate male off of him. We monitored for 20 minutes but the dominate actively followed the submissive male and if he ever caught up hed start humping again. The submissive still never did anything but crab. We left the dominate in the big cage this time and put the submissive in the old cage.

We are working on getting the dominate one neutered but are we doing the right thing separating them? Someone one a different forum said to let them work it out but with the first mark already healing well I dont want it to reopen.

I know this is probably is stemming from relocation stress plus being nutrient starved but I am at a loss as to what to do.

Welcome to the forum and to glider parenthood.

Are you positive they are both male? How old are they?

Do they both have bald spots on their heads and a yellow area which is another scent gland on their chests - along with an obvious scrotal sack in the middle of their bellies?

What you are describing sounds like normal mating behavior including the small injury on the shoulder of the submissive glider.

If they are both intact males - it would be best to have BOTH neutered. If you have only one neutered it is possible that they would just reverse dominance roles with the intact one becoming more likely to try mating with the neutered male as his hormone levels drop.

If you are going to separate them it would probably be easier on the gliders if you just keep them separated and even move the cages to separate rooms until you can have them neutered. If one is actually a female - then she is probably in heat and things will settle down after a day or two - but would most likely happen again in a month when she is again in heat.

Having them both neutered will cut down on some of the dominance issues, they will still need to assert themselves occasionally.

It will also cut down on the smell.

Candy has given you some good information.
