Hey everyone, I'm so glad I found this forum! It seems like theres hardly any in depth information about sugar gliders on the internet. I've done a ton of research on gliders and I'm always reading more so they can have the best cage life as possible.

I was just given 4 sugar gliders (all females) about 3wks ago: Flower, Roo, Willow and Cheyenne. I am told they are all around 2-3 years old. Flower seems to be the leader of the colony as she is the biggest and is always out to eat first and the first one back in the pouch(then she'll come back out later on during the night). She has the most outgoing personality out of the 4 in my opinion; rarely- if ever crabs at me, and isn't shy

But here's the thing: when she goes back into the pouch one of them (usually Roo) will go near/inside the pouch and see whats shes up to in there and Flower makes an alarming sound, kind of like a zzt-zzt sound or like a hissing/sneezing sound.. they all seem to get along great any other time besides when Flower goes back into the pouch when she's done eating. Any ideas what this sound means?

Check out glider sounds on youtube, it should help you identify what the sound she's making is generally called. Their alarm sound is normally crabbing and very distinct, but they also make a sneeze-like sound that can indicate anything from just mildly annoyed to she's cleaning herself.

I generally translate that sound as a "get your foot out of my eye" or "no, you get your eye off my foot" type of communication.

Hi and welcome to Glider Central! wave

Congratulations on the new colony!!!

I agree with Hutch, it could be a few things. Maybe she's grooming or wants an undisturbed nap.

With 4 gliders, you may want to have more than one sleeping pouch. That way if one decides to sleep alone they can. Or at least offer a couple of corner hammocks or open environment(OE)pouch. My Stewie uses his like a recliner and grooms and chills out. But he's my character. Lol!

The coolest thing about gliders is the more you observe their behavior, the more you'll learn about your colony.

Here is a link to a couple of pics of an OE pouch, and yes that's Stewie:

Ladymagyver,

Thanks for the reply! I have 3 options for pouches in their cage, but they all choose to sleep together. And I think you may be right, she might just want to groom herself in private
