I have been considering making a new cage for our gliders. I saw some plans for pvc cages and thought it was a great idea until I started reading conflicting reports. Some say pvc is safe, some say it is toxic for gliders.

Even though they have a relatively nice cage now, I would really like to make an even larger one, but am concerned with using pvc to do it. What is the general consensus here regarding the use of pvc for glider cages?

- cheers

I have one PVC cage and they are nice but they hold smell. I have never heard of a PVC cage being poisonous but I will look into it for my self. I have had one for three years now with out incidence but I am looking into replacing it do to slight stink.

I would like to hear from those who have pvc cages, cleaning their pros and cons too. I have been considering one as an alternate cage.

Me too. It seems like an inexpensive (compared to metal cages) way to build a cage. I really like the fact that it would be easily moved so that it could be taken outside and hosed off for a good cleaning.

I was disappointed to find out that they tend to hold smell in. The cage I currently have is a metal cage (3' wide x 4' high by 2' deep) with a screen mesh wrapped around it (it was designed to be a ferret cage so the gliders can squeeze out between the bars). I find the mesh itself tends to hold smell and want to replace it with hardware cloth, but wanted to look into building a new cage if I was going to put in the work of replacing the screen on the current cage.

The PVC that is toxic is a coated wire. I can't remember off hand which manufacturer has it, but it is still out there.

I have some PVC coated wire cages that were not made using that manufacturers wire, but I am slowly replacing them with the powder coated cages.

The powder coating is a hard finish and it doesn't hold the smell in.
