My gliders live in a powder coated cage and the litter tray is starting to rust and the paint is chipping off. It's getting really bad now and I'm afraid the gliders might eat some of the paint or get hurt, they can reach the tray by getting their arms through the bars.

The rest of the cage is holding up fine so I was wondering if I could paint or cover it somehow. If so, what paint could I use? Should I have to remove the powder coating so I can paint over the metal?

You will have to sand the pan down to clean metal where it is rust and a little larger than the area that is rusted.

You can use low VOC Rustoleum to paint it, just keep it outside until it is dry and doesn't smell anymore.
