i have two gliders, and male and a female. about 12 weeks OOP, and i've had them for about a month now. one of them (can't figure out which one) barks in the middle of the night. not sure why...thought they were scared by passing traffic on the road (maybe could hear cars go by?), so i moved the cage to a quieter area. no reason to bark...hmmmm... any theories out there??

Gliders bark.

some nights they don't bark, some nights they do bark.

We were in the playroom 3 nights ago, all was well with gliders running and jumping and just playing, when sophie started barking. The other 5 just stopped, and froze in place. for 5 minutes barking and frozen gliders, then she stopped and the havoc started up again.

They bark for attention, they are training you to come when called.

If you give them treats every time they bark and you go to them you are reinforcing the behavior.

Plus it gives them an ego trip to know that they have you trained to come when called. :roflmao2:

My girls will wake me up barking every couple weeks or so. It's not a very common occurrence for them. I was dog sitting for my parents once & the first time they saw her one of the girls started barking. Other than the strange dog in their house I've never seen why they were barking. I try to just leave them alone unless I see something is bothering them.

We have had our gliders 18 months now. At first, their barking would bring us up right out of bed. When our schedule had us getting up at 4:30 am with an alarm, and the girls thought we weren't getting up, they would bark. This carried on over the weekend too. We would get up just to spend time with them and keep their schedule.

Now they bark whenever and in the middle of the night, we have learned to sleep through it if all seems well. There are "tones" to their bark if they are startled, or just want attention. Some barks are them "Telling a story" to everyone. That's why the others sit and listen. We find it's comforting to us, and feel that it's one of the sweetest noises right behind their squeaking noise while eating a treat. mlove

Now when they don't bark for a few days, I am concerned.

Mine bark on occasions. Prior to my divorce I always checked on them, and tried to quiet them. After my divorce, when I didn't have to worry about anyone else being distured and realizing nothing was amiss I began to not worry about it. Sometimes, if it persists or seems different than the norm, I'll check, but mostly I'll ignore them or talk soothingly to them. I eventually fall back to sleep and they eventually stop, and that's if it even wakes me up.

On rare occasions, I'll hear lighter and higher pitched barking coming from their pouch, sometimes I'll reach in and give the pouch a little rub, or just quietly sooth them verbally.
