No, I cannot say it is difficult to import. However, one must be USDA licensed as well as have a license with the dept of Wildlife and Game dept. Then be willing to give time to go to an airport that has a Fish and Wildlife Inspector in order for the animal to go through customs. Only a few airports have them. So...person shipping or receiving here in the states ....unless they live close to a major port so to speak...must travel and have hotel accomodations which is usually reflected in the cost of the animal.

Good example of cost...I purchased a possible leucestic het from Canada. Had to go to Dallas from KC. Animal which normally would have cost close to $650 with shipping ...coming from Canada...the animal was $850. Otherwords...I paid for the other person's travel expenses. The $850 did not include my own expenses for travel and were additional.

So, in the end...it is a matter of how much the receiver is willing to pay and also what the shipee is willing to do in order to get a prized animal through a port with customs.

I would go by what Judie said, the only thing I have to offer you is that I was going to bring some gliders to Costa Rica and they had no problem as long as they had a health certificate from a vet. so maybe if you come to the US you can take one back more easily with you, check with customs. chris

I live in New York and I am getting my gliders from Canada. I will be driving them across the border. I have gone to visit my gliders at the breeders a couple of times and each time I have gone through customs I have asked them the procedure to bring the gliders across the border, and all you need is a health certificate from a vet stating that they are healthy and are not bringing any disease into the country. I also was told that there will be no duty to pay either.
Hope that helps you.

ok, here is the whole story after 5 days of phone calls hearing "a sugar glider, what's that, i'll transfer you, try this number, etc.
My vet didn't know, customs couldn't even find gliders the data base. I tried to explain these crabby sweet creatures All i want to know was, can i pick up a glider from usa and bring it home to canada? I was starting to think not, one phone op. even asked if they were legal in canada, i thought they were (yes) and it meant he knew nothing, strike , transfer me please and/or give me another useless number.
Now i did get help from all of your posts, the hero of the long days explain how i could pick up a glider 1-2 hour drive from my home, canada
First make sure you are getting a healthy USDA glider, usa born. Proof on receipt.
States entrys will want you to prove you care and know this pet. You will be ask for reason for buying this animal, i am not sure if you can breed, show, etc as i only enquired as a pet for household
Have the breeder's vet state glider is healthy. Proof in writing.
Pay taxes of purchase.
And i think that i will try, maybe thinking of more?

[:"#CC6699"]I believe all you need is a health certificate to get the glider over the boarder?? Atleast that is how it works bringing a canadian glider in the US right? What you said sounds so complicated, I hope that I am right! [/]

ok sorry maybe that sounded like alot, all you need is a reciept stating price and that glider's breeder is USDA aprroved. You will be asked about glider as they care about animals. Very easy.

There is someone on this board that went though that exact same thing. They had gliders shipped from SunCoast but I don't think they had them shipped all the way to Canada just to NY and drove down there, picked them up at the airport and drove back over the border. I believe they HAD to pay duties on the gliders. Maybe you should get a hold of her, her GC name is possum .

It is much easier taking gliders into Canada. Bringing from Canada to US is where a USDA and Fish and Game license is needed. And yes, a duty tax is paid...coming and going along with health certificate and proof of sale.

Only when shipping directly in to Canada from the U.S or into the U.S. from Canada is a Fish & Wildlife license required I believe. The breeder does not need one if the glider is acquired locally over the board or shipped to an airport north of the boarder and drove across into Canada.

No licensing is required coming from Canada and is driven over the borderds into the US? Hmmm. Not so sure about that one.

From what I know, NO special licensing is needed when driving the glider, only when flying. You only need bill of sale( should contain name of breeder, address & phone # ) & a health certificate. Some of the border patrols don't even ask to see but it is good to have all ready for check.
I've sold two gliders to U.S. customers and have driven over to border myself to deliver. I was only asked to show proof of where the glider was going & health certificate once. The other time just asked to see the glider no certificate or anything and let me drive on though. It just all depends on who you get at the crossing.

I specifically asked BOTH times I went to visit and was coming back over to the states. 2 different customs officers told me that all I would need is a health cert. from a vet and there would be no tax to pay.
They better be right cause I'm bringing them home this week!!
I'll let y'all know what happens.

Erin (Vettech05) from the above post is getting her gliders from me. I have quite often sold joeys to NY state residents, probably because im still the closest breeder for Western NY. My vet does do a check up on all my joeys prior to them leaving and presents me with a health certificate for each to pass along to their new owners. This along with a receipt from myself is enough for them to cross over the Ontario/NY state border. It is recommended that they be transported over during regular bussiness hours to guarantee there is a fish & wildlife official on hand in case there be any concern (of which none of my customers have had a problem yet). As Candice said, sending by air over the border does call for different permits and procedures and licenses.
Oh and Snitch, there are a few of us breeders in and around the Toronto area .
